Q:'Fonts not found' and coredump on 1.1.7

1999-04-25 Thread Dima Ulberg

Hi,

Most probably I missed this discussion, but I could not find any
references in the mail archive.

I am running JDK 1.1.7 on RH5.2 with AcceleratedX 5.0. As soon as I
try to run AWT based program, I got coredump with the following
messages:

What?!?!?! Is that a "real" program? That is, with method invokations and
stuff, and not just a calculation benchmark?

If so, than I seem to have a problem. My test would suggest that JDK 1.2 is
usually as fast, or slower than 1.1.7. Am I alone in this respect? Do everyone
else get superious performance out of 1.2?

PS.
Your questions about memory footprint. I don't know if it's
supposed to be that way, but I'm sure seeing the same thing
over here.

Getting a frames X window handle

1999-04-25 Thread Michael Hope

Hi. Ive written a small native interface that searches for a window given
it's name, and then sets the MWM and Gnome hints on that window (ie stay
on top, hide close button etc) Unfortunatly the search process is quite
slow - can anyone recommend a nice way to get ahold of the window
handle
directly?

Thanks,

-- Michael

"Directly" meaning to ask the X server to find a window by name?

I don't think so. You might want to track down the source to xwininfo (a
standard X client -- should be in XFree86 distributions) to see how it
finds a window by name, but I think it searches... and it doesn't take
very long. The named windows are grandchildren of the root window, so
you don't need to search very deeply.

I meant getting the window handle directly from the innards of Java. The
current program has some code ripped directly from xprop which searches by
name, but it takes a good 3-4 sec on a remote X server.

Something like that!
For anyone who is interested in trying it, take it from
http://www.flex.ro/iute.java

I have to repeat , IT IS NOT EVEN AN AMATEUR BENCHMARK PROGRAM!!!

It makes 10.000 loops calling only one method that make some string,
hashtable and math operations.
I used to test JDK 1.1.7 speed on Windows against Linux. Don't expect to
something interesting.
But JDK 1.2 finished the program 3 times faster than JDK 1.1.7 so , this
does mean something, isn't it?
Something goes faster deep inside ... :-)
If you want to check also garbage collection speed, uncomment
System.gc() at the end of the loop.

Best regards,
