Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening PDF documents in Acrobat Reader instead of a browser such as IE, revisited
Hi John and Linda The Freedom Scientific instructions for opening a PDF document in Acrobat Reader instead of IE were at the bottom of my original email, and therefore are also at the bottom of this email. If I try to virtualize the IE window, JAWS just tells me that the window is already virtualized. However, I can do a control+a to select all the text in the IE window and then copy it and paste it into a text document. But I only get portions of the PDF document. Also, I misspoke when I said the PDF document was readable in the IE window. Again only random parts of the document are read. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of john_Justice Sent: Thursday, December 03, 2015 07:57 To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Opening PDF documents in Acrobat Reader instead of a browser such as IE, revisited Hello Mike, I have two reasons for responding to your original message. Can you send me the procedure for setting up Adobe Acrobat to open in the manner you described? Once your .pdf document is displayed, can you virtualize the screen and copy the document in that way? The only issue I can see there is that you'd have an interesting challenge with documents having multiple pages. PDF documents were being opened in Adobe Reader as expected until I accepted the download and installation of the latest version of Adobe Reader, titled Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, version 15.009.20079. Now, when I press enter or space on a web site link to download a PDF document, it just opens up in a new IE window. This new IE window has no menus, including the context menu brought up by the applications key or shift F10, no link and no buttons to be able to download it. The PDF document is processed by Adobe reader and can be read with JAWS. But there is no way to save it to my computer. I know that on some web sites, when I'm positioned on a link, I can bring up the context menu and press enter on the Save as option to download the document. But many of the sites from which I download PDF documents, the save as option is grayed and unavailable. This behavior exists using both JAWS 16 and 17. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Pinky Sent: Tuesday, December 01, 2015 10:00 To: JAWS-Users-List 2 Subject: [JAWS-Users] FS way of making PDF files load in a separate window in IE Hi Group, This morning I receive an email from FS support on how to make PDF files open in a separate window in IE. How to get Adobe Reader to open in its own window by Freedom Scientific You actually make this change in the Adobe Reader application using the instructions below: A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open it: 1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu. 2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu. 3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page. 4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three. 5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is OK. Press ENTER to move to page four. 6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change the radio button from "For large documents, only read the currently visible pages" to "Read the entire document at once." If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find. 7. The problem seems to be that when I make a change to the start options to load jaws at login that Window 10 displays a message asking if I want to allow Freedom Scientific to make a change to my system which is not visible to Jaws. It does this regardless of where I make the change, in the basic menu or the startup wizard. With sighted help I have checked the option to allow the change but it still doesn't work. Re: [JAWS-Users] After updating to seventeen
It is likely you still have Jaws 16 on your machine. That is unless you uninstalled it after installing Jaws 17. If you did not uninstall the older version and you still wish to do so, go to programs and features in the control panel, find Jaws 16 then right click it and hit uninstall/change. Remove Jaws only, do not remove the shared components. One more thing, make sure all your programs behave with Jaws 17. Sometimes, programs that work well under one version of Jaws don't work so well under the newer version. Hi LeDon, You can also assign shortcut keystrokes to each version of Jaws. Below are a couple of ways to do this: From: "Gerald Levy" < 1. Launch the Desktop by pressing Windows key-M. 2. Press J repeatedly until you land on the JAWS icon. 3. Press Alt-Enter to bring up the JAWS Properties page. 4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key combination of your choice, like Alt-Control-J or whatever other combination you prefer. 5. Tab to Apply button, hit Space, then tab around again to the Okay button and hit Space. That's it. Now, when you press Alt-Control-J or whatever shortcut key you assigned, JAWS will be launched. HTH. Gerald From: "Flor Lynch"yes. there are several ways. perhaps the easiest way is to pick your version of JAWS icon on your desktop, windowsKey+m, then the letter j until the version you want is highlighted. then press alt-enter for Properties. Then tab into the dialogue, shortcut tab. then when you have the shortcut key edit high;lighted, you can either assign a letter to be added to the pre-existing alt+ctrl keys, let's say, press j to make it alt-ctrl-j. (Or press ctrl-shift or alt-shift or alt-ctrl-shift with j or anyt other letter, whichever is your fancy.) Then when 6you've added in the letter, tab to OK and activate it with spacebar. Soon after, insert+f4 to unload JAWS; then press your shortcut key combo to ensure that it is working. - be sure to use a shortcut that is not already in use by another program; or one that windows allows you to use. I normally don't chime in on this kind of thing but I must point out that 17 seems to have an issue on the BARD library web page. Why you might ask, I have no idea at all. Never the less on multiple systems it works better to revert to 16 when making my selections of reading material. [JAWS-Users] Issues with Mozilla thunderbird, Jaws 17, and Windows 10
Hi, I'm having issues with Mozilla Thunderbird, JAWS 17, and Windows 10. First, when I'm in my list of messages, JAWS won't read the headers of the messages within the list, and when I try to select multiple messages, it just says selected, but it doesn't tell me which messages are being selected. Also, mozilla thunderbird really doesn't seem very responsive as a whole, but I'm not sure if this is a problem with thunderbird, JAWS 17, or Windows 10 or a combination of all 3. Is anyone else having these issues or similar issues? Also, are there any other alternative email programs that will work well with gmail, JAWS 17, and windows 10. I know about outlook, but I'm really not sure I want to be putting out that much money for an email program. Any insight into how to resolve these problems would be gratefully appreciated.
