Nah, its not you I'd say [~eshcar] Our master branch is a little 
dodgy...flakey. See here,

over last few builds, I don't think any of the failures from this patch. Will

I'm going to commit. If objection, shout and I'll revert.

I ran comparison ycsb loadings of raw master branch against master with this 
patch. Numbers come out close enough (with patch 50/50 does better but not as 
well in the 20/80 write scenario). I looked at a running ycsb 20/80% writes 
with profiler and the ugly stuff is not from this patch.

Related, I tried backporting to 1.2 because thats what my rig  had running but 
its not an easy task mostly because of where we pass CellComparator in master 
and KeyValue.KVComparator in branch.

(CellBlocksSrgment), which does not take MutableSegment on construction. 

So, no adapter is necessary in this case? How are they made?

bq. It is possible to do it this way. We believe exposing an unnecessary API 
which incurs costly implementation is not advisable.

What you say makes sense. What you think of my continual stumbling over this 
ImmutableSegment vs MutableSegment and that there are sometimes Adapters?

bq. This method returns a KeyValueScanner that is used by MemStoreSnapshot, but 
it scans the cells in the segment who generated it.

My misunderstanding. Thanks.

would be getSegmentScanner().

Yes. This would be clearer I believe.

Thats all my concerns addressed. Let me try and get a basic test run to make 
sure basically performs the same but put up a v11 w/ the above small changes 
and I'll commit unless objection from others ([~anoop.hbase] or [~enis]).

We could simplify the design by removing the distinction between mutable and 
immutable segments but this would be at the cost of implementing unnecessary 
API, possibly not efficiently. 
Consider tailSet(firstCell), it is similar for first() and getComparator(). 
tailSet is used in the methods AbstractMemStore::upsert() and 
AbstractMemStore::updateColumnValue() where it is applied only to the active 
(mutable) segment, and in methods of MutableCellSetSegment and 
MutableCellSetSegmentScanner. It is not needed in any use case for an immutable 
segment. However, its implementation in CellBlocksSegment would be inefficient 
since it will incur costly traversal over all cell blocks plus allocating many 
new objects to be stored in the result sorted set. 
It is possible to do it this way. We believe exposing an unnecessary API which 
incurs costly implementation is not advisable.

We believe it is good practice to only expose the minimal necessary 
functionality.

No, this is incorrect. This method returns a KeyValueScanner that is used *by* 
MemStoreSnapshot, but _it scans the cells in the segment who generated it_.

nit: We create a snapshot on construction of an AbstractMemStore. We do not 
initialize snapshotId so its value is 0 yet when we clear a snapshot later, we 
set snapshotId to -1. Should we set -1 to when create instance of this class?

This javadoc seems wrong. We return a List with one element in it only, not two 
as the javadoc implies.

(A simplification which can be done in a followup patch?) So, we create a 
MutableSegment first, and then when it gets shoved onto the Pipeline, we wrap 
it in an ImmutableSegmentAdapter which makes a MutableSegment Immutable? Why 
you need the Adapter? Looks like an ImmutableSegment, like the butterfly from 
the caterpillar, is always first a MutableSegment? So, an ImmutableSegment 
takes a MutableSegment on construction? You can skip the pupa 
ImmutableSegmentAdapter? (It is the only implementation of ImmutableSegment).

FYI, trying to get rid of the need of a rollback in HBASE-15158

Reading the MutableSegment looking at the methods it has, why can't they all be 
in ImmutableSegment? What is wrong with having tailSet, first, getComparator, 
etc., on ImmutableSegment? These methods do not seem to be means of making 
mutation on a segment. And why this subset of Set methods in MutableSegment? 
Why not last, headSet, etc. that are in getScannerForMemStoreSnapshot(); 

In ImmutableSegment, there is this method:

getScannerForMemStoreSnapshot();

As I read it, I am getting a Scanner on a MemStoreSnapshot but MemStoreSnapshot 
is a Type that is not an ImmutableSegment. (it 'has' an IS); I am getting a 
Scanner on something else altogether. When I have a pipeline made up of 
ImmutableSegments will I be able to callt this method on any of them and get a 
Scanner on the current MemStoreSnapshot? It seems like this does not belong in 
here. I can understand getting a Scanner on myself, the current 
ImmutableSegment but a Scanner on another Type that I am contained in seems 
unnatural.

What is special about MutableCellSetSegmentScanner?  When would the Scanner on 
a MutableSegment differ from Scanner on an ImmutableSegment? In other words, 
could we just have a SegmentScanner implementation and it work for both Segment

call for flush.  That is why we need this new seqId param in snapshot() call

No problem - I can explain again:
When an external flush is invoked (call to snapshot()), the data is flushed to 
disk, but some data may still be left in memory.
The sequenceId is passed to the memstore so it can do a bookkeeping of sequence 
ids and compute an approximation of the lowest sequence id (oldest entry) still 
in memory.
updateLowestUnflushedSequenceIdInWal() is called when completing a flush to 
disk and when completing an in-memory compaction. These are the two events when 
the content of the memory changes. This method updates the wal with the lowest 
sequence id that is still in memory, as explained above.
