Sorry for chiming in late.
I was wondering whether we actually need accumulators here, or what we
should add is access to the metrics. Because the use case seems to be
"monitoring", not "side aggregates".
Admittedly, the accumulators were the means of choice for metrics up to
now, but for the future (now that we are adding proper metrics), we may want to
fix this.

I think metrics and accumulators are going to co-exist. Metrics are
low-overhead and optional, wheres accumulators could contain some relevant data.
The base components of the Metrics have been merged. The RuntimeContext now has
a method for adding a metrics group.

How about tagging the new method with `@PublicEvolving`. Since its a new
API anyways, its good not to make it part of the stable interfaces.
With Flink 2.0, we can remove the `Evolving` part ;)

There might be one, I don't know too much about it, unfortunately. Maybe
[~Zentol] or [~rmetzger] could help us with that.
About whether it will replace the accumulators, I'm not sure. For me the
accumulators always seemed the right tool for monitoring so maybe they will be
replaced by something better and then be deprecated at some point.
[~StephanEwen] and I recently had a short discussion about that, maybe he'd
also like to chime in on this.

buffered events, but in more advanced triggers there are certainly other points
of interest.
Is there a design document for these metrics? As far as I understand it,

Yes, I think it should work but we would need to add another method that does
both {{addAccumulator()}} and {{getAccumulator()}} in one function. Right now,
you have to do {{addAccumulator()}} one time and then in the future use
{{getAccumulator()}}. In the {{Trigger}} we would not know when to call
{{addAccumulator()}}. This new method could be called
{{getOrAddAccumulator()}}, or just {{getAccumulator(String name, Accumulator
defaultAccumulator)}}. (I prefer the second name.)
