Re: Java Web Server1.1 on Linux

1998-10-30 Thread Joel Shellman

I am just attempting to set up the JWS on Linux. I noticed there is
already a thread about it and so I thought I'd jump in and ask the same
question because it isn't working for me either.

I'm using Redhat 5.1.

If I try to run that diff patch, it doesn't find the file
startup_wrapper. After running the patch, running the:
cd native; make -f Makefile.lnx install

results in the error:
Makefile.lnx:45: *** missing separator. Stop.

I did go in and do the diffs by hand on the Makefile, but then I got
errors during the make because the other diffs didn't work on the other
.c files.

Also, nearly all the Hunks fail in the patch process.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Getting applets to run on Netscape 4.06

1998-10-31 Thread Joel Shellman

I'm running Redhat 5.1, KDE 1.0 and Netscape 4.06 with JDK1.1.6v5.

I get the following error when trying to access an applet:

"
Warning: JIT compiler "jit" not found. Will use interpreter.
Could not get localized resources:
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: native method
java/util/ResourceBundle.getClassContext not found: : undefined symbol:

What's going on? How can I fix this?

Thank you,

Re: Java and 3D.

1998-11-19 Thread Joel Shellman

Related question. Does anyone know how or if there is a way to use the
Java 3D kit on Linux? I tried to download it but realized it was an
executable and therefore not runnable on linux.

Thank you,

That kind of clause is quite standard in pre-release hardware/software
where it is distributed to a limited audience before being released. The
reason being that because it is "not done yet" any benchmarks would not
necessarily reflect the finished product.

1.2 has been released, though, so... I'm not sure. Maybe they forgot to
take it out.

Signal 11 from TYA?

1999-01-26 Thread Joel Shellman

I'm running apache 1.3.4 on Redhat 5.1 with JServ 1.0b2,
JDK1.1.7v1a and TYA1.2v3 and getting the following error in
the apache error log file:

E0608 Unexpected result from mutex.4
TYA:Signal 11 in doWork

Anyone know what could cause this? It was running just fine
before (on a solaris box).

Re: Offering help on 1.2.

1999-02-02 Thread Joel Shellman

I realize this is off-topic and off-list, but I have tried
twice to email Rob Schoening privately and both times the
email bounced. And the fact is I'm rather desparate.

I saw Rob's post regarding Java on the BeOS and it renewed
my hopes. Is there any Java port for the BeOS? I don't care
what version, is there a JVM at all for the BeOS available
and where?

Thank you and of course, please reply privately as this is
not on-topic for the list.

First of all, let's try to take this off this list. I'm
posting again so I can redirect any further correspondence
to a new location.

Thank you for telling me. Look, if there is an effort, let's
get it organized. I'll gladly set up a web site and mailing
list for the effort. If anyone knows if there already is
such a thing, please tell me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Otherwise
in two days, if I do not hear that there is already an
organized effort somewhere, I'll put up a site at the
following url to get started:

http://beos.knOcean.com/

Look for it on Thursday (perhaps earlier).

Considering I've done several searches on a couple search
engines and couldn't find anything about it... I don't know
if there is any other website about it.

Also, one more note--Rob, I responded to your private email
(thank you) but it still could not be delivered. What's up
with your email address?

Re: IBM to deploy LinuxPPC on RS6000 servers...

1999-02-10 Thread Joel Shellman

Speaking of LinuxPPC:

I have been trying to get my hands on a LinuxPPC CD. Does
anyone know where I can get one? I've tried to contact
www.linuxppc.com but received not reply.

If anyone know where I could get one locally (Provo, Utah,
USA), that would be even better. Thanks!

And to make this on-topic... Does anyone know of any special
considerations about getting Java, Apache, and Apache-JServ
running on LinuxPPC?

I think I might second this--I like Linux and all, but I'm starting to
discover various problems with it (well, everything has problems I
suppose...)

I don't believe you're being fair to applets with that last sentence.
Just because so many people create completely worthless applets doesn't
mean it isn't being used in a good way somewhere--like corporate
Intranets that you probably haven't seen.

Wierd. This is my biggest (only?) complaint against Java is the very
slow GUI it runs. I run Java servlets and they do wonderfully. But
running a GUI written in Java? No thanks... too slow.

Amen.

I would certainly like to see some benchmarks comparing speed of C/C++
written FastCGI verses Java servlets (with a good JIT). I'm pretty sure
servlets outrun anything else, just wondering how it compares there.

And... I recently moved our web sites and clients from Solaris to Linux
boxes. One of our services is written in Java servlets. The move was a
total breeze (tar--ftp--untar). One of our clients had some C++ CGI
programs. It was a week or two before all the problems were ironed out.
Still trying to recompile some of them.

I don't think you read the question properly. The point wasn't that they
were getting it out sooner, but that they were publishing what was
termed a "almost" ready version--which should not be distributable
according to the license--the very reason we don't have access to the
Linux JDK1.2 port yet.

Unless of course, "almost" ready means it passes all the JCK but still
isn't finished?

One thing you might take into consideration, vcafe for java supposedly
has one of the fastest JITs available. That might not be fair to compare
with.
