As the owner of this list often reminds us to first try ourselves to sort
out a problem; well I tried first then wrote and then tried again and found
the answer.

You are correct; it is Shift plus f10. I realised that after I've sent it.
But, thank you for the alternatives to this, much appreciated!!

Hi Derick,
It isnot Control + F10, it is Shift + F10.
You can also use Alt + Enter, or if you have an applications key, press it
to open a context menu, then up arrow to Properties and press enter.
Also, you can use the following keystrokes:
Alt + F for the File menu, then the letter R for properties.

Hello Derrick,

When you use the Open dialog box in Word you can tab to the headers area.
In Word 2013 it is just past the file list for what is chosen in the tree
structure. I am not sure for Word 2007 but it should be just after the list
of files or perhaps before it. When you find the headers use your right and
left arrow keys to move header to header. Find the Name choice and press
enter key. The Name header is likely the first header and if it is then
just press enter key to reverse the sort order according to that header.
You can use arrow keys to the various headers and press enter key to do the
type of sort you want for the list of files. It is dependent on what
headers you have set in Windows Explorer.

Take care.

fact is this list is active enough that for the most part it does not take
long for the next post to come across my desk at least.

GMail is known for not delivering a person's own post unless you make a

I must compliment the group for things have been running quite smoothly for

[JAWS-Users] Avast updates not speaking

2013-07-08 Thread DERICK GREEFF
Hi List

I run two computers; one with XP and JAWS 10 and one with Windows 7 and JAWS
13.

Both have the same version of Avast but the one on the windows XP machine
announces the daily updates and the windows 7 machine not.

I've checked that both machines receive the updates at the same time of the
day.

I've played around with the Windows 7 and JAWS 13 machine's verbosity
settings but this does not make any change so far. Does anyone perhaps know
what the reason can be that the windows 7 machine does not announce the
updates?

I don't know about your laptop, but on mine I was able to disable it by
going to the control panel, under devices, Mouse and Touchpad, I found a
choice to disable it. Then, wait until a sighted mouse-dependent person
wants to use your computer (grin).

I can't give you exact directions because I am not sure if Win 7 would have
the same layout as my Vista laptop, especially since I set up my Vista in
classic view.

Another alternative is to cut out a thin piece of cardboard and tape it over

the touchpad. You'd want to use something about the thickness of what they
use for sending stuff in mailers that they don't want to bend.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hi,

There is sometimes a function that will do this, for example, f6 on my

If someone is able to help you, you may be able to tell by the symbols on
the function key strip.
You could also Google the model number and see if there is anything
available there.
Failing this, you could disable the touchpad in the device manager.

Hi Derick,
On most, there is a keystroke for doing this, if you let us know what brand
you are using perhaps someone could help.
It is usually the F/N key in combination with one of the function keys, such

as:
F/N +F5
The keystroke is a toggle, so it works to enable or to disable.

Hi David

I think it now worked with FN plus F8. I initially thought it did not work
because JAWS did not announce anything except saying F8. But, now that
I've restarted the computer and did the FN F8 thing firstly, there is no
reaction when I swipe my finger over the touch pad; so it must work!!!

According to the documentation on my system FN f8 toggles the touch pad. I
notice from your original message that does not work, it does on mine
although you need to do it every time the system boots up.

I got mine in December of 2009 if that helps you at all.

I think it may be either the F8 key on its own or the FN Key +F8. It's a
toggle. I don't have it now, but the lenovo model i had access to didn't
have an easy way to disable it completely, so you had to disable it per

the shortcut for insert is alt-n.

It has nothing to do with the operating system in the terms of XP, Vista, or

Windows 7.

Maximum memory is determined by whether you have a 32-bit or 64-bit system
architecture. My guess is you have 32-bit because I think I've only seen
64-bit versions of XP in the Pro series. You can get Vista or Win 7 home
editions with 64-bit systems.

The maximum memory in a 32-bit system is calculated as 2 times the 32nd
power minus 1. You are basically limited to 4 GB, although in practicality,

Windows won't recognize more than about 3.5GB. 64-bit systems are almost
unlimited, I've seen 16GB and I am sure you could theoretically get more but

don't know of any that have any more than that.

Whether a downoad manager is the better solution over using a full
ftp client is a matter of opinion and a matter of how ftp is accessed
and used.

if ftp is also used for uploads, a full native ftp client is the
better solution usually.

I prefer using a native ftp client when I access ftp sites as it will
not only resume downloads but uploads as well and is usually more
configurable than a download manager.

Firefox works fine with JAWS10. It's an either/or situation re: Web

Interestingly, I was just having a conversation about spam and harvesting
of email addresses, just the other day.

One function that is available in the email specification that most people
do not know about, and even some email clients won't support is the
extended address. You can put a plus sign between your ID and the at
sign. And then you can put anything you want between the plus sign and at
sign. Most email clients will just accept the information between the
plus and at, and ignore it.

Why is this useful? You can use that information to more easily filter
incoming spam, or see just who has sold your email addi to the spammers.

For example, say I am leaving my address on some blog site, because it
requires an email address to leave a comment or something. I can put in,
as my address.

dr25+blogcomm...@andrew.cmu.edu

If I ever get an email from somewhere and the To address is
dr25+blogcomm...@andrew, I know where they got the address from.

Or, say I want to make use of a one time coupon or something on a web
site, but know they will start sending me crap every week, stuff that I
don't want. I can sign up on the site with an email address of
dr25+nos...@andrew.cmu.edu and then create a rule in my email client that
says, anything with a To address of dr25+NoSpam, or even just anything
with NoSpam in the To header, just delete it.

It doesn't always work because some web sites won't accept the extended
address, or they are smart enough to remove any extended part of the
address when they spam you. Never-the-less it can be helpful.

To add this web site to your list
I do:
go to the internet and open the new site
While there I hold alt and tap a for add to favorites
Jaws will read the site and if this is agreeable for the name
Just hit enter
If you wish to change the title for any reason
then you can do that too.
For other options, you can tab through the list
Also, favorites may be on the menu bar as well but I find this a tad too
long.
Now let's say it is another time and now you are on the home page, you would

also tap the alt and a keys to bring up the favorites so up arrow to your

Hope this helps

Derick,

that 'little detail' cannot be physically (or 'tactually') known at the
time, due to non-proportional spacing, font sizes and font point sizes,
whether bolding or underlining or italics are being used, until the
cantered heading or text has been completed. You still have the
'template' of how this was formerly done, so use that as a frame of
reference or guide and trust that it, too, solves the foreseeable
problems. The printed characters are smaller than theyr former
typewritten equivalents, but the non-proportional spacing negates that
to some degree, at least in my understanding of it (which may, of
course, be flawed!) There are also margin settings in text editors and
in our word-processing programs. And for 'typing' in general now, in the
JAWS - application and/or default - Configuration manager (Set Options
Text Processing dialogue), JAWS has four Indicate newLines When:
checkboxes that may be used.

 Hi Flor

Now you see that is exactly what I meant by getting more
 complicated.

In the early days of learning typing on a manual typewriter (giving
 away my

 cursor is
standing once text has been centred. It says the number of the column
 as
one although it is somewhere in the line. It is this position I
 would like
to determine. I've tried all the commands provided for making sure
 that it
is indeed centred (it all works like a charm) but knowing on what
 column in
the line the first letter of the centred text is is still a mystery to
 me.
So, in fear of the moderator closing this subject I should rather just
believe that it is centred according to all the JAWS commands telling
 me so
and forget what the column number in that line is where the centred
 text
 starts or stops.

I think we are so spoilt with JAWS allowing us to know every little
 detail
on the screen that it is difficult for me to accept that this one I
 will not
 know.

non-proportionate fonts, which are standard, making such points less
relevant. It'll all come out fine in the printout - or, visually, the
 Print Preview.

So, for a verbal or surface understanding, let's use a typewriter and
insert a sheet of A4 paper where a full line might be 60 or 65
characters in width (depending on margin settings, particularly the
right margin), and subtract the number of characters in the centred
 text
from 65 and then divide the remainder by two, allowing for one more
space to the right if the centred text has an odd or even number of
characters - depending on what the margin settings are. thus, where
 the
right margin was half-an-inch (5 spaces), the left margin 1 inch (10
spaces), you have 65 spaces (or 6.5 inches) width to play with on an
 A4
standard sheet of paper. If the centred text is 20 characters, it will
start from a position 22 spaces in from the left margin. (this is how
 we
 used to do things.)

Re: [JAWS-Users] Centering text and JAWS

2010-10-14 Thread DERICK GREEFF
Hi Lennie,

Thank you very much. This alt plus delete gives me the measurements and
position of the active cursor and is a great help for determining the
position of the text. Is there a way in which one can determine the column
number at which centred text starts?

Thanks for all the help from the JAWS users!!!

Hi,

To find the measurements from the left on a centered line press
Alt+Del keys. The delete key is next to the insert key on the NumPad
and numlock is off.

The instruction of control plus the letter E works to center text but the

character of the text is on column one and not where it actually is.

So Thus Column 1 tells you only that you are on the first column of text,
not your position in the actual line. But how do I then determine where
this text is situated in a particular line in the indicator only tells me
that I'm on the first column of the text; I thought this was going to be
simple but it gets more complicated!!!

Just as a blank line in a document is not a line filled with blanks,
centered text is not blanks plus text plus blanks. A line space
indicator is a single character, and a centering indicator is
likewise a single character. Thus Column 1 tells you only that you
are on the first column of text, not your position in the actual line.

Stinks, doesn't it?

Are you talking about centering text so that it appears in the middle of the

page or are you referring to heading styles used to organize text?

If you just want to center it, the control E instructions others have given
will work.

If you want to organize things into different levels of headings, that's
under a different menu option I'd have to go look up. I've got Word 2003,
but I don't use that option very often.

Jewel,
I had to tell you that I tried this and it works perfectly.
1. I paused the MP3
2. I pressed control K and tabbed to the left-right slider. I up/down
arrowed
3. I pressed control P to start the Mp3 playing again
4. To my surprise, during the playing, I could up/down arrow to find where I
had left off so easily. If I moved up in the count, the voice started
talking at this point.

Jewel, great way. Thanks again!

Rus! I don't know if you have had a definitive reply to your question, but
I have one idea that
will work.
Pause the audio and then press k for the seek to feature. You will be
told how much time has
elapsed. If you want to go back or forward, tab to the hour, minute and
seconds fields: delete the
elapsed time, and type in the one you want.
For instance: say the elapsed time is 1 hour 31 minutes 15 seconds, and you
want to relisten to a
segment that you estimate may have been five minutes ago: delete the 31
minutes and replace it with
26, and then tab down to seek to and restart the audio file.
There may be other ways of doing it, but I can guarantee that the one I have
outlined will work.

Hi Everyone,

I was listening to a downloaded training MP3 file. I wanted to move ahead
and at times repeat by moving back.

I found that control, P paused the playing of the MP3. I have not found how
to fast forward or replay a segment.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS keystrokes for changing volume on a loaded GoldWave file

2010-03-25 Thread DERICK GREEFF
Hi,

I use Jaws 10 with GoldWave 5.24 but cannot find any menu item in GoldWave
allowing me to change the volume of a previously recorded file now loaded on
GoldWave.

Somewhere I read in an article that changing the total volume of an already
recorded file is indeed possible, but just cannot find the correct
information. I am now not so sure whether the information is there but that
I cannot reach it with JAWS.

Is there perhaps some GoldWave and JAWS user that can help?

Derick,

Pull down the effects menu (alt-c)
Select the volume submenu by arrowing to it or pressing the letter u.

The first choice on this menu is change volume.
