*U.N. Commission To Probe Gaza Bombing* 2/10/2009 5:37 AM ET
(RTTNews) - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the world body will form a commission to probe Israel's bombing of U.N. facilities in Gaza, the council's president said. He made the announcement Monday at a closed-door meeting of the Security Council, when he briefed the council members about his recent visit to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This was stated by Japan's envoy to the U.N. Yukio Takasu, who currently holds the presidency of the Security. Ban said he will inform the panel in the next few days and a report will be presented to the Council on the panel's findings, added Takasu, briefing mediapersons. Diplomats doubt whether Israel's main ally, the U.S., which has a veto in the council, will allow the 15-nation body to adopt the report as its own. Several envoys said that the former British secretary-general of human rights group Amnesty International, Ian Martin, would lead the commission.
