After restarting my computer and waiting around an hour, the desktop came
up. However, my sighted wife says that there's an error message having to do
with the audio/sound application not being loaded. Following the prompts,
though we are given the option to enable audio, this doesn't seem to occur.
Nor am I able to connect to the Internet even though this machine is

I've checked online and even someone on one of these lists recommended to
uninstall audiodrivers in the device manager, and restart, but this doesn't

I also tried accessing system restore and am presented with an error message

I've since tried rebooting and am again stuck on that original screen before
the desktop.

Crist says he started the process form the downloaded installer. From that
point of view, he did everything right.

Crist, if you and your wife can arrange it, I think you need to call FS

went into diagnostic mode instead of normal startup. I did this once when

may be times where you have six or more windows opened at the same time on
your computer. If you press, Ctrl + Alt + Tab, and then use the right and
left Arrow keys to see all the open windows on your computer, press Enter on
the window you want to have focus, you will land in that window. This is
fantastic, of course, you can ALT+Tab to the window you want as well. I like
learning new keystrokes for different situations. I am not sure if this will
work on prior versions of Windows, let me know. Happy learning! Smiles. Jim

reboot. Upon reboot Windows installed some generic audio drivers that
worked.

Hello list,

So I downloaded and updated the new jaws 18 release that was made available
today.

I first ran the update on my personal Win 7 Pro Dell laptop and everything
went as usual. Did the reboot and all was good. I'm writing this email on
that machine.

I waited for the business day to be over before doing the same on my Dell
Win 10 pro business desktop. Again, ran the downloaded installer, went
through the process and clicked on the ok button when I was prompted to
reboot.

However, on the desktop, I am not able to get to the actual desktop. Indeed,

[JAWS-Users] To run the System file checker

2017-02-24 Thread Lenny McHugh
I am now convinced that there is a hardware problem with my computer.
Suspect mother board. It does not matter what app but at random I get a not
response message. There is also something funky going on with open book.
First contacted FS for the open book problem. Did all that they suggested.
Then contacted Microsoft. They made quite a few checks and changes to the
computer, a win 7 32 bit machine. This did not correct any of the problems.
He then sent me the instructions to check the system files. This too had no
affect. It must be a hardware problem. As opposed to trying to reinstall
windows and all of the apps he suggested that I could purchase a laptop for
around $200. I have one of those and hate it ,it is about as fast as my
old 8088 xt. Anyway maybe this information will help someone:

Hi Lenny

Thanks for contacting Answer Desk.

open an elevated admin command prompt. Search CMD on the start menu then hit
application key go to run as administrator. Type in sfc /scannow let it run.
It will repair any corrupt windows system files.

I've checked online and even someone on one of these lists recommended to

Crist says he started the process form the downloaded installer. From that
point of view, he did everything right.

Crist, if you and your wife can arrange it, I think you need to call FS
together. They need to know that installation of the current JAWS 18 caused
this nightmare, and they will be eager to help. I'm guessing you somehow
went into diagnostic mode instead of normal startup. I did this once when

Enhancements in JAWS 18.0.2530 (February 2017)

The following is a list of improvements made between the JAWS 18 January
2017 release and the February 2017 update.

To download the latest release, visit the Downloads web page.

New Support for ElBraille Applications

This update adds JAWS scripts for Keyboard Editor and ElNotes, applications
included specifically on the new ElBraille, a Windows 10 Notetaker from
Elita Group.

The ElBraille is a Windows 10 computer in the shape and size of a
traditional notetaker, and is designed for users who are blind or deaf-blind
and want to stay connected at school, work, or home as well as on the go.
The twenty-first century, take anywhere replacement for the dedicated
notetaker, ElBraille combines the power and flexibility of a modern
mainstream computer running the Windows 10 operating system with JAWS and a
braille display with a full braille keyboard to offer a fully accessible
compact computer. JAWS provides the best screen reader experience with
either Eloquence speech output or the highly responsive and life-like
Vocalizer Expressive Compact voices as well as full braille output. Type
text into documents or perform JAWS and Windows commands right from the
braille display's keyboard using the JAWS BrailleIn feature. Run any Windows
application such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook. Use
FSReader to read DAISY books from sources such as Bookshare.org or browse
the internet with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
ElBraille also includes a set of specially designed apps for performing
popular actions such as the creation of voice or text notes, listening to
audio content, and more.

The ElNotes application developed by Elita Group is designed to create,
store, and manage text and voice notes on the ElBraille Notetaker. ElNotes
allows a user to quickly create text and voice notes using a set of special
keystrokes and then export them to TXT or MP3 files respectively, if needed.

These
files are saved to a user-specified folder and then are available to be read
and listened to using other ElBraille applications.

The ElBraille Keyboard Editor is designed for adding, modifying, and
removing keystrokes using ElBraille buttons and Focus 14 Blue keys. Users
can assign a keystroke to launch an application, simulate a QWERTY keyboard
shortcut, or perform a JAWS script.

Amazon Kindle App Support

JAWS now supports reading books in Amazon's Kindle for PC app version 1.19
and later. This enables users to access books purchased through the Amazon
Kindle store right on their Windows PC using both speech and braille. Books
can be navigated using all standard reading commands including reading by
character, word, line, paragraph, and continuously with Say All. As JAWS
reads, pages turn automatically so you can enjoy a book without
interruption.

JAWS can only access Kindle books that support Enhanced Typesetting. The
product details for the book on the Amazon web site indicates if Enhanced
Typesetting is enabled. This exposes the necessary information to screen
readers and provides access to the book content.

Tip: Pressing CTRL+HOME or CTRL+END while reading a Kindle book moves to the
top or bottom of the current page instead of the top or bottom of the
document as in other applications. To move to the beginning or end of the
book, you can use the Go to Location dialog box which is accessed using the
Kindle command
CTRL+G.

Google Docs Improvements

To improve the user experience with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google
Drive, the Virtual Cursor is now turned off by default when focus is in any
of these applications. Since these are basically programs running inside a
browser window with their own sets of keystrokes, turning off the Virtual
Cursor makes it much easier to interact and provides an environment that
feels more like a standard application.

In some situations, the Virtual Cursor will be automatically turned on when
it is needed to review information. For example, pressing CTRL+SLASH in
Google Docs opens a page listing available Google

of website but, unless/until I get win 10, I'm not hopeful.

And, yes, I did mean ad nauseum but, in addition to infinitim. It goes on
forever! Karen

Or maybe people just don't want to learn new things because it's easier to
stick with the older stuff, no matter how unsafe it is.

Guys, this is the new standard, there must be instructions on how to handle
those particular elements on a webpage, you just have to find them.

Try Freedom Scientific's homepage to see if they have tutorials and learn
them, especially since more and more sites are trending to that format.

I am going crazy with the new formats for websites. I'm using IE 11, win 7,
and jaws 17 latest. If I go to the family history website

Familysearch.org

I get "button menu collapsed, button menu collapsed, button menu collapsed"
ad infinitim.

I've tried enter, alt enter, control enter, left and right mouse buttons and
just arrows and cannot change anything from collapsed. I do get a context
menu with the right mouse button but, it's not helpful. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Karen

Re: [JAWS-Users] Major computer issue after updating Jaws

2017-02-24 Thread Adrian Spratt
Crist says he started the process form the downloaded installer. From that
point of view, he did everything right.

Crist, if you and your wife can arrange it, I think you need to call FS
together. They need to know that installation of the current JAWS 18 caused
this nightmare, and they will be eager to help. I'm guessing you somehow went
into diagnostic mode instead of normal startup. I did this once when messing
around with the MSConfig file, and I needed sighted expertise to get me out of
it. My guess is that FS/VFO can do this for you.

Hello list,

So I downloaded and updated the new jaws 18 release that was made available
today.

I first ran the update on my personal Win 7 Pro Dell laptop and everything went
as usual. Did the reboot and all was good. I'm writing this email on that
machine.

I waited for the business day to be over before doing the same on my Dell Win
10 pro business desktop. Again, ran the downloaded installer, went through the
process and clicked on the ok button when I was prompted to reboot.

However, on the desktop, I am not able to get to the actual desktop. Indeed,
there is absolutely no sound coming from my machine. The only way I know what's
going on is with my sighted wife's help. I get to the screen with three buttons
for connect to the Internet, ease of access and the power down button. The
connect to the Internet button is crossed out as if it hasn't completed
loading. The ease of access button is active, but even if I try to start
narrator, there is still no sound. My wife says that it looks like Narrator
turns on, but with no sound, there's nothing I can do. That and since the
desktop doesn't come up, I still can't get anywhere. The only thing we're able
to do is access the power button to either restart or shut down the computer.

We've tried restarting and pressing the f12 button when that prompt comes up
briefly, but then I get a screen with options of a legacy boot and other
diagnostics options that I'm not familiar with.

As far as the sound goes, I've made sure and checked with both my USB powered
headphones and regular desktop speakers. There aren't even any system sounds.

Don't know if even calling FS would be of any help since again, there's no
audible feedback what so ever. Can't even try a system restore since I can't
get to the desktop where everything's fully loaded. NVDA doesn't come up
either.

Any ideas?

I'm really at a loss.

I tried this on my windows 10 computer with the latest build of jaws and
this is what I got so I will outline the whole thing below because this
happened to me more than once and I had to get sighted help so I learned
something new today also.

1 press windows key plus b together,
2 press the left arrow key 3 times then press inter,
3 press the tab key 1 time then press inter again and if for some reason the
speaker's have been muted you should have sound again.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 mail app;

Good morning all;

Yesterday I setup a client's computer, during the process I also setup the
windows 10 mail app.

I have 2 questions, regarding the app.

1, is there a way to remove the grouped by conversation,

2, I can't seem to get the reply, ctrl+r to work,

Also, I just thought of a third question,

My client uses the gmail web mail, is there a way to export/import her contacts
into the people app.
