Move out to beta-2, but I think this is a useful feature and we should try to
implement in the future.

Skimmed the patch. Looks good to me. The sync of schema over peer is
synchronous I suppose? Can work on making it async later.

Nihal Jain commented on HBASE-18822:

My approach for the following points:
 * Table creation/alter ops are replicated to all its peer irrespective of the
replication state of the peers. It is good behavior wise as it will ensure
things are in sync completely. But, what if the admin disables a peer, do we
still want to sync create table to the peer? Or should we sync to a peer only
if the peer is enabled?
** *APPROACH*: We will sync creation/alter ops for configured table
irrespective of the replication state of the peers, whether peer is ENABLED or
DISABLED.

 * Similarly table creation/alter ops are replicated irrespective of the
replication scope. It is good behavior wise as it will ensure things are in
sync completely. But, still  we discuss about should we sync to a peer only if
the replication scope is 1?
** *APPROACH*: Sync creation/alter ops for configured table irrespective of
the replication scope of the table.

 * If table already exists in peer cluster but with a different descriptor, it
successfully creates table in active cluster. Should we log some warning if
table descriptor is different on the peer?
** *APPROACH*: Log arror and skip table. We also add tablename to fail message
list, which is logged at the end. Admins can check log and do the need ful.
 * If we perform the following ops in order:
** (a) Create table in active cluster
 ** (b) Add peer cluster
** (c) Modify the table created in step a
** *RESULT*: It will get stuck in procedure retry loop (in RUNNABLE STATE) and
will get a TableNotFoundException in each retry. The procedure will never
complete as it think it is a retriable error.
** *APPROACH*: Handles non-existant tables in peer and log the error.
 * Table with the same name exists in active and peer cluster; both having
familiy c1. If we alter the table t1 and set version = 5 for family c1 in
active cluster, it will skip modifying table in peer. Because the patch only
handles supporting add column / delete column. Not to alter existing column
families. But by sync don't we mean we want to sync everything? What if the
active goes down with t1:c1:version=5, while the peer which is used for
disaster recovery solution just supports t1:c1:version=1 (i.e. whatever was
descriptor property of the column family while creation)
** *APPROACH*: We also sync table attributes to the peer. It supports all of:
addColumnFamily / modifyColumnFamily / deleteColumnFamily / modifyTable
 * Table with the same name exists in active and peer cluster but with families
f1, f2 in active and families c1, c2 in peer cluster. If we alter the table t1
to drop family f1 in active cluster, since the count logic is used (not
descriptor comparison. WHY?), it will replace the existing descriptor of peer
and drop families c1 and c2 (along with data, if any) from peer and add family
f1 to it (as this is the new descriptor in active).
** *APPROACH*: Mismatch in descriptor we will skip modification, we donot
consider replication scope while matching descriptors.
 * Table with the same name exists in active and peer cluster but with families
f1, f2 in active and family c1 in peer cluster. If we alter the table t1 to
drop family f1 in active cluster, it will skip modifying table in peer as count
is same. Again, should we log some warning if table descriptor is different on
the peer?
** *APPROACH*: Not using count based logic.

Nihal Jain commented on HBASE-18822:

I tried this patch on my cluster and had the following observations/comments on
proposed patch:
 * Table creation/alter ops are replicated to all its peer irrespective of the
replication state of the peers. It is good behavior wise as it will ensure
things are in sync completely. But, what if the admin disables a peer, do we
still want to sync create table to the peer? Or should we sync to a peer only
if the peer is enabled?

 * Similarly table creation/alter ops are replicated irrespective of the
replication scope. It is good behavior wise as it will ensure things are in
sync completely. But, still  we discuss about should we sync to a peer only if
the replication scope is 1?

 * If table already exists in peer cluster but with a different descriptor, it
successfully creates table in active cluster. Should we log some warning if
table descriptor is different on the peer?
 * If we perform the following ops in order:
** (a) Create table in active cluster
 ** (b) Add peer cluster
** (c) Modify the table created in step a
** *RESULT*: It will get stuck in procedure retry loop (in RUNNABLE STATE) and
will get a TableNotFoundException in each retry. The procedure will never
complete as it think it is a retriable error.
 ** *StackTrace:*

 * Table with the same name exists in active and peer cluster but with families
f1, f2 in active and families c1, c2 in peer cluster. If we alter the table t1
to drop family f1 in active cluster, since the count logic is used (not
descriptor comparison. WHY?), it will replace the existing descriptor of peer
and drop families c1 and c2 (along with data, if any) from peer and add family
f1 to it (as this is the new descriptor in active).
 * Table with the same name exists in active and peer cluster but with families
f1, f2 in active and family c1 in peer cluster. If we alter the table t1 to
drop family f1 in active cluster, it will skip modifying table in peer as count
is same. Again, should we log some warning if table descriptor is different on
the peer?

bq. Ashish Singhi also have the same concern I guess.
No, mine is not that and I have tried my best to explain my concern above.

bq. I have only one concern, why are we replicating table during its creation,
table will be replicated to the desired peers when replication is enabled for
that.
I think this should be ok, when a user create table in source cluster
immediately it is created in peer cluster and then the user has to just change
the replication scope. (Thinking from a user POV who is not using
enable_table_replication command)

[~openinx] thanks for showing this patch.

One question, seems like this patch makes the best effort to sync tables but
does not guarantee all synced. Especially when I read
#syncSchemaModificationToPeer, I realize it only modifies table when cf count
is different. So there are still some work users need to do to verify/make sure
table schema is synced.

I get that point [~openinx]. My only concern is, unless explicitly a user
specify any table for replication all the tables will be synced to peer

[~ashish singhi], it's the correct behaviour, because if we don't sync the
table to peer cluster, then the replication will be stuck.

Exactly, by default it is true which means all the tables schema will be synced
to peer cluster.

bq. What will happen when a user doesn't explicitly specify any namespace or
table in replication peer config ?
Depends on the peer's replicateAllUserTables, if true, then will replicate to
peer, if false then won't. you can see the RepliationUtils#contains method
https://github.com/apache/hbase/blob/master/hbase-replication/src/main/java/org/apache/hadoop/hbase/replication/ReplicationUtils.java#L160

We use it to decide whether need to replicate ddl or not :-)

bq. This will create all the tables in the peer cluster after enabling it. May
be some user are not interested in all the tables data replication but still we
will end up in creating the table in all the peers.
[~ashish singhi], No all tables, Only when the replication peer config contains
the table, then the DDL of this table will be replicated to peer cluster. For
example, we have a peer with namespace ns, then all tables DDL under namespace
ns will replicate to peer cluster..

Looked at the patch at high level.
This will create all the tables in the peer cluster after enabling it. May be
some user are not interested in all the tables data replication but still we
will end up in creating the table in all the peers.
Can we instead add a boolean to DDL APIs, by default false and on true we can
replicate the same operation in peer clusters. We have done the same way in my
previous employer. WDYT ?
