The move will be very soon, between today and Friday if all goes according to
plan. I had a system crash the other night and still putting things back
together for the final touches. Thanks to my wife for helping out with the
membership list file from google with her skill using access the schedule looks
like it is still on track to go. Honestly I wouldn't have been able to work on
it when the system was completely gone the other night and needed reloaded from
nothing. It's not the entire way back up, but it's getting closer all of the
time. Unless somebody doesn't wish to move with the group I will simply
subscribe everybody who is on here right now to the new service myself because
it seems that would be the easiest for all concerned to do it that way. You'll
receive complete instructions for posting ETC, The audio on mail man might be a
bit slower in coming do to the previously mentioned system crash as those
things take quite a while to record and edit. I thank you all for making this
list a success and for the patients during this time of transition. Questions
concerns ETC should be directed using the form mentioned at the bottom of this
message. I'm still typing my signatures manually as they aren't even put back
in as of yet. Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, I'm still
waiting for that some days. They do things that we as blind people wouldn't be
able to do other wise, but there are days.

  Hi Siobhan,

Just some things I thought about reading your various messages to the list.

What kind of screen to you have on it?

Is it a TFT active matrix display, or an LCD?

The reason I ask is that some laptop screen produce static, and so when you
close the lid, it will occasionally interfere with the smooth running of the
touch pad.

The other thing I'm wondering is if you have a touch pad, or a track ball, or
a touch stick to control your mouse?

I find that a great number of my focus issues for Jaws on my laptops are due
to the mouse being too sensitive, and so, when I run my hand over it, it picks
up the heat of my fingers and voila, the window I was working with suddenly
looses focus and I have to alt+tab over to the window I was working with.

When I bought this new laptop, I thought it was so cool. It had a 15 inch
wide screen display, a full size keyboard, with out the number pad, which is
the way I wanted it, by the way, and hot buttons running up and down the sides
of it that would give me full control of any DVD's I played on this puppy.

Until I found out that the track point mouse, and touch pad, have a feature
for sighted people that would become the bane of my existence.

Basically, not only is it heat activated, the sides have scroll capabilities,
and touch capabilities, as well.

So, what does this mean to the average blind person?

Try typing with fat hands on the home row, and not touching the touch pad, or
any part of it.

I guarantee you, that on a laptop, it can't be done. Grin.

Anyway, it might be that your graphical user interfaces, like your mouse
touch pad and the like, are getting in the way of your access technology. The
other thing is that your laptop might have some perks designed for the sighted
user that may be running in the background. These can also get in the way of
certain focus issues.

You might want to get a copy of your laptop's user's manual, read it through
and see if there are things that are on by default, things that you may want to
disable so that it isn't taking focus away from the virtual viewer. Another
thing that I do, and this is because I've been around computers for a long
time, I go through the control panel and see what's in there, and look through
the items in there to see if there are some things that I don't recognize.
Just to give you a quick example, this new laptop has a feature called Virtual
sound, that comes on by default fresh out of the box. Essentially, what
happens is when ever some type of media file is played, whether video or sound,
the computers speakers suddenly double in size and you feel like you're in a
high definition stereo sound system and theatre.

Great if you're listening to music or movies all the time, but when the
slightest sound, like a window opening or an error sound comes on, suddenly
Jaws sounds like he's falling down a hole, or yelling from the other side of a
concert hall.

Suffice it to say, he sounds really stupid when ever this virtual sound
feature is active, so I have to disable it when I'm not listening to any music,
movies or what ever.

Like I said, it's the little things and perks for the sighted user that
suppose to impress them, but ends up getting in the way of the assistive
technology that bothers us.

Anyway, what ever the problem is, I hope you find it soon, and you can enjoy
that sweet laptop.

  Victor

 Hi David,

I tend to believe the people I know that are actually using Vista since
they'd be the best people to ask such a question to. They assure me that
not only have they installed Vista more than once on the machine, also
 that
MS isn't placing any such restrictions on anyone. As I said before, if
anyone has any provable information to the contrary then please step
 forward
with it. There are already enough scared people in the blind community
 over
Vista to start with and all this message does is to further scare the
 community with wild rumors.

 Thanks,

 Hi,

Well let me put in my two sense. This message is bunk. Maybe Chris was
unfortunate enough to talk to someone at Microsoft that didn't have a
 clue
as to what they were talking about. I've already talked to several
 people
that including myself that are running Vista that have done multiple
installs of their product whether it's retail or OEM. I haven't
 installed
my product here more than once but believe the sources that I have talked
 to
today. If anyone else has proof against what I am saying here really
 needs
to step forward with the proof they have. I talked to someone on blind
 tech
that clearly stated that this is not true in any way.

 Chris Gilland,

OK, guys get a load a this: I have Vista a bit back on my desktop. I

tried earlier tonight to re-install it, as I had a system crash a while
 back
 and

had to format and have had xp on here since.

Well, I tried to enter the key at least 5 times and it wouldn't take. I
 call
 Microsoft and told them

what was going on. Ya know what they told me?

Well Mister Gilland, because you have already installed it once, you
 can't
ever do so again. The architect of Vista won't let you.

 I then said, Ow'w'w Ka?

 Sow'w'w'w'w then'n'n'n... l'l'l'like wuhhduhh I do!

They then said easy. I can transfer you to customer service and you can
 buy
another copy and we'll ship it to ya.

I told them no, that they didn't follow, I didn't need another license,
 it
 just wasn't taking my key.

They said that's cause you've already activated it once.

I then said well I crashed it was outta my control.

Well, sir, we can get you up and going once you buy it again.

Why should us consumers have to buy Vista again, just to suit their
 greeting
money hunger over just a stupid pc format! That to me is absurd! If that

is how they wanna do business, then I say forget it, I'll stay with xp

Downloading and installing adobe reader 8, You can download this program
from:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep3.html?option=fullorder=1type=language=Englishplatform=WinXPSP2esdcanbeused=1esdcanhandle=0hasjavascript=1getsconly=1getgtb=1x=0y=0

Once the website loads, tap the letter X two times to move to the check box
that says (free Google Toolbar) and tap the space bar to uncheck it. This will
insure that you don't inadvertently download this annoying Toolbar.

You then need to tap the letter B two times or until you move to the
(download Adobe Reader button) and then tap enter to start the download
process. If you hear a blupey sound, this means that the program is being
blocked and you will need to hold down Alt and tap the letter N. then tap your
applications key, down arrow to install and enter. This will tell your computer
that it is OK to download the program.

You then will receive a message asking if you would like to run or save this
file. Up-arrow to run and enter. The download process will start. It may take a
few minutes to download. When it is dun, you will be placed on a install now
button, tap enter on this button. You now will be placed on a next button, tap
enter on this button. You now will be placed on another install button, enter
on this button. Now just sit back and let it take care of it's self. When it
has finished installing, you will be placed on a finish button. Just enter on
this button to complete the install. Keep in mind at any time you would like to
repeat the last prompt spoken, just use the JAWS repeat command insert plus tab.

Now you will need to set up the program. The license agreement will pop up.
Shift tab back to the except button and tap enter. Now an accessibility option
screen will pop up all you need to do hear is tab once to (use recommended
settings and skip setup button) and then tap enter. Now all you need to do is
use alt plus F4 to close the program and the next time you receive a .PDF file
you should be able to open it.

I hope these directions are clear, I put them together in about 10 minutes.

announcements set at 5 second intervals. I tried setting them at 5
second intervals in 7.0, but it didn't help. JAWS often announces 100
% twice just to be sure I might not have gotten it the first time.

I looked at the Technical Service Bulletins for OE at the FS site
and there weren't any related to the problem.

I have XP Home with SP2 and it's OE 6 and IE6. I haven't tried
changing the setting in the default.jcf - JAWS Configuration Manager
since there might be a program where I might want announcements. Has
anyone experienced a similar problem or am I missing something here?

Thanks,

 Margaret

I use control + c to copy something to my clipboard. I remember hearing
some time ago that the was
a key combo that you could use to add something to the original copy, but
 I can't remember what it
was. Could someone please refresh old Scooter's memory on that? Thanks.

Yes, the windows key plus C copy to clipboard command is for the FS
clipboard.

 Maria,

I'm not getting this to work here with JAWS 6.2, Word 2000, and XP
Home. Is this part of the FS Clipboard thing that was introduced with
JFW 7? I took 7 for a brief test drive and did try out the new
clipboard feature, but got side-tracked configuring 7 to my liking and
went back to 6.2 when other projects required my attention and I've
forgotten how the FS clipboard works.

If you don't mean the FS Clipboard and are referring to a Windows
command, could you go into more detail about the proper sequence to
 add items to the clipboard?

Thanks,

 Margaret

I don't recall if I posted this before or not, if so forgive my failing
memory. Any how the plan right now is to arrange the programs page to be
more like the tips and tricks page IE everything under their own headings
ETC. Also I'm going to create a page devoted to scripts. It will be
 small
at first but with luck it will grow just like everything else has up
 there.
This thing started out on 10 MB of web space and it has since out grown
 the
100 MB space I had bought for it. fortunately a generous list member is
letting me use a healthy portion of his extra room available on his server
so we're in good shape that way. Also another member is going to teach me
 a
little more HTML code than I know right now, which isn't much to be
 honest.
Any how that's the news for today.

It's a program for finding out the weather in any city, by entering the

It's also very JAWS friendly.

[JAWS-Users] Re: Labeling a graphic

2006-12-02 Thread Maria Campbell

There's got to be something wrong with my JAWS and Outlook Express.
I've done a JAWS repair with my disk, with no change.
Even with all graphics on, JAWS doesn't read the numbered graphics as it
should, and I still can get my JAWS cursor to the graphics for labeling.
I've checked my read settings and all appears normal there as well.

While in Outlook Express, press INSERT+V; locate Graphics; press SPACEBAR
until it reads All; press ENTER to save. After you lavel the graphic,
 you'll
probably want to change this back from All to Labeled.

I use Outlook Express, and since installing JAWS 8, JAWS now says all my
messages are unread, even after they are read.
I had this problem once before and was able to label the read graphic.
However I can't find that graphic with the JAWS cursor.
What do I turn on to see that graphic?
 Thank you.
