I intend to agree broadly. I even filed the disabled PR. It will be reviewed and merged sooner than the UI for sure. I think that it's fine if the package is pulled in as a pinned version and included in the CI pipeline. I'm particularly not looking forward to working with Noble but I hope that we can be respectful to drive this project to completion. That way, the admin UI can iterate faster. But perhaps that should be a future state because that requires a lot more work and bureaucracy from someone here. I'm happy to do a lot of the leg work on the actual build, recruit devs to pitch in, and even host a server teaching people who to use the Admin UI. If the desire is to have it live in a separate repository, then @Jan Høydahl can you work on this ASAP. Jeremy, the developer who originally started the Angular project and wrote the first page of the project that I have been building upon, and I have discussed the effort and regular meetings. I think we could move really fast working together, but I won't be able to say how fast until the end of next week. I personally agree 100% with what [~gus] said on the email thread. * The UI is critical for Solr. if it's a package for modularization purposes may be fine (I didn't look much into the packages design yet), but I think it needs to be on by default. Having the ability to "disable" it could be nice too, but not as important to me, I'd always want it on. * It's very difficult to have the UI live in a separate repo and not fall out of sync. Can't be compared with Kibana or any other enterprise product. I don't think this is a good idea. * I'd love for the UI to run in the same process as Solr and not have to start/monitor another app. > New Admin UI > > > Key: SOLR-14414 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-14414 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. I'm obviously still working through many things, like grokking the new Angular form API, limiting results, and lots of styling. In this way, users don't have to go all the back to the left menu and change most of the viewport to navigate through different screens of the same collection. Navigating between collections is also easier in this way. Ultimately, I would want to support really seamless results traversal and even pagination and so that users can dig in. I have big plans for the analysis screen as well, which is personally my favorite. I think the changes to the collection screens will be the biggest productivity and accessibility improvement for developers and users of Solr worldwide. I've pushed this code up into the PR for this issue. At some point soon after the community comes to consensus, and this is accepted, I will loop in a few old pals that will lend a hand where they can. As for releases, I'd be enthusiastic about supporting new releases from the Solr Admin UI indefinitely until others ramp up on maintenance or other community members step up to assist in this area. > New Admin UI > > > Key: SOLR-14414 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-14414 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. That's all. I sense Noble is adamant. bq. Adding to a very heavy codebase is going to make it even more unhealthy. I think we are talking about _replacing_ the admin UI with one that has tests and is generally more maintainable. Thus I think we'll be in a better place then we are today no matter where this UI lives! bq. We need to have bug fix releases for all of them. Unfortunately, I think this problem won't go away if the UI is a separate project since it'd ship with Solr still. Shipping it with Solr means its bugs become our concern as well. And there will actually be more pain on this point because it will necessitate a new release on the dependency. Come to think of it, I think this is enough of a pain point for me to prefer keeping the UI code with the Solr project. But I'll be happy with either outcome. As for the gap discussion, I will leave to [~ichattopadhyaya]. Solr deciding to keep the old UI in favor of a new UI that is secure will have bad consequences for its users. For one, many of them working in highly secure environments will never be able to run it. If they wish to, they will be bogged down by months of approvals and paperwork. Secondly, an external UI application will likely not be a part of Apache's CI pipeline. We will either fix bugs in the current UI or remove it altogether. :) This is effectively a "fix[ing of the] bugs" in the current UI. I did not change much of the design. Kept the framework (in name), preserved most of the design except the really confusing or outdated bits, and added basic tests with the intention fo adding more. If I remove the package management piece from the discussion, I don't see any work from you at all. I'm sure I could work with a few others in the group to help with the ongoing maintenance of the UI, particularly those interested in security and usability of Solr. There are quite a few committers who focus on those areas. >An admin UI is a nice to have feature and not a critical part of a search >engine [~noble.paul]Nor is a package management system. It's also a nice to have. There are many ways and many people on the team that could review or evaluate the tool for functionality or bugs. It is still a work in progress, and I don't think I have to work with you on getting it implemented as a package. It can more easily be started by Jetty. All of the tests and start commands can drop into the existing pipeline. My offer to add it as a package was an attempt to create a package that almost everyone would use, and to make the UI a first-class citizen there, so it might one day be easy for a UI contributor to make a browser for the package manager itself. I am simply replacing it with updated code. The maintenance would not be much greater than the current Admin UI, and in fact the burden should be lower because of the testability and modularity of this UI. If something on the backend breaks the Solr UI, you will probably know before it reaches master. Number of files is a surface-level metric, and without context it lacks value and significance. We do not want to burdened with another 131 files which most developers in this group cannot understand or maintain. As ishan said, we can ship the UI along with our distributions (if we have consensus) . But, I STRONGLY OPPOSE committing this to our codebase. > New Admin UI > > > Key: SOLR-14414 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-14414 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level. [jira] [Commented] (SOLR-14414) New Admin UI
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-14414?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel=17087233#comment-17087233 ] Ishan Chattopadhyaya commented on SOLR-14414: - As I see things, there were two important points discussed in that thread: # This new UI code should not be part of Solr codebase. # Solr users should be able to use this UI as a package, perhaps even as a default option. In order to reconcile those two goals, here are two options: # The UI code stays in your code repository (github) and released via your package repository. Solr script can have an easy to use and documented (in ref guide) way to start Solr with your UI. # The UI code stays in your code repository (github) and you do periodic releases from your repository. Solr distribution can include your UI as a dependency (similar to how we've used spatial4j, noggit, Hadoop etc.) and have it as a default upon startup. The benefits of not including the UI code in Solr codebase is for faster iteration. Also, Solr committers shouldn't need to maintain UI code that they don't (as a community) have an expertise in. > New Admin UI > > > Key: SOLR-14414 > URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-14414 > Project: Solr > Issue Type: Improvement > Security Level: Public(Default Security Level.
