Re: [IslamCity] Muslim women step into whole new aquatic world

2005-04-25 Thread F. Saad

Assalamu alaikum,

I never said that the awrah of a woman is from the naval to the knee.
I said that the awrah of a woman infront of other women is from the awrah to the knee, but it is not the acceptable way of dressing. This awrah is such because of the excuse of breastfeeding that could be a hardship for a woman.
I supported the view with a hadith, in which the sheikh mentions the misconceptions that people make from this hadith.
The hadith below clearly states that the awrah of women infront of each other is from the naval to the knee. He did not say it is sufficient for her to cover from naval to the knee. He meant that a woman is not allowed to look at the awrah of another woman which is from the naval to the knee.
As for the awrah of a woman in public, then I am of the opnion that all the woman is awrah including her face, hands and feet.
This is because the hadith, "The woman is awrah" did not exclude anything from that definition.

I cover from head to toe. Infront of other women, I wear modest clothes. But with breastfeeding [in a woman's gathering], I know women who try very hard to cover up, but many many times, as with all women I know the child themselves pull at the garments, and so forth.
Whatever is seen thereof is not haram, since there is a clear concession on that.

With regards to the doubts that some women have, concerning the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “Let no woman look at the ‘awrah of another woman and let no man look at the ‘awrah of another man; the ‘awrah of a woman in front of another woman is from the navel to the knee”, which they interpret as indicating that women may wear short clothes – the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not say that it is sufficient for women’s clothing to cover the area from the navel to the knee, so this cannot be used as evidence. What he did say was
that no woman should look at the ‘awrah of another woman, so he forbade them to look, because the ‘awrah of the woman who is wearing loose clothing may sometimes be exposed when answering the call of nature or for some other reason, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade women to look at one another’s ‘awrahs.__Do You Yahoo!?Tired of spam? It is the awrah of men not of women. I don't know from where Sister
Fatima got this information which is totally wrong and misleading. The
awrah of a woman is from head to toe except face and hand from wrist.
For Breast feeding,a woman has to cover herself properly and not
feeding in public. She should have given the source from where
she got this information

Re: Re: [IslamCity] Muslim women step into whole new aquatic world

2005-04-21 Thread F. Saad

Assalamu alaikum,

Brother, I appreciate the question, but one reminder. I am a Muslim and the greeting of the Muslim is Assalamu alaikum, not Hello.
If I upset you over something, then I apologize, but kindly use the Islamic greeting when addressing me.

As for your question, YES, I AM SURE of what I said about the AWRAH OF WOMEN IS FROM NAVAL TO THE KNEE. I will support this with proof. Now, the known fact is that a woman'sappropriate dress infront of other women is her whole body except her head, hands and feet.
But if a woman sees the calf of a woman (below the knee), then that is not considered Haram because it is still within the boundary of what is permissible. And if a woman is breastfeeding in the presence of other women, then she is not doing something haram because the breast in this case does not fall into the haram category. But it is not permissible for women to appear topless, or in two piece bathing suits infront of each other. That is contrary to the modesty that a Muslim woman should have. The fact that what is above the naval was made permissible was due to need for women to breastfeed

Here are various fatwas I found on the subject from http://www.islam-qa.com

http://63.175.194.25/index.php?ln=engds=qalv=browseQR=23329dgn=4

http://63.175.194.25/index.php?ln=engds=qalv=browseQR=43480dgn=4

http://63.175.194.25/index.php?ln=engds=qalv=browseQR=34745dgn=4

This fatwa covers the topic I was talking about, and I will cut and paste that paragraph as well as the whole question:

http://63.175.194.25/index.php?ln=engds=qalv=browseQR=12371dgn=4

With regards to the doubts that some women have, concerning the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), “Let no woman look at the ‘awrah of another woman and let no man look at the ‘awrah of another man; the ‘awrah of a woman in front of another woman is from the navel to the knee”, which they interpret as indicating that women may wear short clothes – the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not say that it is sufficient for women’s clothing to cover the area from the navel to the knee, so this cannot be used as evidence. So brother, I hope this has clarified the matter for you better.

Assalamu alaikum

Faces framed with light-colored scarves peer through
the glass panes. The door is locked, as the YWCA is closed
Sundays, but Zainab Al-Baaj comes running to pop it open for the women and
young girls waiting outside. They giggle, saying hello to one
another and switching between speaking Arabic and English as quickly as
they walk through the lobby. The lobby is where this group of
Muslim women, ranging from toddlers to age 60, transitions from the world
outside the YWCA to the world offered to them on the second floor – at the
swimming pool. In the lobby, long colored scarves, or hijab, are
draped over their heads and their bodies are covered with loose, unfitted
clothing. Their Islamic faith and culture instructs them to be modest in
their dress, showing as little skin as possible when in public or in the
presence of men. At the pool, away from windows, cameras a nd men,
they can strip off their layers of clothing, put on colorful swimsuits and
enjoy the warm pool water free of cost for two hours. They talk about
their lives, families and the challenges they face everyday. “Once
I enter the YWCA door, it’s my time,” said Al-Baaj, a native of Iraq.
“It’s not my husband’s time or my children’s time. It’s my time. That’s
why we can’t wait until it’s Sunday…we just can’t wait.” When
Al-Baaj first organized swimming sessions last September with the
assistance of the YWCA staff and the funding of a community endowment, she
had never gone swimming before. Then, on her first Sunday, she was
so excited to get into the water that she kicked off her shoes, rolled up
her pants and ran into the pool, screaming with excitement. In
those early weeks she was too scared to leave the security of the shallow
end and the safety of holding the wall. But now, the young mother of three
is able to take an elegant dive into the deep e nd and swim the length of
the YWCA pool. “Those first few weeks, I was really afraid of the
water,” she said. “But the instructor was right there beside me.”
Now, eight months later, the program still is one of the only of
its kind in the country, although Al-Baaj said she has talked with women
in Tennessee and Michigan who are interested in starting up their own
lessons. The scarcity of pools friendly to Muslim women is the
main reason Ohood Hakim attends the swim sessions. Hakim, a
nutrition and health sciences graduate student at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, said she hadn’t been swimming since she moved from Saudi
Arabia, where there are many private swim clubs, seven years ago. Since
the UNL Campus Recreation Center doesn’t offer accommodations for Muslim
women, Hakim said she has to search for places to exercise on her own.
“We don’t really have a place that understands our religion and
culture,” she said. Hakim works out at Curves, a female-only gym
in Lincoln, and on Sundays between 1 and 3 p.m. she swims and does water
aerobics with 40 to 60 other Muslim women at YWCA. In May, Hakim
will be returning to Saudi Arabia with her husband of seven years and her
two sons, as her education will be completed and her visa will be up. She
will miss the swimming group, which helped her conquer her fear of water –
common among Muslim women because of inexperience with swimming – and gave
her a new sense of confidence. “I understand myself more,” she
said. “I can do things I never thought I could learn to do.” Hakim
said she would also miss the diverse group of women she met. Although the
women all speak Arabic languages, the group is a hodgepodge of different
cultures. Some wear swimsuits while others feel more comfortable in long
shorts and a T-shirt. The women speak seven dialects of Arabic,
and many don’t know English. Most attend worship services at one
of Lincol n’s two mosques every Saturday, but don’t always agree on
matters of faith. The women come from 12 different countries,
  including Morocco, Jordan, Palestine,
