2011-08-09 Thread Brandon Misch
i think the only reason it works for you is because you got it from fs. those
of us who got it from third party dealers will see that third party support
isn't included in jaws since jaws 10 original release.

On Aug 9, 2011, at 7:37 AM, Mike O'Brien wrote:

 Hi Doris

I had never heard anything about JAWS 10 being the last release to support
Dectalk Access 32. I run the Dectalk Access 32 version from Freedom
Scientific. I originally got it shortly after it came out in JFW v2 or v3.
I have successfully used it in all subsequent versions of JAWS including V11
and V12 under Windows 98, NT, 2000 and XP. I downloaded a new version of
Dectalk Access 32 back in the late 90's from the Freedom Scientific download
 page at
 http://www.freedomscientific.com/downloads/jaws/JAWS-previous-downloads.asp
And installed it several years ago. Look for the link New Dectalk Access
32 on that page to find it. Although I tried it today and I got no response
from left or right clicking the link. I mostly run it from the Startup
group in the Start menu. Although recently I have been trying having it
 start automatically.
In earlier versions of JAWS it seemed to me that JAWS was more responsive
and less choppy by running it from the Startup group rather than as a
service. But I really haven't noticed any difference between the two in the
latest JAWS release. I recently purchased a Netbook on which I did not want
an automatic logon to have JAWS after the Logon screen appears. So I
checked the box in Basic/Options to have JAWS start automatically for the
Logon Screen, which seems to take a long while after the logon screen
appears. I then created a DOS batch file that will stop the currently
running version of JAWS and start whatever version I specify. I have read
that GW Micro has dropped support for it. So although I haven't seen
anything about Freedom Scientific support, it wouldn't surprise me that it's
not supported by them either. The last technical Support Bulletins I have
seen on the Freedom Scientific support page about Dectalk Access 32 are for
it making OpenBook 8 crash on startup just because it is installed, and it
locking up JAWS under Windows Vista which mentions JAWS version 8.

Which version of DEC Access 32 are you using with jaws 12? All I heard

I researched that a while back and think I saw a message by someone saying

I'd be very much intersted in hearing which version of DEC Access (i.e. the

 ReleaseCandidate

 Hello JAWS List,

We have been working for months on an update for JAWS 12 which
 includes
a great deal of work in the area of IE 9, Excel, Java 64 bit, Visual
Studio, Thunderbird, and much more. At this time, we are in the
 process
of completing the final testing with the new MAGic Low Vision Keyboard
that is scheduled to start shipping in the next week or two along with
the MAGic 11 update. Once the testing is complete, the Automatic
 Updates
feature of JAWS will be turned on for this update and all JAWS 12
English users will get this 1158 build.

In the meantime, we wanted to take this opportunity for users to get
this build early if they would like so we have posted it as the
 Download
version on our web site. I have included the details of the changes in
the release below. I have provided the download links at the bottom of
 this message.

JAWS 12 Features and Enhancements as of April 2011

JAWS Support for New MAGic Large Print Keyboard

The MAGic Large Print Keyboard is a new accessory that contains extra
keys assigned to the most commonly used MAGic functions. Its large and
contrasting letters also make it easier to type and use MAGic hot
 keys.
Using the MAGic Keyboard Manager, you can assign different MAGic
functions to these keys. For example, if you do not use dual monitors,
you can change the Jump to Next Display key to any other feature item
 such as mute system sounds.

The keyboard also allows the assignment of shortcuts to keys. With a
shortcut, the keys can launch applications, open files on your
 computer
or in a network folder, or open a favorite Web site. For example, you
can assign the M1 key (available along the top of the MAGic Large
 Print
Keyboard) to open a document that you need to regularly access.

Another benefit is that you can use the keyboard with JAWS screen
reading software. Similar to MAGic, you can assign hot keys to JAWS
functions while also using the keyboard with or without running MAGic.
Note that when running the two applications together, the JAWS
functionality will override the MAGic functionality.

 Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 Support

JAWS 12 has been further enhanced for Internet Explorer 9 which is
available for users of Windows 7 and Vista. These enhancements include
Braille and the JAWS cursor being able to properly navigate and read
pages. Please note that with the release of Internet Explorer 9,
Microsoft has made significant changes which prevent commercial screen
magnification products from smoothing fonts as we had previously. If
font smoothing is important for users of MAGic on your computer, we
recommend that you remain with Internet Explorer 8 on your machine
 until
a solution has been worked out.

 Microsoft Excel Improvements

The interface to the Excel Object Model has been rewritten. You will
experience a more responsive and accurate interface to Excel.

 Visual Studio 2010 Professional Support

Visual Studio 2010 Professional is a development environment from
Microsoft that enables application developers to develop software
 using
a wide variety of languages including C++, C#, Visual Basic.net, and
more. JAWS 12 now provides robust support with both speech and braille
for various areas of the Visual Studio system, including:

 * IntelliSense, similar to auto completion, which gives
suggestions for what to type next based on what you have already
 entered
 * Editor Adornments such as bookmarks and break points
 * WPF and Forms Designers for laying out dialog boxes and other
 windows;

In Windows XP and earlier, you could down arrow, or up arrow thru the

In Windows 7, it is my understanding that the search box is at the top of

if this is true, why can't I down arrow in the start menu?
It would appear to me that down arrowing would move to the next item in

Hi so long as you have at least 2GB of RAM and a 2GHZ processor XP Mode
should run fine without problems. In the past hardware virtualization must
be supported and if so enabled in the computer's BIOS. But an update to
Virtual PC made this optional now and not manditory.

 Hi,
This has been discussed on the Windows 7 list. Unfortunately, it is
 not
possible to use JAWS in a Windows XP mode environment. Virtual PC
creates a terminal session by default, and JAWS doesn't understand
 that
it's not actually a terminal session; rather a virtual terminal
session created by Virtual PC. As a result JAWS thinks you're
 trying to
run it in a terminal session, and therefore will not work and instead
display an error message and quits. For the record, other screen
 readers
work, but this is outside the scopes of this list.
 Sorry about that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FW: JAWS. 11 update not working properly

2010-07-17 Thread Brandon Misch
this update doesn't have to do with jaws but a daisy book. mainly the tandom
daisy book. it gets downloaded and installed but even doing a check for updates
still brings up the book as if it isn't installed and fs reader shows the book
and you can still play it. that' the real trouble here. a book that is
installed but according to check for updates, it isn't. hope this explains the
real issue.

I was wondering if I could lower the setting until the games worked, they

Bit of a nuisance because a restart is required everytime I select the 0

Any ideas how I can get over this problem

Hi List,

Just to clarify, if you have downloaded and installed the JAWS 11
prior to October 23rd at 2:30 PM EST, then you can check for updates
in the Help Menu now, and you can get this update in that fashion.
If you're not sure you need it, you can just verify the version of
JAWS you have installed now in the about box, from the Help menu also.

The current relase with the security update included, is 11.0.734
which is also the only version available on the Download page now.
So, if you install from the web today for the first time, you are
all set. Also, I wanted to let you all know that the DVD that is
going to be shipping has been delayed a few days to make certain it
contains this newer build which contains the Security update. The
SMA shipments will start to go out by Thursday, October 29 once they
clear our testing lab and complete the production process. So anyone
who is installing from the DVD on 32 bit or 64 bit Windows should
continue to check for updates as always, but I wanted to be clear
that the security update is already included on your DVD.

If you go to the Help menu of JAWS and hit enter, you then down-
arrow to,
Check for Updates and hit enter. You then hit the spacebar on the
item

which will probably be at the top and says security update for JAWS
11.0.734. After you check it, you have to tab over to ok and hit the
spacebar. It will then start to download update with the clicking
sound.

You will have two more OK buttons, the last one being to restart your
computer.

i heard that there was more than just that that tyler found. i heard

Hi all.
Where can I download the dec talk software sinthesizer?

Yesterday, I listen in ACB radio Main Menu a review about dec talk,
and I was very amazed! and, the most cool for me, I'm a blind
musicion, and the most interesting feature for me is the option to
have dec talk to sing for us, so if I get it and someone can explain
me it, I should be very pleased.
once again, where can I download the Dec talk software? or someone
can

send me it? I found it in the Freedom scientific's download page, but
when I install it, I have a dialog saying that I need an older
version of JAWS to run the sinthesizer.
Thanks from Colombia, Latin America, ANdres

 Hi there listers.
I know this is probably and old program that none of you even use
 but here
 is my question.
My problem is this. When using ms chat 2.5, after a while of text
 is on
the screen, jaws will read a part of a sentence from other text

getting to the actual text at hand.
 What I mean is this.
 Let's say you write something like;

 much it
 will say:
 nothing much. Christy says hi.
Can I get a setting in either ms chat or jaws to not read prior
 parts of
sentences before the current one has been written?
 Thanks for any help..
 I am using jaws 09
 I mean 9.

 Hi Eric and listers,

I heard it that the end of this month FS will publish the first
 public
 beta of JAWS 10?
What will the 10th version have versus the 9th?
And why does FS every time the versions bring out the first 8, 9
 then 10
and not 9.5 or so? Every time the next version is out it costs
 always an
 SMA...

not really. anyone that was at the nfb convention got a sneak peak at
a few jaws 10 features. and if you listen to the May issue of fs cast,
Jonathan even mentions it while going over the summer schedule.

 Hi Eric and listers,

I heard it that the end of this month FS will publish the first
 public
 beta of JAWS 10?
What will the 10th version have versus the 9th?
And why does FS every time the versions bring out the first 8, 9
 then 10
and not 9.5 or so? Every time the next version is out it costs
 always an
 SMA...

i know a couple changes that will be major. well at least to people

well, there was one also at the nfb onvention but he didn't mention
anything about not revealing anything there. only found out 2 or 3
 things about jaws 10.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 9 Update

2008-07-23 Thread Brandon Misch
well, if you download the file from fs, you wouldn't have to update it
since the file from fs is the full version where the cd is the last
version of jaws9.0.2152 or in some cases, the first version and whitch
ever version you have on cd will need to be updated. Hope this helps.

Then use it for the initial install and then check for any updates.

That sounds like a plan unless you go and download the full
 version from
 Freedom Scientific directly.

I was wondering do I have to install Jaws 9 from the cd first
 before I
install the update for this version?

 Thanks,
