[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-19731) TestFromClientSide#testCheckAndDeleteWithCompareOp and testNullQualifier are flakey

Duo Zhang commented on HBASE-19731:
---

[~stack] I think the problem is we assigned the same timestamp twice.

I added a static tsAssigned field in HRegion

{code}
  public static volatile List tsAssigned;
{code}

And in MutationBatchOperation.prepareMiniBatchOperations, I did this
{code}
  if (!region.getRegionInfo().isMetaRegion() && HRegion.tsAssigned != null)
{
HRegion.tsAssigned.add(timestamp);
  }
{code}

And I also modified the UT
{code}
  @Test
  public void test() throws IOException {
try {
  for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
testCheckAndDeleteWithCompareOp();
TEST_UTIL.deleteTable(TableName.valueOf(name.getMethodName()));
HRegion.tsAssigned = null;
  }
} catch (AssertionError e) {
  HRegion.tsAssigned.forEach(System.out::println);
  throw e;
}
  }
{code}

Notice that I will create HRegion.tsAssigned in testCheckAndDeleteWithCompareOp
after the creation of the test table.

And finally I got this output
{noformat}
1515397552529
1515397552533
1515397552535
1515397552537
1515397552539
1515397552541
1515397552543
1515397552546
1515397552547
1515397552548
1515397552549
1515397552550
1515397552551
1515397552554
1515397552555
1515397552556
1515397552556
{noformat}

You can see that the test fails immediately after we issue the same ts again.

This means we are doing faster mutation for beta1 so it is more easier to run
into this situation? Maybe a good news...

[~carp84] here is my test result:
Split one 512MB HLog on a single regionserver
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12905029/split-1-log.png!
we can see in most situation new logic has a better performance than the old
one.

The motivation I do this improvement is when a cluster has to restart, if there
are too many regions per region, the restart is prone to failure and we have to
split one hlog each time to avoid errors. So I test when restart the whole
cluster, how many throughput it can reach with different thread count.

Throughput when we restart a cluster, which has 18 regionservers and 18
datanodes
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12905030/split_test_result.png!
blue series represent the throughput of the cluster has 2 regions and
regions per rs, while red series has 4 regions, regions per rs and
orange series has 8 regions and per rs.
This is the table if the chart is not clear:
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12905026/split-table.png!
Depend on this chart, I think the time cost when you restart the whole cluster
is not related to the thread count. More regions this Hlog contains, more time
it will cost to split.

Duo Zhang commented on HBASE-19726:

OK, I think I find the problem. It is caused by the problematic zk. The update
is succeeded, but when we call TableStateManager.setTableState, the
ConnectionImplementation can not get the correct meta znode from zk and lead to
the exception thrown. And then an infinite retrying.

Anyway, I think there are two problems. First, do we need to write the state of
hbase:meta to hbase:meta? Seems not. Second, if we need to write the state to
hbase:meta, then it could fail since this is an ipc call, the retry does not
work if we fail here.

What do you think sir? [~stack]

Thanks.

[jira] [Updated] (HBASE-19358) Improve the stability of splitting log when do fail over

Jingyun Tian updated HBASE-19358:
-
Description:
The way we splitting log now is like the following figure:
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12905027/split-logic-old.jpg!
The problem is the OutputSink will write the recovered edits during splitting
log, which means it will create one WriterAndPath for each region and retain it
until the end. If the cluster is small and the number of regions per rs is
large, it will create too many HDFS streams at the same time. Then it is prone
to failure since each datanode need to handle too many streams.

Thus I come up with a new way to split log.
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12905028/split-logic-new.jpg!
We try to cache all the recovered edits, but if it exceeds the MaxHeapUsage, we
will pick the largest EntryBuffer and write it to a file (close the writer
after finish). Then after we read all entries into memory, we will start a
writeAndCloseThreadPool, it starts a certain number of threads to write all
buffers to files. Thus it will not create HDFS streams more than
*_hbase.regionserver.hlog.splitlog.writer.threads_* we set.
The biggest benefit is we can control the number of streams we create during
splitting log,
it will not exceeds *_hbase.regionserver.wal.max.splitters *
hbase.regionserver.hlog.splitlog.writer.threads_*, but before it is
*_hbase.regionserver.wal.max.splitters * the number of region the hlog
contains_*.

Throughput when we restart a cluster, which has 18 regionservers and 18
datanodes
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12904504/split_test_result.png!
blue series represent the throughput of the cluster has 2 regions and
regions per rs, while red series has 4 regions, regions per rs and
orange series has 8 regions and per rs.
This is the table if the chart is not clear:
!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12904508/split-table.png!
Depend on this chart, I think the time cost when you restart the whole cluster
is not related to the thread count. More regions this Hlog contains, more time
it will cost to split.

!https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12904507/split-logic-new.jpg!
The biggest benefit is we can control the number of streams we create during
splitting log,
it will not exceeds *_hbase.regionserver.wal.max.splitters *
hbase.regionserver.hlog.splitlog.writer.threads_*, but before it is
*_hbase.regionserver.wal.max.splitters * the number of region the hlog
contains_*.

 Summary: TestFromClientSide#testCheckAndDeleteWithCompareOp and
testNullQualifier are flakey
 Key: HBASE-19731
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-19731
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Sub-task
  Components: test
Reporter: stack
Assignee: stack
Priority: Critical
 Fix For: 2.0.0-beta-2

These two tests fail frequently locally; rare does this suite pass.

The failures are either of these two tests. Unfortunately, running the test
standalone does not bring on the issue; need to run the whole suite.

In both cases, we have a Delete followed by a Put and then a checkAnd* -type
operation which does a Get expecting to find the just put Put but it fails on
occasion.

Looks to be an mvcc issues or Put going in at same timestamp as the Delete. Its
hard to debug given any added logging seems to make it all pass again.

Seems this too is new in beta-1. Running tests against alpha-4 seem to pass.

Doing a compare

Thanks [~elserj]. On face of it, seems checkstyle is generating a bad jar
(1.8/later zlibs are more strict apparently; exception is ''ZipException:
invalid distance too far back'). Could play w/ alternate delivery of the
checkstyle-suppressions.xml from a file rather than jar location if can't
figure the jar packaging issue.

{code}javadoc:aggregate package{code} is gobbledegook (don't forget bit where
we then ask to suppress javadoc on same command-line and we throw in a failsafe
verify too) so not too worried about that one. The other,
install+site+assembly, is our 'standard' RC generation command-line that we've
been using for 'years' so that would be good to fix (see doc on how to generate
an rc). I can use the workaround of not doing checkstyle on bundle of tarball
for now, just in the previous step where we populate the repo; means we get the
benefit of checkstyle but skip it assembling.

Currently trying alpha4. It didn't seem to have this issue. Might give us a

Actually there're more places where {{filesCompacting}} is accessed w/o any
{{lock.readLock()/writeLock()}} protection such as lines at bottom of the

> INCLUDE_AND_NEXT_COL from filter doesn't skip remaining versions of the cell
> if the scan has explicit columns.
> This is because we use a column hint from a column tracker to prepare a cell
> for seeking to next column but we are not updating column tracker with next
> column when filter returns INCLUDE_AND_NEXT_COL.

when (filterResponse, matchCode) = (INCLUDE_AND_SEEK_NEXT_ROW, INCLUDE) or
(INCLUDE_AND_SEEK_NEXT_ROW, INCLUDE_AND_NEXT_COL) ,  we should return
INCLUDE_AND_SEEK_NEXT_ROW as the merged match code.

[jira] [Resolved] (HBASE-19358) Improve the stability of splitting log when do fail over

2018-01-07 Thread Yu Li (JIRA)

 [
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-19358?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel
 ]

Yu Li resolved HBASE-19358.
---
  Resolution: Fixed
Hadoop Flags: Reviewed
Release Note: After HBASE-19358 we introduced a new property
hbase.split.writer.creation.bounded to limit the opening writers for each
WALSplitter. If set to true, we won't open any writer for recovered.edits until
the entries accumulated in memory reaching
hbase.regionserver.hlog.splitlog.buffersize (which defaults at 128M) and will
write and close the file in one go instead of keeping the writer open. It's
false by default and we recommend to set it to true if your cluster has a high
region load (like more than 300 regions per RS), especially when you observed
obvious NN/HDFS slow down during hbase (single RS or cluster) failover.

Thanks for the note boss [~andrew.purt...@gmail.com] and will notice next time
(the branch-2-v2 patch was quite close for commit but I was interrupted by
something else thus left it over, my bad...)

Pushed into branch-2 and added some release note. Please check the release note
and feel free to amend it if necessary [~tianjingyun] [~Apache9], thanks.

Closing issue, thanks all for review.

> The way we splitting log now is like the following figure:
> !https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12904506/split-logic-old.jpg!
> The problem is the OutputSink will write the recovered edits during splitting
> log, which means it will create one WriterAndPath for each region and retain
> it until the end. If the cluster is small and the number of regions per rs is
> large, it will create too many HDFS streams at the same time. Then it is
> prone to failure since each datanode need to handle too many streams.
> Thus I come up with a new way to split log.
> !https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/attachment/12904507/split-logic-new.jpg!
> We try to cache all the recovered edits, but if it exceeds the MaxHeapUsage,
> we will pick the largest EntryBuffer and write it to a file (close the writer
> after finish). Then after we read all entries into memory, we will start a
> writeAndCloseThreadPool, it starts a certain number of threads to write all
> buffers to files. Thus it will not create HDFS streams more than
> *_hbase.regionserver.hlog.splitlog.writer.threads_* we set.
> The biggest benefit is we can control the number of streams we create during
> splitting log,
> it will not exceeds *_hbase.regionserver.wal.max.splitters *
> hbase.regionserver.hlog.splitlog.writer.threads_*, but before it is
> *_hbase.regionserver.wal.max.splitters * the number of region the hlog
> contains_*.

This seems also because of the problematic zk, but I tend to keep it open since
the code is still a bit confusing to me.

[jira] [Commented] (HBASE-19725) Build fails, unable to read hbase/checkstyle-suppressions.xml "invalid distance too far back"

Josh Elser commented on HBASE-19725:

I spent a bit of time digging into this issue (at least, the one that Ted
filed) over Xmas break. Sadly, to no avail.

I'm not entirely convinced this isn't a Maven issue itself. I'm guessing that
both: {{mvn javadoc:aggregate package}} and {{mvn install assembly:single
-Papache-release}} are both triggering some similar codepath. I didn't see
anything obviously wrong with the changes that Jan had made.

Ted's maven goal salad is no good to me; it is missing 'site'.

For beta1, I can skip checkstyle report for now while figure what's up here.

Why verify? Why aggregate javadoc when pom does that? Then why skip javadoc?
Where did this assortment of a command come from? It worked from scratch or
was it a continuation? It works for default profile? I can try but this
unorthodox and it takes time building and perhaps you have answers?

Looking at Misty's fancy script at
dev-support/jenkins-scripts/generate-hbase-website.sh, she does install in one
step then site in following. Building tgz with assembly, we need install + site
on the line along w/ assembly.

Passing -Dcheckstyle.skip=true I can get the tgz to build (its still running).
Means we don't have checkstyle report but we'll have checkstyle benefit because
the tgz is done after a clean install to check all good.

> I have 5 things in the {{make_patch.sh}} script where I see room for
> improvement:
> 1) BUG:
> Assume my working branch is called {{HBASE-19673}}
> Now if I run
> {{dev-support/make_patch.sh -b origin/branch-1}}
> a patch is created with the name
> {{~/patches/HBASE-19673.v1.branch-1.patch}}
> When I run the same command again the version is not incremented.
> The reason is that the script checks for {{HBASE-19673.v1.patch}} which is
> without the branch name.
> 2) Messy: The first patch created does NOT include the version tag at all.
> 3) Messy: The version starts with '1' so when we reach patch '10' they will
> be ordered incorrectly in Jira (which is based on name)
> 4) New feature: I personally prefer using the timestamp as the 'version' of
> the patch because these are much easier to order.
> 5) Messy: If you for example only have one file {{HBASE-19674.v05.patch}}
> then the next file generated will be {{HBASE-19674.v01.patch}} instead of the
> expected {{HBASE-19674.v06.patch}}

What 'passed' here? Resume with -rf :hbase-error-prone or build from scratch?

Restart and then everything is OK.

I guess there maybe a master failover in the initialization of RS and it makes
the RS confused?

[~Jan Hentschel] Thanks for chiming in. Error is same but Ted was running some
arbitrary set of build commands Site needs install not package. Then
claimed it worked. Doesn't say what he did.

The above install + site is how we build RCs. See
http://hbase.apache.org/book.html#maven.release.

It worked when I did alpha RC4 so something recent.

I'll keep digging

 Summary: Build fails, unable to read
hbase/checkstyle-suppressions.xml "invalid distance too far back"
 Key: HBASE-19725
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HBASE-19725
 Project: HBase
  Issue Type: Sub-task
Reporter: stack
Assignee: stack
Priority: Blocker

Build is failing on me (Trying to cut beta-1 RC on branch-2). It is first time
we go to use the jars made by hbase-checkstyle in the hbase-error-prone module
under 'build support' module when running the 'site' target. It is trying to
make the checkstyle report.

I see that we find the right jar to read:

[DEBUG] The resource 'hbase/checkstyle-suppressions.xml' was found as
jar:file:/home/stack/rc/hbase-2.0.0-beta-1.20180107T061305Z/repository/org/apache/hbase/hbase-checkstyle/2.0.0-beta-1/hbase-checkstyle-2.0.0-beta-1.jar!/hbase/checkstyle-suppressions.xml.

But then it thinks the jar corrupt 'ZipException: invalid distance too far
back'.

Here is mvn output:

12667058 [ERROR] Failed to execute goal
org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-checkstyle-plugin:2.17:check (checkstyle) on
project hbase-error-prone: Failed during checkstyle executi on: Unable
to process suppressions file location: hbase/checkstyle-suppressions.xml:
Cannot create file-based resource:invalid distance too far back -> [Help 1]

execute goal org.apache.maven.plugins:maven-checkstyle-plugin:2.17:check
(checkstyle) on project hba se-error-prone: Failed during checkstyle
execution

I'm running this command:

mvn -X install -DskipTests site assembly:single -Papache-release -Prelease
-Dmaven.repo.local=//home/stack/rc/hbase-2.0.0-beta-1.20180107T061305Z/repository

> Correlating across more runs, whenever the tests passes, it does so within
> 10-30sec of 3min deadline for medium tests.
> So i think we can make it pass by just increasing the timeout.
> But I'm a bit skeptical after seeing all those long GC pauses (10sec +) in
> the log. Test code doesn't seem to be doing anything that intensive. Are we
> mismanaging the memory somewhere?
