IMO, I usually feel pretty strongly about not carrying around documentation for deprecated or discouraged features - feel free to cut away whatever we don't really want people using if you think that's the best option. "The Well-Configured Solr Instance" as a section heading is from the very first edition of the Ref Guide and has become a sort of catch-all place to put configuration-related docs that don't fit in any other category until such time as those various topics got more content to warrant their own sections (like you're proposing here) or I miraculously found time to come up with something better. If Plugin stuff now warrants a move out of there, go ahead. bq. can we use folders to organize our .adoc files instead of having them all in one super-long list? I don't think we can just change that without some other changes to Jekyll, and pretty much every single link that points to another file would need to be updated to reflect the proper path. I broadly agree with almost everything you just said.
Eventally, I believe there should be only 2 ways of loading plugins in Solr
* place your jars in $SOLR_HOME/lib
* Use the package management framework we just built
We should deprecate,
* {{}} directives in {{solrconfig.xml}}
* runtimeLib loaded from blob store
There is almost nothing a user can achieve that we cannot achieve using the
former 2 preferred method.
So, We should have a top level page called Solr Plugin management with the
first two highlighted and we should also have say that the next two will be
deprecated soon

We don't have a docs specific issue and since the work has already happened under this issue, then here it is. I will add my high level structural comments about the docs without getting into line-by-line (yet). [~ichattopadhyaya] [~noble.paul] [~ctargett] please review my high level points here. I nominate myself to make the changes but I want this strategy vetted first. Solr already has some documentation about the notion of plugins, so we must contend with that in a wholistic review instead of just adding some new adoc into our tree somewhere. Solr has a second level "Solr Plugins" nav category/page -- "solr-plugins.adoc" that is underneath "The Well-Configured Solr Instance". Such category pages are rather important to get right in communicating the big ideas to frame what this is all about and at a high level what does Solr offer. I also think our page organization is rather important for the same reason and for discoverability. I'm not sure I like the category "The Well-Configured Solr Instance". It's opening sentence (an important sentence to get right) claims it's about performance. I would not have guessed! What do we think about moving Solr Plugins to the top level, assuming we beef it up, which I'm about to describe? The solr-plugins.adoc page today has a decent opening couple paragraphs speaking in broad strokes, but then has only one last paragraph relating to the "Blob Store API" & runtimeLib. That system is currently the only child page. Little does the user know this is deprecated functionality. I advocate that we make this section of our guide (Solr Plugins) more comprehensive. We already have a decent page "resource-and-plugin-loading.adoc" covering lib directives that is very pertinent to Solr Plugins that is currently located beneath "Configuring solrconfig.xml". I think that _used to_ be a great place for it before there was a "Solr Plugins" nav but now I think it's here beneath Solr Plugins. Ishan/Noble placed the "Package Management" "package-manager.adoc" underneath "The Well-Configured Solr Instance" but I very much disagree; I feel this must go beneath "Solr Plugins". I think we should communicate 3 paths: # Place jars of plugins in certain "lib" dirs or reference via solrconfig.xml lib directive (similar) # Use the new Package Manager system # Use the old Blob Store & Runtime Lib system On this page we can point out some broad pros/cons (e.g. not supporting schema plugins), but further details will be on the respective pages. Repo handling is already implemented in SOLR-10665, and here is the CLI syntax:

Of course, the POC does not deal with multiple simultaneous versions of same
plugin, but that is not hard to extend.
You should not be required to know the version number of the plugin when
installing, like in your proposal in this issue. Instead, the plugin installer
compares your Solr version with the "requires" expression in the repository
manifest and resolves the newest plugin version that is compatible with your
system. So say you still run Solr 7.5.1 then the package manager will give you
DIH v7.5.1 when you do {{solr install dih}}
Also I don't think users should need to specify what collections the plugin is
available for. We should optimize for the 80% usecase, i.e. make the latest
version of the plugin available for ALL collections. Instead of deciding this
install-time I proposed in
[https://www.slideshare.net/janhoy/solrs-missing-plugin-ecosystem/47] to define
a {{my-plugin}} tag in solrconfig.xml. That *could* be
extended to include a specific version too, but in my mind, what version(s) of
a certain plugin to install is more dependent on the actual version of Solr you
run than it is of the features you need to use in a given collection.
