Re: [JAWS-Users] Classic Shell setting

2018-03-27 Thread Fernando Gregoire
Hi Mike,

Your are right on this. However, the checkboxes about which I want to know are
those available in tree views.
For example, when in Classic Start Menu settings you choose Windows 7 style
advanced settings, you can choose wetter initial focus is in the search box,
or, in Windows XP style, wetter recent programs have keyboard shortcuts with
numbers, initial letters or none, or additional search providers if you use the
Windows 2000 and earlier classic style which had a Search sub-menu. In all
styles you can specify which options to display (Documents, Control Panel etc.)
and how, and here it would be useful to know instantly the states of checkboxes
in a way similar to Folder Options tree view which reports On or Off after the
option name.

Thanks!

Hi Fernando,

The only checkboxes, so to speak, that are read by Jaws are the Basic Settings
& the All Settings radio buttons. You will get these 2 radio buttons after you
click on a setting link, i.e; Open Start menu , press enter on either, Windows
Classic link, Windows XP link, Windows Vista / Windows 7 link. Now after you
press enter, tab to the Basic Settings / All Settings radio buttons, choose
which one you want, tab to, Okay, & press enter. Now your settings are
changed, but for me anyways, I don't know how the chosen settings will look /
be read by Jaws until afterward. This is why I say it takes some playing
around with the Classic, XP, or Vista / Win 7settings, & both the Basic / All
settings to get a feel for how Jaws will read for you. Personally, I don't
care about the Explorer & IE settings, & only configure the Start Menu settings.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Holger,

After installing Classic Shell you have to go into the various options &
configure them. for example, you need to configure the Start Menu to show the
way you want it.

To do this:
1. Open the Start Menu, & open the All Programs sub-menu.
2. Find the Classic Shell program & open the folder.
3. In here you will have, Classic Explorer Settings, Classic IE9 settings, &
Classic Start Menu settings. Press enter on the 1 of choice to get to your
options.
For example in the Classic Start Menu settings. You have Windows Classic,
Windows XP, & Windows Vista / Windows 7 links.
Click on 1 of them & choose from All settings or Basic settings.

It takes a little tinkering around, but eventually you'll get them the way you
want them. I believe I use the Windows Classic & All settings for the Start
menu.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

I have revised the instructions to make them a bit more thorough and
complete. Note that these instructions will work with IE. They may or may
not work with other browsers that do not already support the extension
version of Rumola, but the specifics will vary.
1. Go to the main Rumola website here,
http://skipinput.com/
2. Highlight the link labeled
.. RUMOLA
with the Tab key (not the Arrow keys). It is important to use the Tab key
since the Arrow keys may or may not properly highlight the link.
3. Note that pressing Enter on the link before this next step may possibly
make it more effective, but it is not strictly necessary. In either case,
after you have highlighted the link with the Tab key and possibly pressed
Enter, press the Applications key and choose
"Add to favorites..."
from the context menu.
4. In the
"Create in"
combo box, select
"Favorites Bar"

Hi,
I've been looking for Rumola for Internet Explorer, and I haven't found it.
I installed the add-on for Chrome, but IE is my main browser.
Thank you if anyone can send me a link for it if it is up-to-date for IE.
FYI, Rumola is a captcha solver, for those web pages that ask us to enter
the letters in the window.
Even if they were legible, they aren't accessible.
There are times I'd pay a couple bucks to have someone read the captcha for
me.
Looks like it's available for FF, but I'm not ready to go back to FF yet.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Classic Shell setting

2018-03-27 Thread Mike B.
Hi Holger,

After installing Classic Shell you have to go into the various options &
configure them. for
example, you need to configure the Start Menu to show the way you want it.

To do this:

It takes a little tinkering around, but eventually you'll get them the way
you want them. I believe I use the Windows Classic & All settings for the
Start menu.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Everyone,

I have JAWS 13, Windows 7 Home Edition and Outlook 14.

In the past few weeks, it seems that my Outlook program has become very
sluggish in receiving my new e-mails. When I would open up my laptop in the
morning and press F-9, to receive my new e-mail's and press Control & the
home key all my new unread e-mail's would pop up instantly.

In the past couple of weeks, when I do the procedure mentioned above, no new
e-mails would pop up. It now takes a very long time and pressing many keys
to try and receive my new e-mails.

I also noticed, that if I send myself a test e-mail it takes a very long
time for my test e-mail to appear on my list. In the past, as soon as I
would press the F-9 key, I would hear the ping and the test e-mail would be
on the top of my e-mails instantly.

The only difference that I see with my outlook program is that now when I
press the insert key and the page down key Jaws says, the number of e-mails
I have, the number of unread e-mails and this is a new addition in the past
couple of weeks, it says receive/send and of course at the end it says the
usual 10%.

Could this new addition of Send/Receive cause the problem in my Outlook
becoming so sluggish? I do not know what I may have pressed to cause this
problem. Can anyone give me a detailed fix to avoid this sluggish Outlook
problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Sluggish Outlook

2018-03-27 Thread wayne smith
I got a Windows 7 update a couple of days ago and my bank website no longer
recognized my computer so I had to go through steps to re-identify myself. I
went to print a MS Word doc and the computer announced that it could not
find my printer even though it was listed right there. In that case I just
pressed enter on the correct printer and it was back. What ever that last
update was it did a lot of unfriendly stuff.

Al,

I've been getting the number of emails and unread messages in the status bar
(insert-pagedown) for as long as I've had Outlook. As far as receiving and
sending, I find it varies. When I suspect there's been a long delay,
sometimes closing and reopening Outlook seems to stimulate it into
wakefulness again. As for messages reaching this list, once in a while my
post arrives almost immediately, but usually it takes a while, even an hour
or more. I believe the list's moderators have talked about this, and it's
undoubtedly a function of ISP servers.

Dave's response to your query adds a new wrinkle.

I realize this doesn't directly address the problems you've only recently
experienced, but maybe it puts them in context. By the way, is there really
an Outlook 14? I'm using Windows 7, JAWS 2018/18/17 and Outlook 16.

[JAWS-Users] Just curious -- anyone use Open Office?

2018-03-27 Thread JM Casey
Hey.

I know that in the corporate world, microsoft Office is the standard. A lot
of people have it at home, too, and it works well with JAWS and other
screen-readers. Unless you can get a good deal, though, it's not cheap to
get the full professional Office suite. There is at least one alternative:
Open Office, and while I have MS Office 2010 on this machine, I also have
Open Office, and I recently started playing with the word processor. It at
least seems very accessible and straightforward, and there are keyboard
shortcuts. I'm using version 4.1 I believe, and it's from 2016.
Interestingly, it has the old-style menu bar, and not ribbons. I think this
would make a lot of blind users quite happy. It will save documents in
various formats, including old Microsoft Word ones (going back to 2003 I
believe), for those who want compatibility with the Microsoft product, which
I suppose is pretty essential.

Just some basic thoughts for now. Just wondering if anyone uses it? It also
contains spreadsheet software, a presentation system that I guess is not
dissimilar to Powerpoint, a database program and something for drawing. No
e-mail client apparently. As yet, I am not sure how well any of these
programs work. Seems worth worth the test drive though.

My Outlook (and lots of other programs) started slowing down dramatically
yesterday. I have JAWS 2018 and Windows 7 32-bit Pro on a Dell Latitude. I
checked on system restore and saw that a Windows "critical update" was
installed the day before. I restored back to before that point (and it took
several hours) and now the system is clicking along beautifully. I've set my
Windows update to *not* update automatically and to ask me in advance which
to download and install. I'm hoping that I can somehow avoid getting that
nasty "critical update" installed in the future.

I have, the number of unread e-mails and this is a new addition in the past
couple of weeks, it says receive/send and of course at the end it says the
usual 10%.

Could this new addition of Send/Receive cause the problem in my Outlook
becoming so sluggish? I do not know what I may have pressed to cause this
problem. Can anyone give me a detailed fix to avoid this sluggish Outlook
problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

is set to English. The linked n jus tstarted a coupld of days ago. Why is
that?
How do I fix that?

Hi Denis,

In keyboards that follows the traditional layout, Scroll Lock is abobe the
Home key on the main or extended keyboard, that is, abobe the center of the
keyboard area that JAWS help names “the six pack”.
In some new keyboards and most laptops, location of this key varies between
manufacturers and models, and may even require to press also an FN
(Function) key.

Hope it helps!

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] volume short cut

Hi Holger,

Answers you were given are for quickly opening Volume Mixer, but they
actually don't change the volume.
In case your keyboard has no volume keys, JAWS provides two scripts,
IncreaseSystemVolume and DecreaseSystemVolume, that respectively raises or
lower the volume from any application, with no need to open any additional
window, and they announce the volume level to which you just set.
By default these scripts have no key assignment, but it is easy to map to a
convenient keystroke:
1. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS window or context menu, depending on your
setting.
2. Press ALT+U to open the Utilities menu or sub-menu, depending on your
setting.
3. Press K to open Keyboard Manager.
4. When Keyboard Manager opens, press TAB to move to the right pane, that
is, the one containing key mappings of the file selected in the left pane,
that should be Default if you launched Keyboard Manager as I indicated. If
you ran Keyboard Manager in a different way, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to make sure
you're working in the Default file instead of the one specific for the
application from which you opened Keyboard Manager.
5. In the list view, find the script whose name is DecreaseSystemVolume.
You'll find that it is not assigned to any key.
6. Press CTRL+A to add a keystroke to this script.
7. Press the keystroke you want to use to lower the volume. In my desktop
computer I use CTRL+SCROLL LOCK+DOWN ARROW.
8. Press ENTER, and choose OK in the confirmation dialog which appears.
9. You'll be returned to the list view of scripts. Do the same with the
IncreaseSystemVolume script, which you could assign to CTRL+SCROLL LOCK+UP
ARROW.
10. Close Keyboard Manager with ALT+F4.

Advantages of this method are that volume is changed on the fly with no need
to change the application, and it works even when you are on the Windows
Logon screen. As a disadvantage, these keystrokes don't work when you aren't
using JAWS or when you are in a program in which you configured JAWS to be
in Sleep Mode.

Hope it helps!

Looks like it's available for FF, but I'm not ready to go back to FF yet.
