[JAWS-Users] Not hearing numbers
Hi Folks, I'm using Jaws 10 and Word 2007. When I read a book from Bookshare, there are numbers scattered throughout the text. I think they are the print page numbers. Do any of you have any suggestions as to how to have the Word "Find and Replace", delete them? Many thanks! [JAWS-Users] No punctuation during "Say All"
Hi Folks, I will be installing the Real Speak voices, but don't have them now. Under this condition, is there a way to turn off absolutely all punctuation during the reading of a Word document with Say All? I am using the latest Jaws 10 and Word 2007. Many thanks! Re: [JAWS-Users] Research It
If you hear "Home Row Utility" when you press Insert + Space you must not be using JAWS 11. JAWS 11 is the first version to provide the ResearchIt feature. The ResearchIt feature uses Insert + Space, then the R key. The Home Row Utility keystroke was changed. I just used the update and can confirm Howard's observation that it doesn't list all the NHL scores. It still hasn't resolved the Business Search feature. I thought there was going to be a link if there were more than ten results in the People Search; I just brought up a couple with more than ten but there wasn't a way to navigate past the first ten. I'm afraid this is going to be one of those features that is darned nice when it works, but you can't reliably use it. Re: [JAWS-Users] Update: Jaws speaking Heading Level 1 (issue resolved, thanks!)
Hi Don, After some trial & error last night, I called Freedom Scientific today and had my wife (sighted) on hand to pretty much go thru the steps you outlined below. Thanks to everybody who responded (or who might later when they catch up), much appreciated. Thanks too to Cory (Corey?) at FS, he had me running headings-free in a whopping three minutes. Only thing the wife and I missed last night was actually starting out with the Insert V keystroke in the application (WORD) I was particularly interested in. We started from there today, and then I believe followed the steps you detailed for other apps. Situation resolved, things runnin' great. Jaws 11 mini-review? Needless to say, since I write screenplays, this is a problem. According to my wife, everything is still the same as it was pre-upgrade. Style in WORD is normal, and it's all plain text. And, it applies the Heading Level 1 to every line, be it the title, a single sentence, a copyright date, etc. If somebody can tell me how to stop this or what setting I need to change, basically anything before I blow my brains out (I'm on deadline, no less), much appreciated. Re: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 why
I used XP Home. Then used Vista Home Premium. Then Vista Home Basic. Next Windows 7 Home Premium. Now Windows 7 Professional. Transition was very smooth for me. One thing I can say is that one advantage over 7 Pro is that if you have applications that truly will not work under Windows 7, or you prefer how applications work under XP, for example you prefer Outlook Express than say Thunderbird, then there is XP mode, a free preactivated copy of XP Pro SP3 in a virtual machine. More to the point, the transition depends on various factors. Some find it easy; others find it hard; some even find it very resistant and would rather stay on the old than bring in the new. Hope this is of some help. -- From: "Leonard Morris" Sent: Friday, April 16, 2010 12:42 AM To: Subject: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 why Earlier this week I asked a question regarding migrating to windows 7 from XP Pro. Re: [JAWS-Users] lame mp3 encoder
You need to follow the directions in Goldwave and install the Lame.dll file either in the windows\System32 folder or in the Goldwave folder. Here are the directions from the Goldwave FAQ: 1. Download a copy of the LAME MP3 zip file. 2. Open the download to extract the lame_enc.dll file from the zip file. PKZIP or WinZip may be needed to extract the file. 3. Extract the lame_enc.dll file into the folder where you installed GoldWave, usually C:\Program Files\GoldWave, or copy it into the Windows System folder, usually Windows\System (Windows 98/ME) or Windows\System32 folder (Windows2000/XP). 4. A copy of the lame_enc.dll file must be in either the GoldWave folder or the Windows System folder for GoldWave to find it. Copying the zip file won't work. The zip file can be deleted after the lame_enc.dll file is extracted. list end nesting level 1 Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. I found so many problems with Jaws 10 of a similar nature that I went back to Jaws 8. Yeah, calling normal text headings drove me around the bend. I know I did get it to stop, but there were other issues that were unstable, thus my rollback to version 8 where I'm still happy. I'm disappointed to hear those same problems are in version 11. [JAWS-Users] issue with outlook 2003 and the new jfw update
Hello list, Before contacting FS tech support I wanted to see if anyone else is having this issue or if it's just me... With the new JFW 11 updated released yesterday I'm getting all my e-mail messages spoken twice in my Outlook 2003. When going up or down the listbox Jaws will speak the name, subject, received date etc like it usually does, but now instead of just that and then going on to speak the first lines of the e-mail message like it's always done, Jaws will repeat this information and then start speaking the e-mail message text. My customize Outlook message list settings are the same and even after tinkering with them a little, thinking that might have been it, jaws still repeats the same stuff twice. Like I said, this behavior wasn't present in prior versions of JFW so it leads me to conclude that it's something to do with this new update. If anyone else is experiencing this please let me know. Also if they were able to figure out what I may do to somehow correct it if possible I would appreciate it too. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws speaking: Heading Level 1 question
Try the following to turn off heading announcements. I realize your Word document is not an HTML webpage, but I believe JAWS treats headings and such the same, whether on a webpage, PDF document, or Word document. 1. Press Insert (CapsLock if using the laptop keyboard layout) + F2, then arrow down to "Configuration Manager", and hit Enter. 2. Press Control + Shift + D, to open the Default file, so the change applies to all applications. 3. Press Alt + S, followed by H, to open the "HTML Options" dialog. 4. Press Control + Tab until you hear the "Headings and Frames" Tab. 5. You should be placed on the "Heading Verbosity" radio buttons. Arrow down to "No headings" and press Enter. 6. Press Control + S to save your settings and then Alt + F4 to close Configuration Manager". If you want to handle heading announcements in unique ways or to handle level 1 headings different from level 4 headings, check out the Sounds and Speech Manager within the Configuration Manager. I have a scheme that reads level 2 headings (RSS feed headlines) and Quotes in the Daniel voice, Karen for norermal text and Speak capitals and All Caps. I do not use this scheme all of the time, but I like the effect. Windows 7 is much faster, secure, and easier to navigate. If you can't find it, just type it in the surch box and after a few letters, it will give you some choices. Another reason is, support for XP is suppose to be going away in 2011, but they have moved this date more times than I care to count. Now let me warn you, coming from XP to windows 7, there will be a significant learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it will be easy. I went from XP to vista then windows 7, so it was a little easier for me. Good luck, and remember, these are just my opinions based on what I've learned and experienced over the last 6 months, and 3 months before that on the Release canadate. Good luck in your choice. -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Leonard Morris Sent: Thursday, April 15, 2010 6:42 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] windows 7 why Earlier this week I asked a question regarding migrating to windows 7 from XP Pro. I didn't get a response perhaps my description might have been confusing. No problem. Let me ask this differently. Why should I migrate to Window 7 from XP pro? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws speaking: Heading Level 1 question
No, I think it had something to do with going into config manager, text processing html settings maybe and unchecking something to do with show headings. I remember there is a headings checkbox somewhere in there, and unchecking that helped. But I can't pin it down now as I don't have the problem. - Original Message - From: "Kimsan" To: Sent: Thursday, April 15, 2010 11:31 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws speaking: Heading Level 1 question Could it be set in an outline view? -Original Message- From: jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jean Menzies Sent: Thursday, April 15, 2010 8:07 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws speaking: Heading Level 1 question Hi Joe, Sory I can't help you, but I'd love to know the answer as well. I considered it a very major problem, and I'm surprised why people didn't holler and have FS fix it. Just upgraded to Jaws 11 today, and in every WORD file I open, every line (be it the first line in a paragraph or continuing text from a previous line) Jaws reads out: Heading Level 1. [JAWS-Users] lame mp3 encoder
Hi all, I recently tried to convert a file to mp3 using goldWave. I tried converting first a wma file, then a wav file. both times I was told I needed to download the lame mp3 encoder. I went to where I keep all my program install files, and went to install the lame encoder EXE file. I pressed enter on the run button, but nothing happened. does anyone know why the encoder isn't installing and what might have happened in the first place to make it be uninstalled? I've had goldWave for a while, but and only a few weeks converted a file to mp3 I am using the trial version of goldWave. thanks in advance, from Andrew For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
