Was Surefire timed out by Travis in the project {{calcite-core}}?
I think the native stream STDOUT was corrupted by printing JVM and GC messages, 
see [1] - how did you print it?.
Please remove all switches like {{-Xlint}}, {{-XX}}, {{-verbose:}}, etc. if you 
are printing some jvm logs by jvm to the console.
Give it a try and let me know then.
Do you use {{FileDescriptor.out}} from Java NIO or some native library printing 
to std/out and std/err, or {{System.exit()}} or {{Runtime.halt()}} or 
ShutdownHook ?

I haven't had the problem on Windows either, just in the Docker container so 
far, but I assume this might be a general problem on linux, though I can't say 
for sure.
