There commands can be accessed in the run dialog, right? If not, from
 where?

 101 useful Run Commands

Guys do you use the Run feature in WINDOWS XP? For most, this feature
remains unused (or rarely used). Why is that? Well, First off nearly
 all of
 the Run
Commands Correspond to a particular Control Panel Item or a Utility,
 Tool or
Task that can be accessed through W*NDOW$. There are, however, tools
 and utilities
that I bet you never knew you had that can be accessed through the
Run feature. The main reason most people don't use the Run feature
 is because they don't
know the Commands. So, to solve that problem, I decided to put
 together the
following listing, which lists 101 Run Commands and what they
 correspond too...

[JAWS-Users] using windows easy transfer

Introduction
When purchasing a new computer one of the most frustrating experiences is
moving existing data to the new computer from the older one. In the past
when
you wanted to transfer data you had to copy the data via a network, store it
onto a DVD/CD/Floppy and then copy it back onto the new PC, or physically
take the hard drive out of the old machine and install it into the new
machine. The main problem using these methods was that you could only move
files
such as documents, pictures, movies, saved games, etc. E-mail could be moved
but was a difficult a process. Moving settings and program configurations,
on the other hand, was not possible, except for the experts, and you had to
reconfigure each of the applications on the new computer. Windows Vista
changes
all this with a new bundled application called Windows Easy Transfer that
can easily migrate data from Windows XP SP2, Windows 2004 SP4, and Windows
Vista
operating systems.

Windows Easy Transfer is a program that comes bundled with Windows Vista,
and when run, scans our computer for
data and settings
that you can transfer to your new computer. This migration can be done via a
myriad of methods including USB flash drives, DVDs, a network, or by using
a new product called a
Vista Easy Transfer Cable.
What makes this program so powerful and easy to use is that it is wizard
driven so you just answer questions, make sure all of your data was properly
selected,
and then press a button to start the transfer. For this tutorial, we will
focus primarily on migrating our data using the
Vista Easy Transfer Cable
or via a network. We chose these two methods as they are the easiest and
quickest methods to transfer your data.

The types of data can be transferred

Using Windows Easy Transfer you can migrate most files and program settings.
Below is a table describing the types of data and settings that can be
moved.

Table with 2 columns and 7 rows
Data Type
Specifics
Files and Folders
Any files found in your My Documents, My Pictures, and Shared Documents
folder will be selected to be moved automatically. You can also add other
documents
that are in other locations.
E-mail messages and Settings
E-mail messages, contacts, account settings, and address books from Outlook
Express, Outlook, Windows Mail, and other programs.
Program Settings
Programs that are compatible with Vista will have their settings transferred
to the new computer. In order for this properly to work the program must
already
be installed on the Vista computer.
User Settings
Desktop settings, color settings, screen savers, fonts, Windows options,
printers,
etc.
Internet Settings
Favorites, cookies, and Internet Explorer settings.
Pictures, Video, and Music
Music files, playlists, and album are. Pictures (gif, jpg, bmp files) and
personal videos.
table end

Preparing the computers to use Windows Easy Transfer

Before you use Windows Easy Transfer on your older computer you first need
to install the software. The three methods that can be used to install
Windows
Easy Transfer on the old computer are:
List of 3 items
. The Windows Vista DVD

. A CD that comes with an Easy Transfer Cable

. Media that we create via the Windows Easy Transfer program in Windows
Vista.
list end

The two easiest methods are to use the Windows Vista DVD to install the
program. To install the software off of the Vista DVD just insert it into
the old
computer and when the setup menu appears click on the Transfer files and
settings from another computer option. If we have autorun disabled then open
the
DVD and double-click on the setup.exe program. The setup screen is shown
below.

Vista DVD Setup Screen
Figure 1. Vista DVD setup screen

If you purchased a
Vista Easy Transfer Cable
then insert the CD that came with it into the old machine and install the
software. If these two options are not available then follow the
instructions
below in order to create installation media using the Vista's Windows Easy
Transfer program.

The following instructions should be performed on our new Vista computer.
List of 11 items (contains 1 nested list)
1. Click on the Start button.

2. Click on the All Programs menu option.

3. Click on Accessories

4. Click on System tools

5. Click on the Windows Easy Transfer icon.

6. When Windows Easy Transfer starts, click on the Start a new transfer
option

7. At the next screen you should click on the My New Computer option.

8. When it asks if we have an easy transfer cable, click on the option
labeled No, show me

[JAWS-Users] office 2007 for Victor

2007-01-26 Thread David Ferrin

Our man Ray has been a busy fellow. Never the less Victor might find this
of interest.
David Ferrin
***
Hi Dave
Victor has posted that he is having problems with Word 2007 but from what I
have read he is using Jaws 7 and he should be using Jaws 8.
Anyhow here is what the New Features are with Jaws 8 using Word 2007.
Special Characters in Microsoft Word

JAWS now recognizes the following special characters in Microsoft Word:
. Soft hyphen - Press CTRL+HYPHEN to insert a soft hyphen.
. Non-breaking hyphen - Press CTRL+SHIFT+HYPHEN to insert a non-breaking
hyphen.
. Non-breaking space - Press CTRL+SHIFT+SPACE to insert a non-breaking
space.

Table Description in Microsoft Word

JAWS 8.0 can detect the color pattern and shading of table cells in
Microsoft Word. For example, if a cell is 50 percent shaded with a clear
background,
JAWS will announce, Gray 50 percent shaded on clear pattern background.
Table description is on by default. Note: This functionality is not
currently
available in Word 2007.

Press INSERT+TAB if you want JAWS to repeat the cell description.

To disable table description, do the following:
List of 4 items
1. Open a Word document.
2. Press INSERT+V to open the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.
3. Use the ARROW keys to select Table Description, and press SPACEBAR to
turn off this item.
4. Close the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.

Reading Tables in Microsoft Word

The following JAWS keystrokes, used for HTML tables on Web pages, can now be
used with Word tables:
. Say Next Row - WINDOW Key+DOWN ARROW.
. Say Prior Row - WINDOW Key+UP ARROW.
. Read Current Row - WINDOWS Key+5.
. Read Current Row - WINDOWS Key+COMMA.
. Read Current Column - WINDOWS Key+PERIOD.
. Say Next Column - WINDOWS Key+RIGHT ARROW.
. Say Prior Column - WINDOWS Key+LEFT ARROW.

An error message is announced if a key is pressed while not in a table.

JAWS always announces if the keystroke is entered while in the first or last
row of the table.

Bullet Type Indication in Microsoft Word

JAWS can now read an outline-style list that contains bullets rather than
numerals. For example, if a Word document contains an outline list that uses
different
bullet styles, JAWS announces these shapes as filled-round bullet,
hollow-round bullet, star bullet, and so on. Bullet Type Indication is on by
default.

To disable bullet type indication, do the following:
1. Open a Word document.
2. Press INSERT+V to open the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.
3. Use the ARROW keys to select Bullet type indication, and press SPACEBAR
to turn off this item.
4. Close the Adjust JAWS Verbosity dialog.

Reading Footnotes, Endnotes, and Comments in Microsoft Word

When you turn on the Comments, Footnotes, Endnotes verbosity option,
JAWS now detects the presence of footnotes, endnotes, and comments even when
performing
the Say All command.

If you want JAWS to announce the contents of a footnote or endnote in a Word
document, do the following:
1. Open a Word document.
2. Place the cursor on the footnote or endnote reference.
3. Press ALT+SHIFT+E. JAWS reads the footnote or endnote.

If you want JAWS to announce the contents of a comment, do the following:
1. Open a Word document.
2. Place the cursor on the comment reference.
3. Press CTRL+ALT+APOSTROPHE. JAWS reads the comment.
I do not know whether this will help him or not.
What do you think.
He might have to buy Jaws 8.

[JAWS-Users] Progress Bar Announcements in J 7.0 OE

2007-01-26 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi All,

I'm still trying to set up JAWS 7.0 to my liking and JFW is still
announcing the percentage of downloaded mail when I do a Control-M in
Outlook Express and progress bar announcement updates is set at off in
outlook express 5-6.jcf - JAWS Configuration Manager. I have cable,
so it's rather annoying and JFW 6.2 didn't announce the progress with
announcements set at 5 second intervals. I tried setting them at 5
second intervals in 7.0, but it didn't help. JAWS often announces 100
% twice just to be sure I might not have gotten it the first time.

I looked at the Technical Service Bulletins for OE at the FS site
and there weren't any related to the problem.

I have XP Home with SP2 and it's OE 6 and IE6. I haven't tried
changing the setting in the default.jcf - JAWS Configuration Manager
since there might be a program where I might want announcements. Has
anyone experienced a similar problem or am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Margaret

Subject: [JAWS-Users] office 2007 for Victor

Our man Ray has been a busy fellow. Never the less Victor might find this
 of interest.
 David Ferrin
 ***
 Hi Dave
Victor has posted that he is having problems with Word 2007 but from what
 I
have read he is using Jaws 7 and he should be using Jaws 8.

The following JAWS keystrokes, used for HTML tables on Web pages, can now
 be
 used with Word tables:
. Say Next Row - WINDOW Key+DOWN ARROW.
. Say Prior Row - WINDOW Key+UP ARROW.
 . Read Current Row - WINDOWS Key+5.
 . Read Current Row - WINDOWS Key+COMMA.
 . Read Current Column - WINDOWS Key+PERIOD.
. Say Next Column - WINDOWS Key+RIGHT ARROW.
. Say Prior Column - WINDOWS Key+LEFT ARROW.

An error message is announced if a key is pressed while not in a table.

JAWS always announces if the keystroke is entered while in the first or
 last
 row of the table.

Bullet Type Indication in Microsoft Word

JAWS can now read an outline-style list that contains bullets rather than
numerals. For example, if a Word document contains an outline list that
 uses
 different
bullet styles, JAWS announces these shapes as filled-round bullet,
hollow-round bullet, star bullet, and so on. Bullet Type Indication is on
 by

When you turn on the Comments, Footnotes, Endnotes verbosity option,
JAWS now detects the presence of footnotes, endnotes, and comments even
 when
 performing
 the Say All command.

If you want JAWS to announce the contents of a footnote or endnote in a
 Word
 document, do the following:

The setup screen is shown
below.

[JAWS-Users] Re: question about reading attributes

2007-01-26 Thread Ray Boyce

Hi Sharon
Here is a learning module on Formatting a Document
It explains quite a lot..
Please everyone do not get upset about this post as I am only trying to
help.
This learning module is entitled, Formatting a Document. This lesson
demonstrates several formatting options available in the HJPad program, as
well as
techniques of locating and identifying text with specific format attributes.

Currently, the only two programs that I've got running are JAWS for Windows
and HJPad. My application focus is in the HJPad application. Let's open a
document
to work with.

Ctrl+O
c:\jaws451\training\enu\format.txt

Good, we're in the document with the insertion point at the upper left-hand
corner of a document that I have opened called, Format.txt. The Format.txt
document is a letter that we wrote to our lead trainer, Dan Clark. The
primary focus of this lesson is going to be on formatting a document.

The whole idea behind having a prepared document like this one for you to
work in is to show you how easy it is for you to go back after you've gotten
all
of your ideas typed up, and then carry out your formatting to make your
document look more professional or academic, whatever applies to your
situation.
As we format this document, I'll be showing you some techniques to verify
that a particular formatting action has been carried out. And finally, we'll
be taking a look at several options that JAWS has built into it that will
allow us to proof our document for content, format attributes, or both. I'm
going
to press the say all command and have JAWS read a little bit of the document
that we've got up on the screen, and then I'm going to press the CTRL key
to silence speech. I'll press INSERT+DOWN ARROW now

Rover Red. One hundred eleven any street. My town comma, my state, zero,
zero, zero, zero, zero dash zero, zero, zero, zero. Freedom Scientific BLV
Group
comma LLC period. Eleven thousand eight hundred thirty-one S-T Court end
period. S-t period. Petersburg comma, F-L. Thirty-three thousand seven
hundred
sixteen. Dear Mr period Clark colon. It is not often that I get a chance to
write such a letter. In any event, I'd like to take this moment to thank you
for your kind, gentle, and professional manner while training our class on
JAWS.

So as we hear, we've just got a bunch of text up on the screen. Nothing's
been formatted and everything is aligned along the left margin of this
document.
I'm going to go ahead and return my insertion point to the top of this
document, CTRL+HOME.

Top of file. blank

So we hear blank, and we're on a blank line at the top of the document.

However, I'd like for the date to appear at the top of my document.

Insert time and date can be found within the Insert pull down menu, which is
under Insert on the menu bar. So I'm going to press ALT+I to activate the
Insert
pull down menu.

Alt I. Menu active. Insert. Date and time dot dot dot

And this is the only item in the Insert menu. I'll press ENTER to open the
date and time dialogue.

Enter. Leaving menus. Date and time dialogue. Available formats colon list
box. Three slash five slash ninety-nine. One of thirteen.

Now this Insert format list box contains eleven different ways to let
somebody know what day it is, and two different ways to let them know what
time it
is, should we choose to. We can navigate this list view in the usual way,
either by arrowing through it or first-letter navigation. So if I wanted to
let
the recipient of my letter know that I wrote on a Friday, as opposed to
3/5/99, I could simply press the letter F and my focus will move to the
first item
in this list beginning with the letter F. I'll go ahead and do this now.

F. Friday comma, March zero-five comma, nineteen ninety-nine.

And we've got a few other options in this list beginning with Friday, but I'm
just going to select this one. I'll press ENTER.

Enter. Edit.

We hear that my application focus moves back to the main document edit
field, and I'm going to do a say current line where I'm at right now.

Friday comma, March zero-five comma, nineteen ninety-nine.

We hear that this has been inserted into our document on that blank line
that we generated. Now let's say that I also want to let my recipient know
what
time this letter was written. I'm going to go ahead and activate the Insert
pull down menu.

ALT+I. Menu bar. Menu active. Insert date and time dot dot dot.

I'll press ENTER to open the date and time dialogue.

Enter. Leaving menus. Date and time dialogue. Available formats colon list
box. Three slash five slash ninety-nine. One of thirteen.

And I know that I'm in the ten o'clock hour here, so I'm going to press the
number 1 to jump to the first item beginning with ten, or the number 1
rather.

One nineteen ninety-nine dash zero-three dash zero-five.

I'll press it again.

One ten fifty-eight colon zero a-m.

And I'm going to go ahead and select this and press ENTER on it.

Enter. Edit.

Now if I do a read

[JAWS-Users] RAM

2007-01-26 Thread rich hamel

I have JAWS 6.0 and XP home.
For months I have been having trouble with my DSL.
I have had the Bell South people on the phone and out to the house a couple
of times and nothing seems to help.
My problem is that I consistently get kicked off of the internet and OE, as
if I had dial up.
The problem was worse when I had a faster speed.
A person who deals with computers told me that I may have too little RAM
(whatever that means) and maybe I could transfer some of my RAM to my hard
drive.
How do I find how much RAM I have and how much is available.
Is it worth it to transfer any to the hard drive?.
I looked in control panel and looked in system but didn't find much
information.

Thank you for any help.

Rich

[JAWS-Users] Re: question about reading attributes

2007-01-26 Thread David Ferrin
 it the first time.

  Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Re: RAM

2007-01-26 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Rich,

Who ever told you that you needed more ram because your computer kept
kicking you off the net should never be let near your computer again, and
should be shot for even thinking that all your problems can be solved by
getting more ram.

That myth went out in the eighties with the advent of knowledge.

In any case, if you are sure that you have DSL and not cable high speed
internet, I would probably check out your time out settings and the hang up
when finished stuff.

More than likely, your time out settings are too low.

First of all, go into the tools menu and select options.

Once there, control+tab over to the connections tab and make sure that hang
up when finished sending and receiving is unchecked.

Once you've unchecked it, tab over to the apply button, press spacebar, then
shift tab over to the o.k. button.

Your next step is to check out the time out settings for your various e-mail
accounts.

In case you're wondering, the time out settings is the time at which point
the computer considers your connection inactive and will sometimes
disconnect or give yup on downloading a particular message.

This sometimes occurs when you get large file attachments.

In any case, go back into your tools menu, then into the accounts dialog
box.

Once there. select the account your are using, if you have multiple
accounts, then you'll have to do it for all the accounts individually.

If you see a large number of items in the list box, then tab once and right
arrow to the mail tab. This will highlight the e-mail accounts that are set
up in OE.

Sorry to dumb this down for you, but for the benefit of others who aren't as
experienced as you may be, they might want to check their settings also.

Of course, I have no way of knowing how much experience you have, so better
to err on the safe side.

Now that you have the account highlighted, tab over to properties and press
spacebar.

Once in the properties dialog box, control tab over to the advanced tab, tab
down to where Jaws says, server ports time out settings.

This will be a slider, and you can press page down or page up to either
increase or decrease the time out value, respectively.

In this case, you want to increase the time out value, so press the page
down key until Jaws reads 100%.

At this point, tab over to the apply button and press the spacebar.,
followed by the shift tab to the o.k. button and press it again.

Remember, as I said, you'll have to increase the time out settings on all of
your e-mail accounts, so don't think you're finished.

As for the ram issue, while performance can lag a bit if you don't have
enough of it, I believe, and someone may correct me if I'm wrong on this,
the minimum required ram for running windows XP is 128 megs of ram, and if
you want to run it optimally, 256 and above is recommended.

Either way, if you want to check out how much ram you have, go to your
desktop, and highlight your my computer icon.

Once you've done that, press the applications key and arrow up to
properties.

This will open up a dialog box with all your system's information.

You can either use the jaws cursor, by pressing the minus key on your number
pad, or the caps lock+P followed by the caps lock+left bracket to route the
jaws cursor to your pc cursor.

At this point, you'll be able to arrow down the dialog box and read all the
information that is in that dialog box.

The other option is to virtualize the window by pressing insert+control+W
and reading the information that way.

In either case, let us know if this information helps you, and I would be
curious to know exactly how much ram you have on your computer for your
friend to say that.

Please note, that the ram information will be right below the CPU speed,
just in case you get bogged down by all the numbers.

[JAWS-Users] Re: RAM

2007-01-26 Thread Dale Leavens

Hello Rich,

What version of Windows are you using? 95 and 98 could have performance
issues around the swap file size particularly as the hard drive becomes more
fragmented and more completely filled. I am unaware of similar issues under
XP but unaware is the operative concept. Adjustments to the swap file which
is the only mechanism I am aware of which sort of moves RAM out to disk is
the only thing I can think of that they might be referring to. It shouldn't
disconnect your DSL though.

Frankly I doubt RAM is the issue, more likely some or other bug, a hijacker,
worm or virus or dialer or possibly something in a security setting.

In my opinion XP Pro at least has a feature which includes random alteration
of various settings which I don't remember enjoying under 95 or 98, if that
is what you are experiencing then I don't know, I haven't figured out how to
disable that pleasure yet myself.

Hi,

I agree 110%. There could be a few different reasons for his problems, but
lack of RAM isn't one of them.
