Have a look at www.rethad.com and follow the link to the support
forums. They have a forum for new users and a forum on X configuration.
They also have extensive installation documentation that comes with the
CD.

JDK1.1.8+RedHat 7.0 crashes

2001-09-05 Thread Ripalda-Marin, Miguel-Angel

Hello everybody,

I have browsed through blackdown.org and the README.linux file, and haven't
found any clues to my problem. It looks like follows:
.- My linux box is a Pentium Celeron with Linux RedHat 7.0 (Kernel
2.2.16-22).
.- I have downloaded JDK1.1.8V3 from Blackdown.org and installed it at
/usr/local/jdk118 (installation process as root), have executed ldconfig and
then logout.
.- I have set my environment (PATH and CLASSPATH) and then executed java
-version at the command line, everything seems ok (returns 'java version
"1.1.8"')... but then I try to execute 'javac Dummy.class' (code for Dummy
looks like it sounds) and get a beatiful core whose output is included at
'output.txt' file.

The configuration for the libraries at my linux box is inside 'libs.txt'...
I have tried to remove the
/usr/local/jdk118/lib/i386/green_threads/linuxlibs/libc.so.* and libdl.so.*
files but they are not found... ah, and of course, I think that my system is
glibc-based, since I have /lib/libc.so.6->libc-2.1.92.so and
/lib/libdl.so..2->libc.2.1.92.so

I have tried also with JDK1.1.7V3 but that doesn't work... and I really need
to work with JDK1.1.8...

Yes this is a known issue with RedHat 7.1 & maybe others.

The workaround is this:

1. add this to your $JAVA_HOME/bin/.java_wrapper
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

2. 1. Create a symbolic link from /bin/cut to /usr/bin/cut
ln -s /bin/cut /usr/bin/cut

Re: System.getProperty("file.encoding") = 646

2001-09-05 Thread Peter Eddy

As of Solaris 2.7 (I think) the value, "646" represents the C/POSIX
locale. If this is causing a problem, you might try setting the locale
explicitly via the LANG and/or LC_ALL environment variables.

RV: JDK1.1.8+RedHat 7.0 crashes

2001-09-05 Thread Ripalda-Marin, Miguel-Angel

Hi,

I'm using glibc 2.1.92-14... is it really necessary to do that? I have tried
with jdk1.1.6, jdk1.1.7, jdk1.1.8v1 and jdk1.1.8v3... mmm, jdk1.1.8 prt by
IBM works OK, but I would really like to use Blackdown, because IBM's one
has some features that don't fit well in my requirements...

Also, you can find user groups with helpful, knowledgeable users in many
cities. They will be better at getting you started as a Linux user than
the Blackdown mailing list.

Re: linux installed now what

2001-09-05 Thread ed phillips

Vijay,

There are many forums that deal with the basics of Linux install
and administration. Unfortunately, this is not one of them.
You should do some homework first before you get to specific Java on
Linux questions.

Try typing "install Linux how to" in google.

Happy homework,

Ed
