[JAWS-Users] website to the taskbar windows 10

2016-02-14 Thread Kimsan
I just got a new laptop. I am pimping my ride as they say and must start
from scratch to customize this beast. Lol, I forgot how to pin a website to
my taskbar. Actually, I know how to do it but there is that one keystroke
that I forgot which is to bring up a list of your apps on windows ten. From
there I can do it but anyone know the keystroke?

2016-02-14 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

The Dectalk Express is only a speech synthesizer that Can be used by JAWS or
other programs that support it, such as OpenBook 7. It does not replace
JAWS or add any functionality to it. The advantage
To me is the original Dectalk voices. To me, the original Dectalk voices
sound much better than Eloquence or any of the other synthesizers provided
by Freedom Scientific. I tried Eloquence when it first came out with JAWS
for Windows version 3 for 2 or three weeks. I found that when reading long
passages with Eloquence, I started to doze after the 2nd or 3rd paragraph.
So I switched back to the Dectalk Express synthesizer I received when I
first got JAWS, Until I could replace it with the Dectalk Access32 software
synthesizer. But I had to switch back to the Dectalk express when I moved
to Windows 7.

Hi

The Dectalk Access32 synthesizer from Freedom Scientific is a software
synthesizer. You install it like any other program. It does not use any
kind of cable to connect to the computer. Therefore a serial to USB
converter cable won't work. However, a serial to USB converter works fine
with the Dectalk Express, which is an external hardware synthesizer. The
Dectalk express synthesizer with a serial to USB converter cable is what I'm
using on Windows 7 and 8.

Since I'm looking at the list right now, I'll give my answers to your Dectalk
Express questions. I'm sure Mike will have his.

No, Dectalk Express does not allow early BIOs access.

For the most part, think of it as another voice.

However, it allows a computer to run on a single speech card without JAWS
interference.

Otherwise, speaking for myself, Dectalk Express provides the best combination
of intelligible speech and fast response. Reasonable minds differ.

However, for most people, the question is academic because the Dectalk Express
hasn't been manufactured in nearly two decades. I cling to mine for dear life!

I agree with Mike that the current so-called Dectalk products bear no
resemblance to the originals.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Switching to a newly installed voice

2016-02-14 Thread Adrian Spratt
I hope this isn't a superfluous post, but when I look over this thread, it's
not clear to me that all three steps were taken once the voice was installed.

First, open the JAWS window with JAWS key+j, then arrow up (or l) to
"Language," press enter, then arrow down to "voice profile," Enter. Then c for
"Create new..." Enter, then tab.

Second, return to the JAWS window, go to options, voices, voice profile, select
the newly installed voice, and then tab through the settings in case any (such
as pitch adjustment) need to be change.

Finally, as mentioned, there's the JAWS key+control+s list for selecting the
profile currently desired.

With any luck, one of these steps was overlooked and the new voice will be
recognized.

Were the voices you installed Vocalizer Expressive or Vocalizer Direct? One
of those synthesizers should have automatically shown up after you

voice synthesizers? If your using the Select a voice profile dialog by

Hi

Any time you install a new voice profile into JAWS, JAWS must be restarted
before the new profile shows up. So when you pressed enter on the Vocalizer
voice, if it told you that the voice was installed successfully, the
Vocalizer voice profile should automatically show up. So try restarting
JAWS or rebooting to see if the Vocalizer profile is there. To change the
pitch for a voice profile, you have to change it for each of the JAWS voices
individually. So go to the JAWS main menu, options, voices and then voice
adjustment. Find the voice profile you want to change the profile for.
Then tab until you get to the combo box that says adjust all contexts. Then
down arrow to each of the different individual voices, such as the PC
cursor, JAWS cursor, etc. Tab until you get to pitch and set it to what you
want. Then you can back tab to the adjust combo box and arrow down to the
next voice.

the only voices included were Eloquence and Sappy 5. I downloaded a
vocalizer voice from the FS site and I guess I didn't install it correctly
because I can't find it in the voice profile dialogue. After I downloaded

can use the new voice? Also, where do I find pitch adjustment?

Thanks so much,

[JAWS-Users] Audible "numeric string" ...

2016-02-14 Thread Jim Hamilton
HI ALL:

To start, I use JAWS 17 on a Windows 8.1, 64-bit PC, and the below problem
happens in Word 2013 and OUTLOOK 2013. JAWS has been set to handle
"numbers", as aposed to the synthacizer, and it is set to say longer numbers
in "pairs" - which may be relevant. This has been happening for a long
time; so, I am not sure if it was doing this with JAWS 16, which was setup
in the same way regarding the handling of numbers.

When reading a long number (even if only 2-digits), individual digit by
individual digit, I often hear a "numeric string" after every digit I hear.
Sometimes, I hear this same numeric string after reading a "whole number" ,
seemingly attached to that "whole number". This has become much more
bothersome lately, because I am working on things like "budgets" and
"fund-raising" planning sheets - things with which I would not have been
concerned for a long time.

The audible, numeric string "appears to be" 112075, which reads as 11, 20,
75 - alided closely together. I can not seem to separate the individual
digits, even using the "spell mode", because this string reads much more
quickly than if I simply had JAWS read the text "11 20 75", and the reading
speed does not seem to be at issue.

For whatever reason that this may be happening, can anyone tell me how to
stop this? I am worried that I may be sending messages/documents to people
that will read the same way as they do for me, and this could be confusing.
... not to mention, make me sound stupid - at least for a minute or 2! :)
:)

BTW: I should point out, sadly, that this problem did not show up in
re-reading this message; so, this would appear to be an inconsistent
problem. Still, any suggestions would be appreciated, even if the only
person's confusion, that gets cleared up, is mine.

Thanks.

Jim H

Hi

If they're using one of the newer Versions of Dectalk speech such as Dectalk
USB or Dectalk Sappi 5, those will work on Windows 7 for JAWS and NVDA. But
in my opinion, those versions are not Dectalk speech. The voices have very
little resemblance to the Dectalk Access32 synthesizer. And as I stated in
my earlier email, I believe that FS cut off using Dectalk Access from any
other source than Freedom Scientific back in JAWS 11 or 12.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Switching to a newly installed voice

2016-02-14 Thread Mike O'Brien
Hi

Were the voices you installed Vocalizer Expressive or Vocalizer Direct? One
of those synthesizers should have automatically shown up after you
installed the voices and restarted JAWS. How are you checking the available
voice synthesizers? If your using the Select a voice profile dialog by
pressing JAWSkey+control+s and one of the vocalizer Direct or Vocalizer
Expressive synthesizers do not appear, I would give Freedom Scientific
support a call. I'm sorry I don't have any better answer at this time.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the message, I remain unable to see the vocalizer voice in the
voice profile section. I did a repair on the Vocalizer installation and did
a modification of same, installing the American english voice, with no joy.
Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Norma

Tab until you get to pitch and set it to what you
want. Then you can back tab to the adjust combo box and arrow down to the
next voice.

Hi group,

I'm using Jaws 16 on my new laptop. When I installed Jaws from a download
the only voices included were Eloquence and Sappy 5. I downloaded a
vocalizer voice from the FS site and I guess I didn't install it correctly
because I can't find it in the voice profile dialogue. After I downloaded
the vocalizer voice, I just hit enter on the file and I thought that would
install it. Would someone please help me figure out where I went wrong so I
can use the new voice? Also, where do I find pitch adjustment?

Thanks so much,
Norma

Re: [JAWS-Users] Access 32?

2016-02-14 Thread Alan Robbins
Mike,

What is the advantage of using the dectalk express hardware
device? Does this replace JAWS or work in tandem with it
Does it allow access to the computer BIOS prior to a
Window's boot up?

Best,
Al

Hi

The Dectalk Access32 synthesizer from Freedom Scientific is
a software synthesizer. You install it like any other
program. It does not use any kind of cable to connect to
the computer. Therefore a serial to USB converter cable
won't work. However, a serial to USB converter works fine
with the Dectalk Express, which is an external hardware
synthesizer. The Dectalk express synthesizer with a serial
to USB converter cable is what I'm using on Windows 7 and 8.

Then would it work?

Hi

No, you cannot use Dectalk Access32 on a Windows 7 computer.
It only works on Windows XP.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your response. When you say, if I pay
for an upgrade on my JAWS, I could use Dec Talk Access 32,
are you saying that with that I could use it on my Windows 7
computer?

Thanks again! Sincerely, Vicky

Hi

If you're referring to Dectalk Access32, the version from
Freedom Scientific will run on any Version of JAWS, but only
if it is run on Windows XP or lower. Unfortunately, Dectalk
Access32 cannot be successfully used on Windows Vista, 7 or
8 and I assume Windows 10. So Dectalk Access32 can be used
on JAWS 15 and earlier on Windows XP. But it cannot be used
with JAWS
16 or later since they can't be installed on Windows XP. To
use Dectalk
Access32 from Freedom Scientific you had to pay for an
upgrade to your JAWS license. There also used to be a
version of Dectalk Access32 from GW Micro, but I believe
JAWS stopped supporting that version in JAWS 11 or 12.

Hi List, Does anyone here, remember using Access32, the
first software synthesizer for JAWS?

After a certain point, I thought we could no longer use it.
However, I know I have heard of people using it far after I
thought we no longer could do so.

Therefore, my question is, Is there anyway we can do so with
JAWS 16 or 17?

If yes and if you know how to set this up, would you email
me at:
vrvaug...@mailzone.com

I would greatly appreciate it!

Many and sincere thanks!

Vicky

I know several people who are using access 32 withNVDA on a Windows 7 machine.
Do you mean to say it won't work with jaws on Windows 7 computers?
