As Salaamu Alaikum, Since the last e-mail was sent Laila has spoken to Imam Mohammed. His suggestion is that we all support local and town efforts, and send money to your favorite charity. If we choose to send money to The Mosque Cares it will be sent to its favorite charity, and Imam Mohammed will be supporting local efforts.
Laila and I are focusing on organizing the joint efforts of Ash Shamsiyyah/The Umbrella, and Islamic Cure Foundation, to take a trip on October 7, to take supplies to the area in, and around New Medinah, Hattiesburg, Biloxi, and Gulfport Mississippi. We have begun to collect clothes, and essential items already. We'd also like to ask the believers, and the Dawah teams in the Southern States to meet us in New Medinah that weekend to help the believers meet some of the needs they have for repairs, cleanup etc. We will go to Bioxi, Gulfport, and some smaller cities in the area that weekend. Whatever we are not able to do we will report back to the believers, so someone with the resources can meet the needs. Insha Allah.

As Salaamu Alaikum.

I was finally able to speak with Sister Rosa Shareef from New Medinah Mississipi. She in turn gave me the number for Sister Sakinah Qawiy in Gulfport Mississippi. After speaking with the both of them I have this information to pass along to you all:

As a result of Hurricane Katrina, many of the people lost their jobs. So they are desperately in need of money. With money they can meet their basic needs.

The believers in New Medinah sustained some structural damage and need some supplies and labor to help make the repairs to some of their homes. The ceiling has fallen in one particular home, exposing it to the pending rains. As of today they are still without electricity. They have 4 generators, need more, but also need the money for fuel to power the ones they have. They have water but need to boil it. The community has brought them bottled water also. Because they don't have electricity the food is beginning to spoil. They have pooled all the food together and brought it to the Masjid freezer. Each family takes a turn cooking, and they are sharing all meals together. Al Hamdu Lillah. Because of the lack of electricity they have been forced to throw a lot of food away. The Red Cross had been coming by with MRE"S. The desire is to be self sustaining so they don't have to accept meals with pork in them. New Medinah needs food, dry goods, canned goods, toiletries, sanitizers, paper towels, tissue, etc.

The Believers in New Medinah will act as a Drop Off/Distribution Center once they have electricity restored.

Gulfport and Biloxi Mississippi have been hit pretty hard. Biloxi Islamic Center sustained damage to the extent that they are holding a Shurah meeting on the Third Sunday to determine whether they should try to repair or rebuild the facility. If you would like to help in the effort to build or repair please contact Brother Sabree Rashid ~ Chairperson of the Shura Board @ (228) 497-9795.

Imam Abdul Raheem Hassan lost everything. And needs our support because he is not able to work right now because he is caring for his wife and about 8 or 9 children, many of them need clothes, shoes, etc., But mainly money. Please be very charitable with him and his family.

The believers in Biloxi and Gulfport need cash, because many of them lost their jobs, and sustained a lot of damage to their homes. They have heard from their insurance companies and have been told they can't do repairs on their homes until the adjusters see the property, and the adjusters won't be around for weeks. We have an idea that perhaps we could just make sure they get enough money for boarding material that can be used to secure windows, doors, and holes in roofs and such until the adjusters can come. Again they need money for that.

It has been suggested that no one send anything via US Mail because the routing center for mail was New Orleans. It has been hard for people to get their mail in a reasonable amount of time if at all.

I am listing the banking information for both New Medinah and The Biloxi Islamic Center. You can send money directly via bank to bank. This will allow the believers to get exactly what they need.
