If master's processing its failover and ServerShutdownHandler's processing
happen concurrently, it may appear following case.
 1.master completed splitLogAfterStartup()
2.RegionserverA restarts, and ServerShutdownHandler is processing.
3.master starts to rebuildUserRegions, and RegionserverA is considered as
 dead server.
4.master starts to assign regions of RegionserverA because it is a dead
 server by step3.
However, when doing step4(assigning region), ServerShutdownHandler may be
doing split log, Therefore, it may cause data loss.

I think v12 has consider the above cases, could you help to test this patch in
your cluster ?

I have tried to write an unit test case, but the simulated kill would delete
EphemeralNode on zk when Regionserver Thread exit, so the above case is hard to
appear through unit test case.

HBASE-4893 is related to this issue. In that issue, we know, if multi-threads
share a same connection, once this connection got abort in one thread, the
 other threads will got a
 HConnectionManager$HConnectionImplementation@18fb1f7 closed exception.
It solve the problem of stale connection can't removed. But the orignal
HTable instance cann't be continue to use. The connection in HTable should be
 recreated.
Actually, there's two aproach to solve this:
 1. In user code, once catch an IOE, close connection and re-create HTable
instance. We can use this as a workaround.
 2. In HBase Client side, catch this exception, and re-create connection.

HBASE-3584 does not not provide fully atomic operation in case of region
 server failures (see explanation there).
What should happen is that either (1) all edits are applied via a single
WALEdit, or (2) the WALEdits are applied in async mode and then sync'ed
 together.
For #1 it is not clear whether it is advisable to manage multiple *different*
operations (Put/Delete) via a single WAL edit. A quick check reveals that WAL
replay on region startup would work, but that replication would need to be
adapted. The refactoring needed would be non-trivial.
#2 Might actually not work, as another operation could request sync'ing a
later edit and hence flush these entries out as well.
 Addendum:
The attached patch implements #1 and fixes replication to be able to deal
with different operations being grouped in one WALEdit.

Currently, TableInputFormat initializes a serialized Scan from
hbase.mapreduce.scan. Alternatively, it will instantiate a new Scan using
properties defined in hbase.mapreduce.scan.*. However, of these properties
the start row and stop row (arguably the most pertinent) are missing.
TableInputFormat should permit the specification of a start/stop row as with
the other fields using a new pair of properties:
 hbase.mapreduce.scan.row.start and hbase.mapreduce.scan.row.end
The primary use-case for this is to permit Oozie and other job management
tools that can't call TableMapReduceUtil.initTableMapperJob() to operate on a
 contiguous subset of rows.

There are lots of repeat codes in ThriftServer and HRegionThriftServer.
These codes are now moved to a Runnable called ThriftServerRunner.

taking down the entire cluster to merge 2 regions is a pain, i dont see why
the table or regions specifically couldnt be taken offline, then merged then
 brought back up.
this might need a new API to the regionservers so they can take direction
 from not just the master.

BookKeeper, a contrib of the ZooKeeper project, is a fault tolerant and high
throughput write-ahead logging service. This issue provides an implementation
of write-ahead logging for hbase using BookKeeper. Apart from expected
throughput improvements, BookKeeper also has stronger durability guarantees
compared to the implementation currently used by hbase.

If master's processing its failover and ServerShutdownHandler's processing
happen concurrently, it may appear following case.
 1.master completed splitLogAfterStartup()

Thanks Andrew for this patch.

For others who might run into this: running a jstack on our REST server
revealed that virtually every thread was hung waiting on a table descriptor:

So if your REST server is running slowly on an affected version, I guess try
running a jstack and see if you see this behavior.

The 'transform' feature, where REST can be instructed, via a table attribute,
to apply a transformation (e.g. base64 encoding or decoding) to a (sub)set of
column values before serving them up to a client or storing them into HBase,
was added some time ago at the request of Jack Levin. I have since come to
regret it, it was not a well thought out feature:
   - This is really an application concern.
   - It adds significant overhead to request processing: Periodically a
HBaseAdmin is used to retrieve the table descriptor, in order to scan through
 table attributes for transformation directives.
I think it is best to rip it out, its a real problem area, and REST should be
no more concerned about data formats than the Java API.
I doubt anyone uses this, not even Jack. Will need to follow up with him to
 confirm.

That argument pretty much sinks this approach for me.

At the same time we should not put a full transactional API into HBase, but
rather provide enough building blocks so that an outside client could implement
transactions. I do not see how we can do that without exposing knowledge about
some internals such as regions.

Another approach is to give more control over which set of rows can participate
in a transaction.
Right now that is all KVs with the same row-key (internally we achieve by
collocating all those KVs, but that is an implementation detail).
What if we allow a prefix of the row key instead? We can even formalize that,
and give the row key some internal (optional) structure, which allows the
application to specific transaction groups.

As discussed (at length) on the dev mailing list with the HBASE-3584 and
HBASE-5203 committed, supporting atomic cross row transactions within a
 region becomes simple.
I am aware of the hesitation about the usefulness of this feature, but we
 have to start somewhere.
Let's use this jira for discussion, I'll attach a patch (with tests)
 momentarily to make this concrete.

@Stack:
Thanks for your review.
Looks like we still have some work to really solve this issue. After that we
can align naming to your liking.

w.r.t. local log splitting, to my knowledge there is no priority in distributed
log splitting. The rationale is to make log splitting of .META. server quick.

So your thinking is that we'd go local in case a distributed log splitting is
already going on? That would work for the case where say ten servers went down
around same time and the tenth queued had meta on it. But then, what if there
is no distributed log splitting going on? Master-only log splitting would be
slower than distributed splitting?

From our experience, cluster can be well balanced and yet, one table's
regions may be badly concentrated on few region servers.
For example, one table has 839 regions (380 regions at time of table
creation) out of which 202 are on one server.
It would be desirable for load balancer to distribute regions for specified
tables evenly across the cluster. Each of such tables has number of regions
 many times the cluster size.

Will need to follow up with him to
 confirm.

bq. Another approach is to give more control over which set of rows can
participate in a transaction.

If we did row prefix instead, it'd have to be an input to the table splitting
function so we didn't split in the middle of a transactions row set. Doesn't
sound hard. Would be part of table schema.

bq. What if we allow a prefix of the row key instead?
That's essentially the approach that both DynamoDB and Oracle's NoSQL db take.
But, the way I see it, we already have that -- the row key is the prefix of
the row key, and the column key is the rest of the row key. What would an
extra element of key structure give us?

From thread on lily-discuss entitle: 'Lily Performance':

 * and then, check that the regions of each table are assigned round-robin,
thus that each region server has a similar amount of regions of each table.
More on this at http://docs.outerthought.org/lily-docs-current/g6/562-lily.html

If user has to use script to achieve the above, we should implement it in core.

In patch v10:
{code}
+this.fileSystemManager.splitLog(metaServerInfo.getServerName());
+this.serverManager.expireServer(metaServerInfo);
{code}
In latest patch, fileSystemManager.splitLog() is gone.

I think what might have happened was that waitUntilNoLogDir() returned too soon
because the log splitting was carried out in ShutdownHandler which barely got a
chance of doing the split.

Patch v13 adds DEBUG logging in waitUntilNoLogDir() so that we know whether the
log dir exists upon its entry and how long waitUntilNoLogDir() takes before
returning.

Concurrent processing of processFaileOver and ServerShutdownHandler may cause
region to be assigned before log splitting is completed, causing data loss

If master's processing its failover and ServerShutdownHandler's processing
happen concurrently, it may appear following case.
 1.master completed splitLogAfterStartup()

[jira] [Created] (HBASE-5232) hbase-daemons.sh cannot be used do launch zookeeper independently from HBase

2012-01-19 Thread nkeywal (Created) (JIRA)
hbase-daemons.sh cannot be used do launch zookeeper independently from HBase

 Key: HBASE-5232
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-5232
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
  Components: scripts
Affects Versions: 0.94.0
Reporter: nkeywal
Priority: Minor

The HBaseBook says in chapter 2.5.1
{noformat}
If you would like to run ZooKeeper yourself, independent of HBase start/stop,
you would do the following

${HBASE_HOME}/bin/hbase-daemons.sh {start,stop} zookeeper

Note that you can use HBase in this manner to spin up a ZooKeeper cluster,
unrelated to HBase. Just make sure to set HBASE_MANAGES_ZK to false if you want
it to stay up across HBase restarts so that when HBase shuts down, it doesn't
take ZooKeeper down with it.
{noformat}

However, it does not work because the hbase-daemons script always calls
zookeepers.sh which checks HBASE_MANAGES_ZK and does nothing when it's not set
to true.

Imho, the best solution would be to keep the documentation and change the
scripts.

Can you please review patch v4 ?

Implement atomic update operations (checkAndPut, checkAndDelete) for REST
 client/server

 Key: HBASE-4720
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-4720
 Project: HBase

 HBASE-4720.v3.patch

I have several large application/HBase clusters where an application node
will occasionally need to talk to HBase from a different cluster. In order
to help ensure some of my consistency guarantees I have a sentinel table that
is updated atomically as users interact with the system. This works quite
well for the regular hbase client but the REST client does not implement
the checkAndPut and checkAndDelete operations. This exposes the application
to some race conditions that have to be worked around. It would be ideal if
the same checkAndPut/checkAndDelete operations could be supported by the REST
 client.

That is true when it comes to storage.
However our (current) API is mostly row based. There is no way to start or stop
a stop a scan at a column, there are many assumptions about rows baked into the
scanner, etc. I don't think ColumnRangeFilter would be good enough here.

Declaring a prefix and honoring it during splitting seems simpler and more in
line with our current API and (probably?) what a user would expect.

It is another avenue, though. For example we can add Scan.set{Start|Stop}Key
(where we can present prefixes of the full key, rather than just the row key),
and handle it accordingly at the server. Would also need a nextKeyValue (or
nextColumn or something) method on ResultScanner along with the server code
that does this efficiently.

Philip Zeyliger commented on HBASE-5229:

Just to kibitz a little bit:

The approach you're proposing will only ever let you do local transactions:
transactions clearly related to a prefix-friendly set of rows. For example,
if, say, inserting a tweet is transactional, but there's a global hash tag
index, you might want to make deleting a tweet transactional in the sense that
it'll clean up the index entry for you. You're never going to get the index to
be on the same region. It's possible to implement multi-row transactions on
top of single row transactions (by putting a write a head log there, see
Megastore at http://research.google.com/pubs/pub36971.html).

On the other hand, if you're cool with that, and even just local transactions
could be very useful to many users and is probably quite efficient. As a user,
I'd much prefer dealing with single rows, or row prefixes, than hoping that my
rows are on the same region server.

Will need to follow up with him to
 confirm.

Thanks Philip. Yep, that's the idea with this. Global transactions would be
handled differently and be *far* more heavyweight (and must be used judiciously
or your load will not scale).

The transactions I have in mind with this would be just as fast as a current
Puts/Deletes (with the drawback that related data would be collocated).

Matt Corgan commented on HBASE-5229:

I think the approach of expanding and improving support for gigantic rows would
be cleaner than adding another consistency guarantee to hbase's feature list.
Combining very wide rows with many column families, each with separate settings
and compactions provides a good framework for all sorts of different data
models on top. You could let a row become so big that it's the only row on a
machine if you want.

From what I can tell from papers and presentations, BigTable actually supports
many gigabyte EntityGroups. They mention it at 6:18 in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO015C3R6dw . I'm not sure how Entity Groups
can span machines and still enforce transactionality. I had thought that an
entity group was confined to a single BigTable row, maybe that means they do
span BigTable regions. Anyone know how that works?

Nicolas Spiegelberg resolved HBASE-3976.

Resolution: Incomplete

its very hard to tell if this issue is corrected in trunk or not. Talked
offline with Mikhail about strategies for getting proper resolution here.
HBASE-5230 has been made to verify that this issue is indeed fixed will
encompass a fix if other subtle bugs remain.

 Disable Block Cache On Compactions

 Key: HBASE-3976

Is there a good reason to believe that caching blocks during compactions is
beneficial? Currently, if block cache is enabled on a certain family, then
every time it's compacted, we load all of its blocks into the (LRU) cache, at
the expense of the legitimately hot ones.
As a matter of fact, this concern was raised earlier in HBASE-1597, which
rightly points out that, we should not bog down the LRU with unneccessary
blocks during compaction. Even though that issue has been marked as fixed,
it looks like it ought to be reopened.
Should we err on the side of caution and not cache blocks during compactions
period (as illustrated in the attached patch)? Or, can we be selectively
aggressive about what blocks do get cached during compaction (e.g., only
cache those blocks from the recent files)?

The current bottleneck to HBase write speed is replicating the WAL appends
across different datanodes. We can speed up this process by compressing the
HLog. Current plan involves using a dictionary to compress table name, region
id, cf name, and possibly other bits of repeated data. Also, HLog format may
be changed in other ways to produce a smaller HLog.

The current bottleneck to HBase write speed is replicating the WAL appends
across different datanodes. We can speed up this process by compressing the
HLog. Current plan involves using a dictionary to compress table name, region
id, cf name, and possibly other bits of repeated data. Also, HLog format may

There could be more going on, but let's get this problem settled and keep

 [REST] Rip out transform feature
 --

 Key: HBASE-5228
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-5228
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Bug
Affects Versions: 0.92.0, 0.94.0, 0.90.5
Reporter: Andrew Purtell
Assignee: Andrew Purtell
 Fix For: 0.94.0, 0.92.1, 0.90.6

 Attachments: HBASE-5228-0.92.patch, HBASE-5228-trunk.patch

Will need to follow up with him to
 confirm.

If master's processing its failover and ServerShutdownHandler's processing
happen concurrently, it may appear following case.
 1.master completed splitLogAfterStartup()

Phabricator commented on HBASE-4218:

Kannan has commented on the revision [jira] [HBASE-4218] HFile data block
encoding framework and delta encoding implementation.

a few more minor comments. I still have a few more files left to review.

INLINE COMMENTS

src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/io/encoding/PrefixKeyDeltaEncoder.java:45
rename: offset - prevOffset
  src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/util/ByteBufferUtils.java:158 we can
avoid this duplication, and instead call the other load of copyToStream, and
pass offset = 0.
  src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/util/ByteBufferUtils.java:192 length
name is confusing for 2nd argument. This function can put any long. Rename
length - value; and tmpLength - tmpValue.
  src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/util/ByteBufferUtils.java:471 There are
4 overloads of the readCompressedInt().

The first 2 work on a 7-bit encoding scheme.

The next 2 work on a different format of encoding. These overloads are also
unused other than tests. Let's remove these two overloads.

A compression for keys. Keys are sorted in HFile and they are usually very
similar. Because of that, it is possible to design better compression than
 general purpose algorithms,
It is an additional step designed to be used in memory. It aims to save
memory in cache as well as speeding seeks within HFileBlocks. It should
improve performance a lot, if key lengths are larger than value lengths. For
example, it makes a lot of sense to use it when value is a counter.
Initial tests on real data (key length = ~ 90 bytes , value length = 8 bytes)
shows that I could achieve decent level of compression:
  key compression ratio: 92%
  total compression ratio: 85%
LZO on the same data: 85%
  LZO after delta encoding: 91%
While having much better performance (20-80% faster decompression ratio than
LZO). Moreover, it should allow far more efficient seeking which should
 improve performance a bit.
It seems that a simple compression algorithms are good enough. Most of the
savings are due to prefix compression, int128 encoding, timestamp diffs and
bitfields to avoid duplication. That way, comparisons of compressed data can
be much faster than a byte comparator (thanks to prefix compression and
 bitfields).
In order to implement it in HBase two important changes in design will be
 needed:
-solidify interface to HFileBlock / HFileReader Scanner to provide seeking
and iterating; access to uncompressed buffer in HFileBlock will have bad
 performance
-extend comparators to support comparison assuming that N first bytes are
equal (or some fields are equal)

If master's processing its failover and ServerShutdownHandler's processing
happen concurrently, it may appear following case.
 1.master completed splitLogAfterStartup()

TestMetaReaderEditor is missing call to CatalogTracker.stop()
 -

 Key: HBASE-5223
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-5223
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Test
Reporter: Zhihong Yu
Assignee: Zhihong Yu
 Fix For: 0.94.0, 0.92.1

 Attachments: 5223.txt

I noticed that TestMetaReaderEditor hung on 0.92 Jenkins builds - see
 https://builds.apache.org/view/G-L/view/HBase/job/HBase-0.92/249/console
It turns out that CatalogTracker.stop() is missing.
