UN, Norway Funds to Promote Muslim Consensus

The United Nations is funding an SLMC-NUA (Sri Lanka Muslim Congress-National Unity Alliance) effort to evolve a common position for the Muslims in the peace process. The Island learns that the UN Development Programme is releasing US$40,000 directly to the Peace Secretariat for Muslims (PSM), established last December under an agreement between SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem and NUA leader Ferial Ashraff.

 

The UNDP is also releasing US$ 50,000 in support of peace-related projects. This would be done in consultation with the PSM tasked with facilitating a dialogue among Muslim political parties and interested groups.

 

The PSM received funds from Academics for Education Development under an USAID initiative. An authoritative official said that the PSM was engaged in promoting a consensus among Muslim groups.

 

Norway has granted Rs 24 million. "We consider the PSM a positive and constructive initiative for creating a common Muslim platform for promoting Muslim interests in the ongoing peace process in Sri Lanka and we are happy to support it," Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brattskar said on Monday.
