Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Not Announcing Safe To Remove

2017-12-30 Thread Mike B.
Hi Again All,

Okay, I got Jaws to announce the safe to remove notification by changing the
default, Notification sound, in Control Panel / Sounds link / Sounds,
Windows tree View. I used my own sound, & it's a little more verbose than
earlier operating systems, but it works! Happy New Year to all.

Hi Jason,

I don't get an eject option in the context menu of File Explorer, but how do
I get Jaws to announce it's safe to remove / eject even if I had the eject
option? Also, how do I get Jaws to announce the safe to remove announcement
when using Safe to Remove from the system tray?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws & Win10 Latest

2017-12-30 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi,
Whenever you move away from a universal app, it'll be suspended. A small
piece of the app will continue to run in the background if told to do so. As
for this affecting startup, I don't know for sure.
As for Cortana: until a few years ago, you could disable Cortana altogether.
Now you can't: some found out that if you did disable Cortana from an
earlier Windows 10 release, enabling it in recent releases is hard, and for
some, requiring a system reset. Cortana has become a part of Windows 10 that
cannot be separated easily (at least for majority of users), as it now
powers search experience (including online search capability in Start menu
in Version 1709). These days, Cortana has become more proactive to a point
where it'll offer to save things that might interest you (called
"collections", which will make its debut in 2018).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hey Joseph.

I don't have the problem posted above, but thanks for posting this
explanation anyway. So, I have found this setting about background-running
apps and unchecked the box. Does this mean they will essentially open and
close as standard desktop programmes do? Does this affect apps loaded into
the background at startup? For example, I always see cortana nowadays in my
task manager, even though I do not use it and in fact modified the registry
to disable it.

when I press enter on the drive I want to disconnect. How can I get Jaws to

Hi Kurt,

I have to admit, I don't have a clue as to where to find or how to get into
Live Tiles! This is a setting I have not come across, or just didn't
notice. I have accomplished getting rid of all the stuff showing in the
Jaws Task List in all Jaws versions except for J16. Thanks to you all!

Did you check in the live tiles region and turn any of them off that may be
showing up in there? Upon reading your message, I remember an app doing this
to me.

Hi,
Real reason: they are windows for universal apps. When you close a universal
app (such as Skype UWP, Cortana, Microsoft Store and what not) on Windows
10, they will still run. The technical term for this is called "app
suspension" (introduced in Windows 8.x) where the app window will appear to
have closed but are in fact suspended.
The JAWS window list command (JAWS Key+F10) lists top-level windows on
screen, including windows for universal apps. The "true" ways to close
universal apps are via Task Manager or going to Settings/Privacy/Background
and preventing apps from running in the background.
Also, someone suggested (here or somewhere) to use msconfig. No, this method
won't work on universal apps at all. There will come a time in 2018 where
you can open Settings app to control which apps start on startup, including
universal apps.
Cheers,
Joseph

Mike, in the run dialogue box, type "msconfig". In the startup tab, I
suspect you have a lot of "crap"(your words) and uncheck the items as you
down arrow through the list of startup items. About all I leave checked in
the start up dialogue is Jaws. Everything else you can start as needed.

The open with option is temporary. To make it permanent, you need to go into
default programs and change that program type to open with MS Word each
time.

I don't know with the latest Kindle if you can have Jaws spell words, but my
inclination is yes.

And, yes, it perfectly syncs to the phone; in other words, if you stop
reading on the second paragraph on Page 22, and start reading on your phone,
it will pick up right at that second paragraph.

I am thinking about downloading the Kendal for Windows and have a couple
questions.

First, how much access does Jaws have to the text? Can I read by word or
spell words? Can I copy text from a book to another document?

Second, will the Windows app sync with my IPhone?

Thanks.
