Re: [JAWS-Users] Replacement for AVG

2008-05-10 Thread Jewel Blanch
Some weeks ago, someone wrote in recommending an anti virus program that, I
think, is called avir.
I kept the message, but unfortunately, in the interim, it has been lost.
If anyone knows more about avir, could they please let us know.

Hi Jewel,
Well, do you recall that foreign languages
such as French and Spanish have accent marks
on some characters? This grav accent key is
used to type an accented letter. For
exapple, to type e acute (or e acccht), first
press Grav then type e.
Cheers,
Joseph

Someone was asking the other day about an easy and accessible online
 dictionary. Today I came
across one of the fastest and easiest ones that I have ever seen. You can
look up one word at a
time or multiple words if you need to. If you are looking up more than
one word at a time, simply
put a comma between each word. The link for the online dictionary is:

 www.NinjaWords.com

If anyone has any questions about the program, feel free to contact me off
 list since this is not
 actually a JAWS related issue.

Thanks Flor! I will try your suggestions. It will not be long before I say

My donated grain count on free rice is 9. Time permitting, I try to do
1000 grains a day.
Until a while back, the best vocab level you could achieve, no matter how many
words you got right
was 50, but that level has been raised now, but so has the range of words and
their difficulty and
obscurity. My best level, to date, is 54, but one mistake and you slip back a
level, and, it takes
more than one correct word to regain it.
I enjoy pitting my wits against the site.
I spoke of jaws making a pretty good fist of pronunciation, with not many
exceptions, but just wait
until the site gives you the french word for an armchair! I should switch
language to french and
see what it makes of the pronunciation of fauteuil then!

Jewel,

Unfortunately, with that version of JAWS, you may not be able to get the
pronunciation to play. (It is a 'clickable graphic'. In short, perhaps not
a standard clickable link as recognized by earlier versions of JAWS. You
could however try turning on all graphics using the insert+5 keys, that
number 5, to attempt to enable it?. (There was also a graphics verbosity -
insert-v, the down-arrow or the letter g.) With conntemporary versions of
JAWS, when you hit left-mouse once on the 'clickable graphic pronounce', The
word is spoken in a human voice. Nice site and nice game.

The freerice.com site has, from time to time, new features added to it, the
latest of which is pronunciation. I imagine that the correct pronunciation
of the, sometimes, very strange words that appear on the site is given in
foenetics. The choices of words can be clicked on, but this does not seem
to be so with the pronounce feature. Jaws just says: graphics pronounce
. To give Jaws the credit it deserves, it, generally, makes a very good
fist of getting the correct pronunciation, but sometimes, it does get a
little confused, especially if the word is from a language other than
standard english and I cannot blame it for that!
Back to graphics pronounce I tried finding it by turning on the jaws
cursor, but as I am not very adept at using the jaws cursor, I could not
find out how to pronounce the word.
Any suggestions please!

Blanch, [or should that be Blanche grin] I've heard Eloquence' French
language and, even to a non-native language student, the French sounds not
good! (I contrast that with how I find the Italian Eloquence pronunciation
of Italian, not perfect but pretty good.) That's where the human
pronunciation helps, to be sure. I enjoyed my first hour or two at the site
today, and am at level 49! I use an Apollo 2 synthesizer with JAWS, which
is british speech.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Finding Sounds For Your Computer

2007-12-05 Thread Jewel Blanch
Several years ago, I downloaded a 15 day free trial version of find sounds,
and what do you know, they forgot about me and I continued to download
sounds, free of charge, from the site for a year or more.
I, eventually, had over 600 sounds, and then my hard drive died and, of
course, took all my sounds and everything else with it to the grave!
When I was, once again, in the land of the living, and went to find sounds,
the 15 day free trial had been cancelled. I couldn't really complain! I
had had a great time while it lasted.
I now have downloaded the latest 15 day free trial v2.2, but I cannot get it
to work. It is different to the one I knew in that there is a box that
says:
effects: 1 of 3, instruments: 2 of 3 and other: 3 of 3.
I open any one of the three with the right arrow key, but that is where I
get stuck. Pressing the enter key or tad down just results in a ding.
operating system: 98SE and JFW4.51.

 Hi all,
Don't know what you all think of this, but how about we change the way
we reply to messages. Instead of replying to the list directly, why not
facilitate it so that by default we reply to the sender only and that if
we wish to reply to the list we use the reply to all option? I'm on a
list where this facility is used. What do you all think? I'd love to
 hear from you. Thanks!

I just had a thought about this problem. I wonder if the material in that
site is put through one of those universal translators. This is a program
which takes text in any language just about and converts it to other
languages on the fly so to speak. The World Science site is visited by
people all over the planet. It may be sophisticated enough to recognize
the
visitor's location and translate the text accordingly. The Universal
Translator breaks words up into smaller increments as it is translating.
Then, the word is reassembled on the printed page. Why it does this, I
have
no idea but FedEx uses similar technology in their sites and you wouldn't
believe some of the odd results. Anyway, Jaws might be seeing some of
those
hidden processing notations and reacting. Now, how can we get it to
ignore
things like your hidden messages and other text processing functions.
Have
you tried doing a screen shot and then saving it to Word or one of the
other
 text handling programs?
Maybe, in the translation, the hidden separators would be lost.

 Hi:

My husband says that visually the web page, http://www.world-science.net
looks normal. I think that JAWS is seeing graphics that aren't visible,
even though it can't decipher them. At work, I use to see strange words
like Franchise and Cisco when they weren't visible to the sighted. They
couldn't figure out what in the world I was talking about when I
inquired about them. Sometimes when I log onto Windows at work I see
something that says tray tab, and my computer goes super slow. I end up
rrebooting, but nobody can see this thing, and so they don't know what
 it is to correct it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Query How to fix strange reading

2007-07-09 Thread Jewel Blanch
I wrote in some time ago telling of how Jaws read news items on the world
science site in a very odd manner. Words of one or two syllables were ok,
but longer than that, Jaws attempted to break them up into individual
syllables.
Flor Lynch asked for the url, and I have not, until now, been able to get
back to the computer with that information.
It is: www.world-science.net.

For the past few months, Jaws reading of news items on the World Science
site has been most peculiar. It reads 50% of the words just fine, but the
rest it breaks up into syllables.
I am getting quite good at interpretting what it is reading, but I would
much rather have the article read in plain english, not a strange version
of
 it.
There was a question the other day on this list re hidden hyphens. I
didn't
know if these were being inserted as, if I copy the article to MsWord, and
look at the word in detail, I am not told that there is a hidden hyphen.
Nevertheless, I went through search and replace as if they were there, but
the program said that the search item could not be found.
Is there anyone else on the list who gets the world science newsletter and
has the same problem, and if so, how did you fix it?
