Re: Two questions on Swing:

1998-11-18 Thread peter . pilgrim

1) There is a problem with XFree86 that prevents top level accelerators
being installed. I believe this with Metrolink X server with any problem.
Mind you I have the exact same problem on
sparc-sun-solaris-2.5.1-cde-motif1.2-jdk1.1.6-swing-1.1-beta-2

2) I think you can override the installed PLAF (pluggable look and feel)
settings, but it means search through the source code in the
`com.sun.swing.plaf.basic.BasicScrollBarUI' class. I think you must override the
defaults that are loaded in the UIManager properties.

UIManager.put("scroll.bar.foreground", Color.red );

It is stupid that you can't customise externally the components.
Give me X resources any day. Perhaps that how JavaSoft should have coded it.
Maybe it needs a :

public class Resource { String name, Object value }

Resource resources[] = {
{ "troughArea.foreground", Color.red },
{ "troughArea.arrowColour", Color.blue },
}

UIApplicationsResources.registerResources( JScrollBar.getUI().getClass(),
resources );

...

// Read French Canadian property bundle file MyAppBundle_fr_ca.properties

ResourceBundle bundle=ResourceBundle.getBundle( "MyAppBundle" )
UIApplicationsResources.mergeBundle( "MyApplication", bundle )

Something like that. Dreaming ...

Here are two questions I've had on swing. One pertains to java-linux,
the other doesn't, but you guys have been very helpful to me so I
thought I'd ask both.

1) Accessing top level menus via keyboard in Swing. Using Swing 1.0.3
and jdk 1.1.6. I can attach keystrokes to menu items via setMnemonic
and this works. When I attach keystrokes via setMnemonic() to top level
JMenu, however, the keystroke doesn't work, even though the mnemonicized
keystroke does appear in the Menu onscreen. That's under redhat 5.0.
If I take the program and run it on Win95 then the key stroke access
does work. What's going on here?

2) Is there any way to change the colors of the arrow buttons and thumb
in a JScrollBar? I can change everything but that and with the colors
I've chosen, they look really stupid. I realize that this probably
violates the whole look and feel idea which is so prevalent in Swing, but
there ought to be some way to get at these things.

It's a step in the right direction. M$ has 90 days to fix things.
Whether they will and whether they'll find a way of sliming out of
this obligation is an open question. Call me paranoid but until I
see M$ in pieces and/or Gates destitute and begging in the gutter
I will not rest easy. Apart from the matter of appeals, this is
only a temporary injunction and not a final decision: the case
has not gone to trial.

[ANNOUNCE] New Release Xenon-SQL V2.2.9.8

1998-11-18 Thread peter . pilgrim

SOFTWARE RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT
===

Xenonsoft, South London, England is very pleased to announce the
availability of:

Xenon-SQL, the java based interactive SQL Editor, version 2.2.9.
 The Personal End User Edition.

This software allows you use connect to relational database like MySql,
Sybase, and Oracle and submit SQL queries and commands to the target
databases. In order for `Xenon-SQL' to connect to a database you __MUST__
have a suitable JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) driver specifically for
your database. Most commercial database suppliers have a supplied (or
contributed) JDBC driver around somewhere, so surf the Internet to find it!

The Xenon-SQL software can be obtain from the FTP server:

   `ftp://ftp.demon.net/pub/java'

or as a last resort `http://www.xenonsoft.demon.co.uk/software.html'.

The requires the Java Development Kit minimum version 1.1.5 and Swing also
known as the Java Foundation Classes miminum version 1.2-Beta 2. These are
available from JavaSoft's web site: `http://java.sun.com/products/'

*** WARNING ***: The software will __NOT__ work with JFC 1.2-Beta 3 because
this release features the new stable package name `javax.swing.*'. The
current version of the software expects to find Swing under the package
name `com.sun.java.swing.*' as in the JFC 1.2-Beta 2 release.

*** NOTE ***: In the near-future, `Xenon-SQL' will be upgraded to use the
new JFC/Swing package names.

The software was developed on a Linuxed/PC with Blackdown's 1.1.6v3 port of
the JDK `http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux.html'

SunSoft[tm] maintains a list of JDBC drivers from a number of third party
vendors on it web pages See the following URL for a list of JDBC drivers
provided:

http://java.sun.com:80/products/jdbc/jdbc.drivers.html

Please read the license file `LICENSE*'. For installation instructions read
the `INSTALL' file.

NEW FEATURES
=

o Xenon-SQL is now MULTI-THREADED! Each editor frame can now execute
   separate SQL commands as a background task. The application is no longer
   blocked on the AWT event queue. No more hours glasses or watches. A
   background command thread is started with the [Execute] button. The
   thread can be halted by the new [Stop] image button. I did a test to
   prove the concept worked by forcing the thread to sleep 10.0 seconds
   whilst using two editor frames.

o Since Xenon-SQL is now multithreaded. Two new components have been
   created and introduced, namely the `JFlashProgressPanelBar' and
   `JStatusBar'. The flash progress bar animates when SQL command is
   executed as a background task. The status bar is container for the new
   flash progress bar and a message label, where `Xenon-SQL' writes generic
   messages.

o Xenon-SQL now uses the `JFileChooser' component, because the API is more
   stable. SQL command history can save in `native' format and portable
   `ascii' text format. The native format is a java object serialisation,
   and the text format allows you to edit and change the entire SQL command
   history in an external editor, such as GNU Emacs. Save your some changes
   and reload the history back into Xenon SQL.

o Meta Data Query Tree Dialog displays extra tree nodes in addition to
   representing all catalogues in the database. The new tree nodes are
   primary keys, imported key, exported keys, database types, and index
   information. There new node have some nice icons to go with them.

o `Strategies' to calculate the best column width in a table, and therefore
   display a visually pleasantly table.

o `Pluggable Look And Feel' overdue support for a standard Swing/JFC
   feature. Yes. `Xenon-SQL' can now switch between "look and feels".

o `SliderDials' to control the row height and the intercell spacing in the
   tables. These slider dials behave look and behave similar to the leading
   edge dials as seen in the Silicon Graphics[tm] `Inventor' 3D Graphics
   application.

o A user request to load up multiple JDBC drivers at start-up time has been
   added. The property in the `~/.xsql_login' file has been changed to
   allow this. The property is now called `Xsql.jdbc.driverList'.

o More internationalisation has been added to fully support the above new
   features.

OLD FEATURES 2.1.7p01
===

The software has been tested:

+ against MySQL[tm] compiled on Linux with the
   `twz1.jdbc.mysql.jdbcMysqlDriver' JDBC driver.

+  against Sybase[tm] SQL Server/11.03 with the
   `connect.syabse.SybaseDriver 3.0' JDBC driver.

You can download the Java Foundation Classes from JavaSoft:

RMI binding bug

1998-11-18 Thread Douglas T. Brown

Can someone help me out, here? I'm sure that some of you have solved this
problem long ago. . . In fact, there is one thread in the Java-Linux archives
that deals
with this. I tried putting my machine as the first line in /etc/hosts as suggested:

xxx.xxx.x.2 MyHostName MyHostName.mydomain.com
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

but that didn't work.

Here's the story:

I'm relatively new to Linux and Java and I'm trying to figure out how to get
past the known bug in RMI bind/rebind that throws an AccessException in, as
Sun puts it, "some network configurations."

I've read (in Thinking in Java) that this can be solved by having an open PPP
connection, but I don't have PPP set up on my Linux box.

My ethernet network has thus far run fine in terms of successfully running FTP
and HTTP servers, and consists of:

Linux box:
MkLinux DR3 on a Mac G3 266 MHz minitower
IP address of xxx.xxx.x.2
default gateway of xxx.xxx.x.1
JDK 1.1.6 v5

No nameserver is set up

A Mac PowerBook

An ethernet patch cable running between the two machines.

Here's the code I'm trying to run, plain vanilla taken straight out of the
Java.Sun site example:

**
1:  The Remote Interface HelloInt

import java.rmi.*;

public interface HelloInt extends Remote {
public String sayHello () throws java.rmi.RemoteException;
}

**
2:  The main class HelloImpl

import java.rmi.*;
import java.rmi.server.*;
import java.net.*;

public class HelloImpl extends UnicastRemoteObject implements HelloInt {

public String name;

public HelloImpl (String s) throws RemoteException {
super();
name = s;
}

public String sayHello() throws RemoteException {
return "Hello World!";
}

public static void main (String args []) {

System.setSecurityManager (new RMISecurityManager());

try {
HelloImpl h = new HelloImpl ("HelloServer");
System.out.println ("Attempting to rebind . . .");
Naming.rebind ("//localhost/HelloServer", h);
System.out.println ("Hello Server bound . . .");
}
catch (RemoteException re) {
System.out.println ("RemoteException in HelloImpl.main:  " +
 re.getMessage());
re.printStackTrace();
}
catch (MalformedURLException e) {
System.out.println ("MalformedURLException in HelloImpl.main:
" + e.getMessage());
e.printStackTrace();
}

}
}

Everything compiles. I start up rmiregistry. I run rmic on HelloImpl.I run
HelloImpl and it constructs the object 'h', but then I get the AccessException.

I've tried the following arg's for rebind to no avail:
("//localhost/HelloServer", h)
("//127.0.0.1/HelloServer", h)
("//xxx.xxx.x.2/HelloServer", h)
("//MyHostName/HelloServer", h)
("HelloServer", h)

The Sun documentation states: "In some DHCP and PPP network configurations
the assigned IP address and hostname do not match the name assigned to the
node. A workaround is to statically and explicitly assign the IP address for
the node." Does that work, and how would I do that?

Do I actually need to have a PPP connection up and running to get this to run???

Thanks,

-DTB

Re: RMI binding bug

1998-11-18 Thread Matt Welsh

The issue here is that the RMI registy is checking that the client's hostname
matches the local hostname on bind() and rebind() calls. In addition the
IP addresses are checked for a match.

The logic is:

InetAddress localhost = InetAddress.getLocalHost();

Class class = Class.forName(new
StringBuffer(String.valueOf(RemoteRef.packagePrefix)).append(".UnicastServerRef").toString());
ServerRef serverRef = (ServerRef)class.newInstance();
String clienthost = serverRef.getClientHost();

InetAddress inetAddress = InetAddress.getByName(clienthost);
if (!inetAddress.equals(localhost) &&
!clienthost.equals(localhost.getHostName()))
  throw new AccessException(string1 + " " + inetAddress + " != " + localhost);

So if the hostname *and* the IP address don't match, an exception is thrown.

A way to test what's going on here would be to write your own simple RMI
service and see what the various values of localhost, clienthost, and their
various 'getHostName()' and 'getByName()' values are.

I want to use Chinese in an application.

(I'm able to read Chiness in Netscape, cxterm and cnprint also work

Just a pointer:

for /etc/hosts (or the equiv in NT (windir)\system32\drivers\etc\hosts)
(assume your I/F IP is 10.12.14.16)

---
127.0.0.1   localhost
10.12.14.16 thehost.mydomain.org   mypc
---

the order is somewhat important
(ip address) (FQDN) (and short or aliases here)

If you don't have a true / valid DNS for (an assumed) you fixed IP address
then and nslookup will fail.

i.e.: (I know it's a bad use of letters with M$ and all. hee hee ;) )

% nslookup
...
> set server (ip.address.of.server <- Not your own machine)
> set type=any
> 16.14.12.10.in-addr.arpa.
  (some error message saying doesn't exist)
   *** DNS.SERVER.whereever.org can't find 16.14.12.10.in-addr.arpa.:
Non-existent host/domain
> exit
%

You will also need to update your /etc/HOSTNAME to match your full name (not
just hostname)

/etc/HOSTNAME---
thehost.mydomain.org
end of /etc/HOSTNAME

You also need to update the IP portion of your OS with the correct host name
% /bin/hostname thehost

You may also need to stop and restart certain services, for example
sendmail: (quick and dirty)
% ps aux | grep sendmail
root73  0.0   5.2 . sendmail: accepting connections
root .. grep sendmail
% kill -9 73
% /usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q15m

If you don't have a FQDN, make one up (I jokingly for example: nodomain.org)
and have a host of myhost.nodomain.org.

As for the Java part I cannot help you there

I have the same problem (both under Linux 2.0.34 /Red Hat 5.1, and Linux

To avoid the setSize() solution, I prefer the dirty solution to switch to
the less appealing FVWM(2) or WindowMaker when testing the application that
uses a JDialog with setResizeable(false)..it works
fine under those window managers.

Hi,

I have an intel-based machine with Linux(slackware 3.3)  installed on a

of JDK(glibc) for linux. I have two questions:

1. When I get to the mirror site
ftp://ce.usu.edu/pub/mirror/linux/JDK/JDK-1.1.7/i386/glibc/v1a/
If you click on several entries such as:
i18n_1.1.7-v1a-glibc-x86.tar.bz2
it tries to read the file in binary format. How are you supposed to
download these files.

2. My internet connnection is on win95. Once I am done with
downloading, I will need to transfer the files to my Linux partition.
Is that gonna cause problems?

Thanks very much for your help

As to win95, it will do some filename adjustment (mangle), but rename it

My Audio Problem was a permission issue: can't setuid .java_wrapper

I would like to post this quick summary of what I have learned:

I had been having problems getting audio to work with java-linux using the
appletviewer
The audio device that java-linux looks for is in fact
/dev/audio

The problem was related to my attempt to setuid to appletviewer
This is really a symbolic link to .java_wrapper
However .java_wrapper is a shell script, and setuid does NOT work on scripts.
(I here there are exceptions for perl?)

For now I've taken the quick and dirty 'Number of the Beast' solution
chmod 666 /dev/audio

I assume the actual files which should be setuid are tucked away in (for 1.1.6
at least)
$JAVA-HOME/jdk1.1.6/bin/$ARCH/green_threads
(for me $JAVA-HOME is /usr/local and $ARCH is i586)

I'm probably exceptionally foolish and ignorant for someone attempting to
administer
his own unix system but perhaps a small section could be added to the FAQ about
permission.

For now, however, all as well and I can concentrate on my work.
Thanks Again,
Chip Grandits

running java setuid root

1998-11-18 Thread Stewart Allen

 I'm having tremendous difficulty finding a flexible way to run
 setuid root java programs. My unique constraint is that I cannot
 add the java lib directory to /etc/ld.so.conf because I have many
 different JVM versions installed. It appears that when the euid is
 0, it ignores LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Platform: i686 RedHat Linux 5.2.

 Help!

If you really are worried about audio device access, you can make a
group and make /dev/audio (and what it links to) 660 and part of that
group. Then you make all of the user accounts that can play audio part
of that group and you have it.

Ahh, but suid does not magically make the program run as such unless
it also makes the calls to do so. Plus, this would be a rather foolish
thing to do since it would mean that all Java programs now are running
as root just so that they can have access to audio.

(Burn down the barn because you don't like the mouse in it...)

Using groups is a much better way (and audio really is not that
critical of a system resource that one would worry about something
getting access to it - having all Java programs running as root would
be...)

Make $$$ For the Holidays

1998-11-18 Thread tcsaba

Are you ready for the Holidays? How about a head start?

NOW would be a GREAT time to get ready for the HOLIDAYS !!

You probably have received this in the past and done nothing about it, then
wondered about it. It really does work. All you need is to invest some
time and effort into this, but the pay off can be great. I received this
letter late last year, put little effort onto it and got moderate results.
The system does work!! I am starting this again for the upcoming holiday
season. This is a ground floor opportunity!!

This could possible be the best HOLIDAY SEASON ever!!

Never Thought I'd be the One Telling You This:

I Actually Read a Piece of E-Mail & I'm Going to Europe on the Proceeds!

Hello!

My name is Karen Liddell; I'm a 35-year-old mom, wife, and part-time
accountant. As a rule, I delete all unsolicited "junk" e-mail and use my
account primarily for business. I received what I assumed was this same
e-mail countless times and deleted it each time.

About two months ago I received it again and, because of the catchy subject
line, I finally read it. Afterwards, I thought, "OK, I give in, I'm going
to try this. I can certainly afford to invest $20 and, on the other hand,
there's nothing wrong with earning a little extra cash." I promptly mailed
four $5 bills and, after receiving the reports, paid a friend of mine a small
fee to send out some e-mail advertisements for me. After reading the
reports, I also learned how easy it is to bulk e-mail for free!

I was not prepared for the results. Everyday for the last six weeks, my P.O.
box has been overflowing with $5 bills; many days the excess fills up an
extra mail bin and I've had to upgrade to the corporate-size box! I am
stunned by all the money that keeps rolling in!

My husband and I have been saving for several years to make a substantial
Down payment on a house. Now, not only are we purchasing a house with 40%
down, we're going to Venice, Italy to celebrate!

I promise you, if you follow the directions in this e-mail and be prepared to set
aside about an hour each day to follow up (and count your money!), you will make at
least as much money as we did. You don't need to
be a whiz at the computer, but I'll bet you already are. If you can open an
envelope, remove the money, and send an e-mail message, then you're on your
way to the bank. Take the time to read this so you'll understand how easy it
is. If I can do this, so can you!

   GO FOR IT NOW!!

   Karen Liddell

The following is a copy of the e-mail I read:

$

This is a. LEGAL, MONEY-MAKING PHENOMENON.
