Call for Volunteers

1998-09-06 Thread Karl Asha

 C A L L F O R V O L U N T E E R S!
 --

The BlackDown Java-Linux (http://www.blackdown.org/java-linut.html) JDK
porting effort needs your help to improve the Linux ports of Sun's Java
Development Kit. We have needs for volunteers in all areas and for all
flavors of Linux (x86, Sparc, PowerPC and Alpha) to help reinvigorate the
ports.

If you have any skills in C programming, java programming, Motif widget
sets, LessTif, X11, signal handlers, user-based threading, kernel-based
threading, cgi programming, automated regression testing, or bug eradication,
we would love to have you join our team!

The entire porting effort is done under Sun's non-commercial source license
(http://www.javasoft.com/nav/business/license_dl.html) which has basically
4 restrictions.
   1. you may not give the source code to anyone
   2. you may not make any money from your porting effort
   3. ports are restricted to non-Sun supported platforms
   4. diffs can be release/shared

Please read the source license available in pdf or ps versions from the
link given above for complete details and judge for yourself!

By the way, if you haven't used the BlackDown Linux JDK in a while, please
check it out again. We have made significant progress recently and have
just released JDK 1.1.6 v4 which fixes many bugs including some that
resulted in poor performance on the Volano Mark 1.0 tests. There is a
mailing list, jitterbug bug database, and links to java tools, swing 1.0.3,
HotJava Browser 1.1.4, JIT compilers, IDE's such as FreeBuilder, NetBeans,
and Simplicity, etc.

If you are interested in joining our effort to help make the Blackdown JDK
port, the best way for developers to develop their Java applications,
please contact
Karl Asha ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) directly or make a posting to our open
mailing list at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks,
The Java-Linux Porting Team

[ANNOUNCE]: JDK-1.1.6v4a

1998-09-06 Thread Karl Asha

NOTE: The JDK may take a few hours to appear on the mirror sites. Please
  be patient.

Announcing: Java Development Kit 1.1.6 Version 4a for Linux
---

Your Blackdown Linux JDK porting team is pleased to announce
its Version 4a port of Sun's Java Development Kit 1.1.6 for
Linux x86.

New in this Release
---
* This is our v4a port of Sun's JDK 1.1.6 final.
- fix for removes from choice list (a Sun bug)
- new fix for set frames non-resizable
- fix for mwm based window manager frame positioning
- fix for disappearing frames problem (a Sun bug)
- fix for open sockets causing poor GUI performance
- fix for kernel accept() bug, which caused slow Java Web Server
 - turn-off by: export JDK_NO_KERNEL_FIX=true
- improvements in Russian font properties
- fix for CET to be Central European Time
- fix for Button 1 modifier values
and many many more fixes since Version 2

You can find a download site via http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux.html
"Download the JDK for Linux" link.

**Other Notes**

- Most, if not all, troubles with the JDK seg-faulting or
aborting on Linux x86 are really the result of old/incompatible
sets of shared libraries being used. If you run into these
troubles, please check out the FAQ available from:
http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux.html

- The libc5 version of jdk116_v4a was built on a Debian 1.3.1
machine running Motif 2.0.1 with gcc-2.8.1, and the glibc
version was built on a RedHat 5.0 machine running SWiM
Motif 2.1 with egcs-2.91.41.

- Some problems with Motif and TextFields can be worked around
by pre-Loading libBrokenlocale.so before invoking java. See
the Blackdown Java-Linux Mailing list archive for more info

- Please check out the README.linux release notes. For help,
see the FAQ and the Java-Linux mailing list:
mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

- Please report all bugs to the Jitterbug Java-Linux Bug
Database at: http://www.blackdown.org/java-linux.html

Thanks especially go to:

Long story. So far as the jdbc list goes, it needs to find a new home
basically, I'm cutting down on the number of lists I house at the site

Re: Need a Java/Linux RedHat 5.0 configuration where getLocalHost works

1998-06-17 Thread Karl Asha

The answer is pretty simple. The JDK finds out its information using
gethostname(). This information is something that's been previously
set at system boot up with the sethostname syscall. The problem isn't really
the jdk, it's how your system is setup. If you type 'hostname' on the command
line, and you get localhost, that's what java's getLocalHost() is gonna
give you too. You need to look into having your machine setup correctly,
and that usually revolves around a properly setup /etc/hosts.

That's pretty much the extent of getLocalhost()...it does a gethostname,
a gethostbyname to pull up the full host/domain, and then a gethostbyaddr
to provide you the address.

Hope this helps out,
Cheers,
Karl Asha

[ATTENTION]: Mailing List Changes

1999-01-10 Thread Karl Asha

I'd like to do one of two things with this mailing list, as it's really
become a significant amount of traffic. Either move it to a newsgroup,
or move it to a place willing to host the java-linux and java-linux-digest
lists. The world unfortunately isn't a place of free bandwidth forever
and I have to make some decisions.

Now my main request is for someone to hold my hand through getting a
newsgroup proposed and possibly approved. Alternatively, I would really
appreciate a -stable- (and by stable I mean someplace that isn't going to
die within a week) to host the mailing lists.

If you can help with either of these, please let me know. As a side note,
this isn't the start of a massive move of the site or anything else. The
only issue is the mailing list, which is just a constant bandwidth and
i/o load on the machine.

Thanks,
Karl Asha

My response to this email is pre-sorting out of the blackdown

source but specifically cvs access to the blackdown port. I will take
this up directly with Jørn in order to get him setup with the
blackdown porting group.

Re: Problems installing Java plugin - sharkive broken?

2000-03-24 Thread Karl Asha

Seems a lot of people have managed to download the plugin in ascii
mode. It needs to be explicitly downloaded in binary mode. The version
at ftp.tux.org is correct. That site is actually the central mirror
repository.

Cheers,
Karl

You'll want the FCS. THat's the final release. RC* are release
candidates.

Mailing list changes

2002-07-03 Thread Karl Asha

Due to spam complaints from my provider that
originated from this mailing list, I have enabled the restriction that posting
to this list requires you to be subscribed to the list. What this means to you is that if the email address you subscribed with
does not match the email address you post to this list with, your message will
not get through. The spam complaint against [EMAIL PROTECTED]
originated from a user subscribed to this list.

If this measure does not solve the problem, I will
no longer host this list at blackdown.org. Controlling spam will not become my
second day job.

Thanks,
Karl Asha

Its still in the mailinglist archives :)

I'm waiting for it too.

I asked myself the same question.
I reckon people are just working hard on the code ?

Maybe someone from the core team can comment ?

thanks

OK. Sat, 27 Jul 2002 13:09:50 -0700:

Currently the SDK and the Runtime Environment are available as
self-extracting .tar.bz2 files only, however Debian packages should be
available soon.

Actually, I need it for running an XML Editor

Which would be fine :)

I am very interested in this. I did build the blackdown java 1.1.4 i
think,
some many years ago. At that time the patches were more available. I
understand there are good reasons for the current policy and have no
dispute
with that.

But now i would like (need) to have an up to date sparc version, as the
java
sdk is used for porting openoffice.org (also from sun). As sun do not
provide a sparc linux port of java, then I need a sun java sparc port from
blackdown to build the sparc port of sun openoffice.org on sun hardware,
(yes!)

I am willing and eager to help, so please inform the list (or if necessary
privately) when you have a final answer on how the diffs may be obtained.
I supprt the blackdown team and respect their rights to decide how they
handle this, but it would just be useful to know if it is possible and how
one may help.
many thanks
jim
