Ted Yu commented on HBASE-16736:

How about adding getMaxHeapSize ?

It would be clear for CombinedBlockCache#getMaxHeapSize to return L1 cache size.

bq.The setMaxSize() method is changing lruCache only. Hence I make getMaxSize()

Ya.. Because changing max size is only applicable for Resizable cache. L1 only
comes in that. But any Block Cache is having a max size. Actually u can see
getters in LRU cache and Bucket cache already. Only thing is it was not there
part of any interface. That is why my Q was. Whether it make more sense to add
the getter in BlockCache interface itself. And then comes Q abt Combined
cache. The get max size returning only L1 cache size is strange IMO. As such
we dont have a clear usage area now, better we dont add it then?

bq. In case of CombinedCache why to get from L1 cache alone?

The setMaxSize() method is changing lruCache only. Hence I make getMaxSize()
symmetrical to the setter.

bq. Then do we need L2 size also considered?

This is related to the above aspect where max size doesn't consider off heap
size. I think we should keep the current behavior.

I prefer patch v1.

Ya.
But few things to consider. First of all this is not exactly the heap size.
In case of L2 cache this can be off heap size or even file size.
In case of CombinedCache why to get from L1 cache alone?
In case of L1 cache also, some times there can be victim L2 cache (L2 also
present with combinedMode = false). Then do we need L2 size also considered?

Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-16736:

Am sorry.. Typo.. I mean BlockCache. Does it make sense to add a getter for
the max capacity of the cache in the BlockCache interface itself. setter make
sense in ResizableBlockCache interface. The getter need not be restricted for
Resizable cache. wdyt?

Ted Yu commented on HBASE-16736:

I found the typo as well.

BucketCache doesn't extend ResizableBlockCache so I don't see the need to add
the getter there.

The new method can be used in reporting and in assertion(s) of tests.

Anoop Sam John commented on HBASE-16736:

bq.long setMaxSize();
Typo. U want getMaxSize.

Does it make sense to add the getter in the BC itself? Even if the cache is
not resizable, getting the max capacity of a cache make sense. What is the
need for this getter now? Want use in some reporting place?
