Hi Peter,

thanks for your advice. After trying several versions, I finally found one
that works for me. It's jdk-1.1.7v3 for glibc...

How's possible that only certain versions work ok and other don't work??
Library (glibc versions) problems?? JDK problems??

Best regards,

I may be somewhat synical. But put your money where your mouth is! You talk
the talk but can you walk the walk? :)

Everyone is saying stuff like 'we are going to OSS X application'. They are
doing this for marketing. What they really need to do is say that Java *will*
become Free Software (not Open Source) and here is the date.

I am not sure I even want SUNs help in the Free Software/Java community. They
have screwed a lot of thigns up. I would just rather see Kaffe/GJC/Classpath go
their logical directions and not have SUN involved. If they want to make Java
Free Software then good but I don't think the community should hold their breath.

Kevin

[OT]WEB PAGE DESIGN PROBLEM

2000-10-25 Thread Ted Hilts

First, I apologise if this off topic subject causes a problem for
anyone.

I'm polling all the lists to which I belong in the hopes there is
someone who has an answer to my problem.

I need to provide on a served web page dozens of URL anchors that when
clicked result in a quarter screen mini web page which overlays part of
the web page containing the anchor URL that was clicked. Therefore, the
original web page remains intact. Frames does not appear to be the
answer because it appears I can only have 2 frames on a web page and I
cannot dedicate an entire slice of the web page to a frame that may not
get used. This feature has to work on both MS Internet Explorer as well
as Netscape Communicator/Navigator. BTW. Every now and then when running
Navigator such a screen slowly appears and fills with advertising but
this does not appear to work with MS Internet Explorer and I have not
been able to pin down the situation that gives rise to the quarter
screen box.

Think of the problem as a web page containing text where specially
marked text requires an explanation/definition so that when this
specially marked text is clicked up comes the quarter screen box with
the explanatory information or definition. The box can be left there,
dragged to a differen't spot on the screen, or disposed off. Several
such boxes may be required on the screen at the same time.

I'm looking for a simple and fast way of this happenning. The content
of the box would be another web page provided by the web page server in
response to clicking on the specially marked text.

I suspect that some kind of embedded script within the HTML is required
but am hoping that I have missed something obvious about HTML such as
being able to bring up a sized web page (sized smaller than the first
web page) on top of the first web page.

Hope this off topic is not much of a bother to the uninterested.

Bye-thanks_TED

Re: [OT]WEB PAGE DESIGN PROBLEM

2000-10-25 Thread Christopher Hinds

Yes this is very off topic.
However I will try to answer you anyway.
It sounds like what you are trying to do will require using advanced CSS1(
Cascading Style Sheets 1) positioning
with DHTML( Dynamic HTML ). I think using IE IFRAMES or NAV Layers will do
the trick.

Cheers
Chris
