Okay, although I'd prefer making it clearer instead of deleting it. (IMHO
information is helpful even when it doesn't quite match the section title.)
Anyway you've explained it here, so the information is still available. Thanks.

This whole sentence was confusing
I just wanted to point out the positive side of this: that it will compile the
integration tests too when it's enabled; and that might come handy if someone
is working on api changesafter a few minutes i ended up removing it because
this thing doesn't really align with the section's topic.

[~kgyrtkirk], in the docs there's one sentence I don't understand:

bq. And by having -Pitests around you are always compiling the integrations
tests to...this can improve compile time error detection.

Should "to..." be "too..."? Or is something omitted?

This looks good to me, at least to enable better itests imports into the IDE.
The ptest changes are not mandatory - and a separate jira can be used to make
additional changes for ptest to potentially use this profile.

Tried this on IntelliJ and Eclipse - worked fine. Also local mvn installs with
and without the profile.

Waiting for the jenkins run to commit. [~spena], [~ashutoshc] - do you see any
concerns with the patch ?

Thanks [~kgyrtkirk]. The docs at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/Hive/HowToContribute will also need
to be updated. Is that something you can take up once the patch is committed ?

i'm using the profile based patch locally - and it enables the execution of
itests from the command line without having to install the project; which is a
good thing to have

i can't reassign the ticket; or add files to it...as far as i recall; earlier i
was able to assign tasks to myself - at least i'm sure i've assigned to myself
unassigned ones.

[~kgyrtkirk] - I'd be in favour of the second approach, which allows the tests
to be run from the top level with a profile, unless there's some downsides to
it ? Will the profile need to be specified within the itest directory as well ?
That would break existing usage scenarios as well.

Please feel free to take over this jira, if you're making this change.

[~spena] - should we look at failsafe in an alternate jira ? Looks like
[~kgyrtkirk] already has an approach identified which builds itest directly,
improved IDE integration and avoids running the itests when invoking mvn test
from the top level.

[~kgyrtkirk] Your changes may work great for this :)

I'd like to build itests/ from the root and make it easy for IDE to see it as
part of the project. It's good we can skip these long q-tests from running when
executing 'mvn test' from the root.

I know there is a build phase on maven to execute integration tests with {{mvn
verify}}. This uses the maven failsafe plugin. Do you think we can do something
with that plugin that allows q-test execution from the root directory?

i've played with this a bit...I just want to add the itests module
anyhow...without breaking the existing usage pattern.
i don't wanted to pollute this ticket with alternatives...so i used some
pastebin tool

the following maven changes disables the integration test executions if the
'itests' folder exists in the current dirrectory -> cwd==hive.root
http://hastebin.com/omuzuwaboj.xml
with this there is no way to run integration tests from the root project; and
AFAIK there is no way to enable that - but for ide profiles its enough
but there is a positive side of this solution: itests subtree is compiled with
the rest of the project

it would be also possible to enable itests using some profile;
positive: from the root directory anyone could use a more sophisticated command
to directly run integration tests {{mvn test -rf itests/qtest -Pitests
-Dtest=TestCliDriver -Dqfile=view.q}}
http://hastebin.com/lukesukuva.xml

[~kgyrtkirk] There definitely is interest in having ability to run .q tests
directly from IDE. Thanks for taking a look.
[~spena] IMHO, making it easier for devs to able to run q test out of the box
without any hassle far outweighs the risk of folks running mvn test from top
dir and waiting forever. We can document that.

[jira] [Commented] (HIVE-13490) Change itests to be part of the main Hive build

I've also attached the itests to my top level project; and i've played a lot
with eclipse to be able to execute most of the unit tests directly from eclipse
; plus the qtests...I'm glad that it works now ;)
But it's not very easy to set it up...i've uncovered a few things - which could
be addressed programatically, or by using some conventions:
 * there are a few path related properties (${test.data.files} and friends)
which could be defaulted to some path if the project root is known - the
project root can be detected by a few simple checks (for example existence of
the {{ql}} directory...or anything special) - I would definetly keep the finer
grained properties - but they wouldn't be mandatory anymore
 * every test execution gets it's hive configuration xmls thru an extra
classpath entry supplied by the maven surefire plugin - if the configuration
could be kept in a unique directory - it could be loaded more precisely without
problems for the ide.
 * i'm not a maven expert but it might be possible to mask the itests / test
task by using some kind of profile - this might prevent {{mvn test}} from
recklessly executing integration tests by default

are there any intrest in these?

OK. That helps me understand why these have been kept separate. If we want to
separate unit tests vs integration tests - I think log4j gives us a good means
to achieve this (don't recall if it was categories or something else). That
would be a better way to approach this than artificially separating the tests.
I'll see if I can work on this.
Meanwhile, anyone who wants the IDE fix - can apply this patch. I pretty much
have it permanently applied locally.

Sergio Peña commented on HIVE-13490:

I think "itests" should be kept separately from the root project to
differentiate from real 'unit' tests vs 'integration' tests.

Some developers would like to run only unit tests, and they can execute {{mvn
test}} from the root directory. But, with this change, if we run {{mvn test}},
it will execute all "itests" as well, and this can run for hours.

Sorry, but I'll have to do a -1 until we decide what's better. Btw, I like your
idea to manage IntelliJ, but I'm afraid this will cause others people testing
infra to run more time.

Thanks for the pointer [~ashutoshc]. From the thread, I'm still a little
unclear on why we don't want to link the two projects. Is it to avoid a long
test run if someone accidentally runs a mvn test ?
Don't really see too much more interest here, but I'd imagine this is useful
for Hive developers (at least new ones). I'm guessing everyone has their
existing workflows to modify itests which work for them.

I think it will be good to run tests with failsafe plugin so that tests don't
exit on first failure.
