How is Javasoft's JDK different from Blackdown's?

2001-02-15 Thread Andy

Which is more reliable and if Javasoft's
is what are the implications for the
Blackdown project?

glibc2/jdk1.1.5v7

1998-05-12 Thread Andy Stubbs

OK... obviously I've not got them working together, so before I launch
into full diagnostics: I notice on the website that glibc-2.0.7-7 is the
redhat package recommended. Now, not being an rpm type, I only have 2.0.6
(this is the latest one I can *find*) which I compiled myself... So my
question is, _could_ this be the reason for the segfaulting?

Brief description: sounds a bit like what our friend Travis Shirk was
going through; i.e., "java Class" segfaults, as does "javac". I've done a
fair amount of tweaking and diagnostic work which I can post if anyone
cares...

I'd appreciate any hints/clues/suggestions

As it happens, it isn't actually there; it's in the updates directory for
RH 5.0. BUT... I can't work out why jdk1.1.5 is linked against a version
of glibc2 which doesn't appear to exist in anything other than .rpm format
and isn't even at the gnu ftp site. This is something of a mystery to me.
I guess if I want this thing to work I'm going to either have to find a
rpm depackager thingy and try to botch the result into the system
somewhere without breaking anything, or give up and get libc5.4.44...
which defeats the whole point somewhat.

is a .tgz available _anywhere_ (archie thinks not)?

I don't normally post "me too"s, but this is gonna be the exception to the
rule. Me Too.

I've finally got it working. I grabbed the "rpm" thingies from redhat and
the source rpm and compiled libc-2.0.7-7 to my own taste... Sounds simple
doesn't it? Deceptively so.

Big Thanks to everyone who emailed me - I never suspected I'd generate
quite so much traffic on this one,

Andy

RedHat 6, JDK 1.2. native threads & JNI

1999-06-02 Thread Andy Levine

It seems the consensus "solution" for running the 1.2 JDK under RH6 is to be
SURE you are running green threads (in addition to disabling the JIT). All
the associated comments seem to echo "RH6 doesn't support native threads".
What does this REALLY mean ?

Does this mean that pthread support is missing in RH6, or that the JVM when
compiled using the native thread option just doesn't work ? Where is the
limitation...RH or Java ? Is this a temporary situation, or will native
threads NEVER work ? If the latter is true, this poses HUGE problems. Case
in point- JNI. According to the 1.2 pre-release notes you should use the
native threads VM if you are going to use JNI with pthread code. How will
this be possible ?

I am in a situation where I am porting a product from Win32 to LINUX where
we had embedded the VM within our code. Before I get on TOO far, I want to
be sure that I am not going to be dead ended. I am still running RH5.2 and
was going to upgrade this weekend before I started reading about all these
issues.

Thanks
Andy Levine

Jar problem with jdk1.1.8 from IBM

1999-11-17 Thread Andy Choi

Have anyone tried the Jar utility from IBM's jdk1.1.8? For some reason,
it refuse to jar up some inner class for me. The class files are
generated by jikes and the jar utility from blackdown's 1.1.7 works fine
with them. Any idea?

Thanks,
Andy

problem with Swing in JDK1.2

1999-11-17 Thread Andy Choi

I have a GUI application which make extensive use of the Swing library
and works fine under jdk1.1.x and Swing 1.1.1 (from Sun).

However, if i tried to compile and run the same java file with
jdk1.2-pre2 from blackdown, non of the images, or textfiled, or whatever
shows up. All i can see is a gray area appearing on the screen.

Any hint would be much appreciated.

thanks,
Andy

1999-11-29 Thread Andy Choi

Hi all,

I have got a problem using native thread and hotspot with rc2. When i
try to run java, it would gives me the following messages.

/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/bin/i386/native_threads/java: error in loading
shared libraries:
/usr/local/jdk1.2.2/jre/lib/i386/native_threads/libhpi.so: symbol
sem_init, version GLIBC_2.1 not defined in file libpthread.so.0 with
link time reference

However, Green Thread works fine.

My System is a RedHat 6.0/glibc 2.1, with kernel 2.2.13.

I think that announcement has been postponed.

Re: I have a doubt...

1999-12-15 Thread Andy Choi

I also noticed that upon upgrading to glibc-2.1.2 (which is required by RC3) and
installing RC3. The jdk1.1.8 from ibm would give a SIGSEGV when trying to open
Socket to an non-existence host.

For example,

Socket sock = new Socket ("somehost", someport)

would give a core dump if "somehost" does not exists.

Is this a glibc problem? Has anybody encountered this as well?

thanks,
Andy

UNIX/Linux commands w/i Java

2001-06-14 Thread Priestley, Andy

Hello Everyone!

I'm new to this mailing list and am looking quite forward to conversing w/ you all.

I'm attempting to put UNIX commands w/i in my Java code. A simple example of this
would be to change directories on the UNIX box and look for files w/ a given
extension. I'm having a difficult time locating documentation on how to do this, and
more complex forms of the same idea. Do any of you have any experience in this area or
can point me to some documentation our online source code that does similar tasks. I'd
be ver grateful. Thanks for your help.

Andy Priestley
