How are you attaching the AOO doc to an email.

 1. Are you creating an email and adding the doc to it as an attachment?

 2. Or are you using the Apache OpenOffice menu selection File > Send >
"Document as E-mail ..." feature? In that case, there may be a problem finding
a default email client on your machine and this is raising what you call a
"block." On your machine, because Microsoft Office is present, it may be
trying to use Microsoft Outlook but you haven't activated it.

 3. Also, please provide the exact message that you receive when it comes up.

What do you use to send email from your Windows 10 system? That is important
to know so that we can figure out how you can adjust your configuration to
remove that problem.

Also, are you creating documents in Microsoft Office formats or are the open
documents in OpenDocument Format (the default Writer, Calc, and Impress with
extensions .odt, .ods, and .odp)?

[Issue 126942] New: MS Office blocking AOO attachment to email

2016-04-28 Thread bugzilla
https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=126942

  Issue ID: 126942
Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: MS Office blocking AOO attachment to email
   Product: Writer
   Version: 3.3.0 or older (OOo)
  Hardware: PC
OS: Windows 10
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: Blocker
  Priority: P5 (lowest)
 Component: save-export
  Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
  Reporter: bobadono...@q.com

Sometimes I get an MSOffice box interrupting my attach of a AOO doc to an
email. The message says to check in Programs for a repair. I don't want to
acknowledge MS Office Suite - too expensive. It is on my computer but has not
been activated. I can't work around the block using extension odt and html?
anyway, one other extension. Can MS block my AOO legitimately?

Note that stripping of hidden content also protects an user who inadvertently
forwards a document containing hidden content unknown to them.

ANALYSIS

 1. It is confirmed that hidden sections are removed from documents send
directly from Apache OpenOffice *and* LibreOffice.

 2. It is also confirmed that hidden section are not very secret, and that some
applications reveal them automatically. That is true for the Microsoft Office
Word 2016 handling of ODT files. (WordPad, on the other hand, does not show
the hidden section [;<).

OBSERVATIONS

 1. The removal of hidden information is intended to accomplish two things:
inadvertent disclosure and also protection of recipients from certain
document-security vulnerabilities involving covert content and silently mining
content on an user's computer.

 2. The removal of hidden information when "Send Document as E-mail ..." is
used is appropriate default behavior that protects casual users. It is also
important that the behavior with Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice are the
same.

 3. That does not mean there could not be an option to retain hidden content,
although that involves expert users able to understand the implications and to
accomplish their purposes despite the use of hidden sections not being designed
as a privacy mechanism. The current default should be preserved.

Demonstration that Word 2016 will not hide ODT hidden sections

The Attachment 84309 Hidden sections are not hidden when the ODT document is
opened directly in Word 2016. This is demonstration that some applications do
not recognize hidden sections in ODF documents.

While not directly tied to the original issue statements, it is confirmation
that hiding is not a fool-proof privacy mechanism. That needs to be taken into
consideration when appraising an use case that hidden content is meant to
support.

Immediately on clicking the selection in Attachment 85508, this error message

it might be used generically by Windows 10 because Outlook is installed.

This confirms that Windows/Outlook are recognizing a programmatic request to
create an email message, but the request cannot be fulfilled for some reason.
The suggestion to set Outlook as the default mail client is spurious in this
case because it is already the default as confirmed in Attachment 85506 and

I am having trouble with this test case. If it is the saved document (not the
document opened in Apache OpenOffice), then it is not Apache OpenOffice that is
touching the document as it is being sent as an email attachment.

Should step (7) be reworded to have the saved document opened in Apache
OpenOffice and sent via File > Send > Document as email ... ?

Yes, the two attachments are truly .docx files.

They apparently include screen shots of .odt files. That does not allow us to
analyze the .odt to see what is actually happening. We need the actual files,
not screen shots.

Also, providing screen shots inside Microsoft Word documents limits analysis of
the issue to contributors who have Microsoft Office installed. That's not a
good expectation considering that our focus is on OpenOffice and its "native"
formats here. (I install and use all of the products in order to analyze
interoperability, including with Office 365. That's an exceptional case.)

For screen captures, it is better to use PNG files, which anyone who is doing
QA can presumably open and use. (JPEG files are often too blurry to be
helpful.) In this case, though, it is the actual ODT files that matter, since
we can only see how "hidden" is being handled that way.

I am baffled about something. These two issue attachments are identified as
.docx documents, not .odt documents.

I think we need to verify reproducibility with sending .odt documents to a
recipient that has OpenOffice installed. Otherwise, we are getting confused
about conversion cases between OpenOffice and Microsoft Office.

(I will look at these attachments to see what they really are, also.)

You might see if any of the approaches provided at Issue 126188 are of any use
with OpenOffice.org 3.2.

You did not identify your hardware and Operating System. Is there some
limitation that requires you to stay with 3.2? Apache OpenOffice releases
started with 3.4 and are now up to 4.1.2.
