I have changed the name "hbase.hregion.compacting.memstore.threshold" to
"hbase.hregion.compacting.pipeline.segments.limit".
I have moved the initialization of the pipeline limit to take place in the
constructor.
The final patch is attached here and on the RB, although the change is small.

I added a minor comment on RB to extract the threshold once in c'tor instead of
repeatedly on every action.
Other than that looks good.
+1 from me.

Patch looks good.
{code}
public static final String COMPACTING_MEMSTORE_THRESHOLD_KEY =
51"hbase.hregion.compacting.memstore.threshold";
{code}
Am not sure whether this name is correct. This is a threshold value for
#segments above which there will be in memory merge. So seeing this one may
not get what threshold it is. Compacting memstore will have threshold for in
memory flush also (Segment flush to pipeline)/ So pls give a better/clear name.

[~stack], thanks for taking a look :)

The merging is existing possibility in the code and will happen if we change
COMPACTING_MEMSTORE_THRESHOLD_DEFAULT in the code or
hbase.hregion.compacting.memstore.threshold in the hbase-site to be less than
4. This JIRA intends to fixs bugs in merge and make it configurable. Under
HBASE-16417 there is a discussion whether to make the merge part of the default
configuration or not. This JIRA doesn't turn the merge into default. I am
adding now a merge test to this patch and soon is going to publish a new patch.

This addition is useless. Don't bother with it if you making new patch

I am going to upload patch later with other changes.

closeSuffix and updateRegionSize booleans are not logically related.
closeSuffix is saying whether to close the MSLABs of the removed segments
(shouldn't be done for merge)
updateRegionSize is saying whether to inform the region about the size change
(shouldn't be done on snapshot, before snapshot fully flushed to disk)

Haven't seen the added comment since no new patch is uploaded.

When closeSuffix is true, why the if block updating the global memstore size
counter is skipped ?

Hi [~ram_krish],

Actually I didn't increase the threshold to 30, it was 30 since we turned to
use NONE, BASIC and EAGER memstore types. For now for BASIC we actually never
merge the segments, but we do flatten the youngest segment. Here we make the
threshold configurable because we see it should be actually better to decrease
this number.

REading thro the patch, now since you have increased the threshold to 30, you
will not do the MERGE till 30 is reached and so the data will be read from
multiple segments only. But you will keep flattening the youngest segment?

[~anoop.hbase], in addition to what [~ebortnik] had answered you, your math is
correct. 16 should be max and 30 stands there for safety. According to our
recent experiments, we are not sure the default way should be no merge. But let
discuss it when we publish the results. Currently the #segments in pipeline is
configurable and can be any number. Pay attention that this patch also fixes
the bug according to which the region server wasn't updated with the new sizes
when the merge did happened.

Merge means that only the index data is restructured. We create a larger
segment with one index - but no data is copied. Also, we avoid using the SQM
scan (more expensive), so duplicate data versions are not eliminated. Bottom
line - (1) the overhead and the space savings are both between BASIC and EAGER,
and (2) the tail read latency problem is solved.

We'll be publishing the perf results shortly. Following that, let's
collectively decide whether MERGE should be a level between BASIC and EAGER, or
maybe just become the new BASIC, for simplicity.

Thanks.

So here the merge means the cell data also will get copied to new MSLAB right?
Or it is just merge of the index data?
Ya make that 30 to be configurable is fine IMO.
In ur tests how much this #segments in pipeline gets to?As per the math it
can not be more than 16 no?
Default 128 MB flush size and 4x as blocking factor. And 25% of flush size is
what the in memory flush cap.So we can have 4 * 4 segments at max in
pipeline? Or my math is somewhere wrong? Accordingly the default of this
config we need to adjust. IMO than a 30 value, we should do this way.. When
the config values of this in memory flush factor and/or blocking factor
changes, we need to adjust this new config so as to make the default way of no
merge. Ya one can always change it then.
