Hi, [~anoop.hbase]
v6 did what you suggested.
addSize() is called regardless of isClientCellBlockSupported in scan and multi,
which is correct because the size is used for other checks.
For get and mutate, there is no other use of the size.

Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-15437:

minor comment
{code}
addResult(builder, r, controller, isClientCellBlockSupport(context));
2625  addSize(context, r, null);
{code}
If isClientCellBlockSupport, then only addSize() can be called. (As did
above).. Any way functionally no issues as at using place, we consider the
isClientCellBlockSupport fact.

Can fix on commit  +1

Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-15437:

Ya seems like now addSize() calls are not duplicated.
bq.long responseSize = result.getSerializedSize() + call.getResponseCellSize();
I can see in the patch we added addSize() in 2 places. One within
isClientCellBlockSupport check and one not. Also the existing calls to
addSize() seems not with any check on isClientCellBlockSupport. That means
when client is not supporting cell block, the results are PBed into 'result' PB
object and its getSerializedSize includes every thing. Adding again
call.getResponseCellSize() seems to duplicate the size in some cases.
We can better change the above one liner to consider isClientCellBlockSupport
and do + call.getResponseCellSize()?

Also as per the patch we add
RpcCallContext context = RpcServer.getCurrentCall();
into mutate() method.  And below we have addResult(builder, r, controller);
existing call which in turn again trying to read the context from ThreadLocal.
We can override addResult() passing an extra boolean 'clientCellBlockSupported'?

Oh that make sense.. I did not think that Call is within RpcServer.. Ya that
will be bad..
Also we have Call in client side and server side.. We need a better name for
the interface u make.

Hi, [~anoop.hbase]

It would be cleaner, hierarchy and conceptual. RpcServer.Call is heavily
tangled in RpcServer, RpcServer implements RpcServerInterface. If we put
RpcServer.Call in RpcServerInterface, it would be messy.

Looking at it more.
It does not seem right to pass RpcServer.Call, which is an implementation
class, to the interface level RpcServerInterface.
We could do it, but ideal.
Ideally, we should define an interface level 'Call', and give it to
RpcServerInterface. And because of this separation of a 'Call' interface and
the implementation class, we can hopefully remove the
{noformat}InterfaceAudience.LimitedPrivate({HBaseInterfaceAudience.COPROC,
HBaseInterfaceAudience.PHOENIX}){noformat} from the RpcServer.Call class.
Also, why the entire RpcServer is annotated with
{noformat}InterfaceAudience.LimitedPrivate({HBaseInterfaceAudience.COPROC,
HBaseInterfaceAudience.PHOENIX}){noformat}

Hmm. This above added accounting is for mutate. Also where is the accounting
done in the private get method?

If I understand [~enis] comment correctly, we can change the signature of call
method in RpcServer. Let me see what we can do.

This extra accounting is not needed. You can see this private method called
from get(final RpcController controller,final GetRequest request) where we are
doing the accounting now. Other place is doNonAtomicRegionMutation() where also
accounting is already in place.
The other place addition looks ok

In RpcServer#call(), we will have to get the Call instance from ThreadLocal..
This point is discussed above.. Its a pity we dont pass Call object here. So
what do u say? How we can change signature?

Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-15437:

It is metric on response data size not exactly like response RPC size right?
Seeing the use of too large, we add some logs. That means user is trying to
fetch too much of data in a single call. There is all chances of timeouts and
memory overuse. (We do have heartbeats, early part response based on size/time
BTW) So I feel we need continue with the old way of raw data size which we are
returning. At RPC side there might be encoding/compression based on the cluster
needs.

The RPC responseSize should be defined as the raw Results/Cells size, or the

bq. As it is exposed to coproc and Phoenix, better handle the format way of
deprecate and overload? We can be more formal there than checking whether
Phoenix uses it or not? IMHO that is better always
No coprocessor or Phoenix should be using {{RpcServerInterface.run()}}
directly, but should rely on {{CallRunner}}. We had made the whole rpc
scheduler / controller interfaces {{InterfaceAudience.LimitedPrivate}} to
support a particular use case (index). We should not corner ourselves with
supporting APIs that are not intended for generic consumption. Plus across
minor versions, there are no guarantees for coproc APIs anyway.

So, I think we can do something like this. Just change the API in master and
branch-1, and 1.3, and if we want to backport this as a bug fix (which it is)
to 1.1, 1.2, we can introduce the deprecated API.

[~dvdreddy] can you do those changes?

Sorry for the mistake, fixed it now.

bq. Its pity that we dont pass Call to this method and so we need to do get it
from ThreadLoal which will have slight perf overhead. And this method is marked
non private.

Yeah I tried to some how get the Call to this method (I was looking all the
callee's of this method actually send the params by taking them from call
object), but felt like it turns out to be a bigger refactoring process and
might also break some external facing pluggable APIs and then decided to take
this route.

Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-15437:

Why? We calc the responseSize before this. Looks like the warn message
intended to show both the time and response size in it.
You are checking with single row gets case.. What abt scan and multi gets.
Those were already using cellBlocks as payload way. There also we missed
cellBlocks size from calc the total response size?
