This says that the data size is, indeed, 585,224 bytes. Yet, the total memory
allocated to the batch is 1,073,819,648 (1 GB). The line above also gives the
"density" as 1 (%). The actual density seems to be 0.05%.
This is why getting memory allocation in the external sort to work well is so
hard: other parts of Drill do completely silly things with memory. Parquet also
creates "low-density" batches which require the sort to buffer huge amounts of
empty space.
We certainly should file a bug against the Flatten operator requesting that it
make better use of memory. But, at present, the sort operator must work with
whatever junk comes its way.
Back to this case, the sort then proceeds to explain the issue:

Yes indeed, if we have 1 GB batches coming into the sort, but have only 1/4 GB
to do the sort, then things will not turn out well. This particular sort needs
at least 2 GB (maybe around 2.5 GB) to make progress. It will then spill every
two incoming batchs, reducing the data size by 2000x, and then merge the
resulting ridiculously small spill files.

I re-ran this case with the fix for DRILL-5443. I am getting the same error as
before. I have some questions after looking at the numbers more closely.
This query does a flatten on a large table. The result is 160M records. Half
the records have a one-byte string, and half have a 253-byte string. And then
there are 40K records with 223 byte strings.

The data file for this test is 20 GB in size; a bit to big to test locally.
However, an inspection of the data shows that it contains repeated columns, and
so is subject to the bug described in DRILL-5443. Please retest this case with
the branch that has the fix for DRILL-5443.

The memory is not being constricted for this test. E.g.
`planner.memory.max_query_memory_per_node` is not being set.
