[JAWS-Users] Seeking help with digital signatures

2017-09-02 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hello,

I seem to be unable to figure out how to create, let alone insert, a
signature into a pdf file.

I am using Jaws 17 on Windows 7 and Acrobat DC.

Any guidance someone can offer would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Michelle

[JAWS-Users] Accessibility of Google Hangouts

2014-01-27 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi all,

I was just wondering if the experts among you had come across any tricks to
make Google Hangouts less of a chore. So far I am only able to use it
through the Chrome extension. I can respond to chats that people initiate
with me, but can't see lists of whose available or begin chats of my own.
This, as you can imagine, is limiting. Are there clients out there that take
the hassle out of this process? Scripts I should be using? Anything? Any and
all suggestions are welcome, both for this and other Google products (docs,
groups, etc).

Many thanks and all the best,

Michelle

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and Thunderbird - am I missing something?

2012-08-25 Thread Michelle McQuigge

Hi all,

After my recent conversion to Windows 7, I found myself underwhelmed
with Outlook 2010 and decided to make the switch to Thunderbird. Since
every blind person and their brother seemed to be using it, I thought
I'd find it fairly seamless when it comes to accessibility. So far that
has not been the case. I can make use of it reasonably well, in fact I'm
composing this message in it as we speak, but I find the program a lot
less intuitive and a little more sluggish with Jaws than previous
incarnations of Outlook were. Replying to messages is a trial, since
Jaws won't always read me the message I'm typing and will focus on
details like variable width instead. If I press enter to open a
message, there's a good 10-second lag before I can actually start
reading it. This program is eliminated if I view the message using f6
instead of enter, but that really isn't my preference. The list goes on.

Is this just a case of me needing to adjust my expectations, suck it up
and adapt to an unfamiliar program with less convenient hot keys, or is
there some Jaws-related magic bullet I'm overlooking? Is there a script
that one should download for optimal results? A setting or two I should
tweak? Any and all advice welcome.

Best,
Michelle

P.S. If there is a way to redefine the function of certain hot keys, I'd
be beyond happy if someone could enlighten me. :)

[JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch

2012-08-22 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi all,

I've finally made the leap from Windows xp to Windows 7, and not a
moment too soon. The transition has been fairly smooth apart from the
whole virtual ribbon scene, but I have encountered one glitch I could
use some guidance on.

I have opted to have set a password for logging onto Windows. Jaws
will announce itself ready for action after the windows music sounds,
but won't always focus properly on the password field of the login
screen. Sometimes it will simply say logon dialog without allowing
me to type anything into it. Other times it will go straight there and
all will work perfectly. What strikes me is odd is that Jaws will then
announce itself as ready a second time once I have managed to log in
successfully. Is there a setting I should know about to eliminate this
issue?

Also, just wanted to confirm my suspicion that jaws works infinitely
better when the user account control is set to 0...is that right?

Many thanks for your help,
Michelle

Re: [JAWS-Users] Pausing a video in You Tube

2012-03-18 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Ann, try hitting the letter B while on the page for your video. That should
cycle you through the various buttons available. Pause should come up in
that list as you scroll through.
If not, try the accessible youtube interface I mentioned yesterday:
tube.majestyc.net. It's not as stable as the main site, but they call it
accessible for a reason. :)

Re: [JAWS-Users] pausing a video pausingRE: Pausing a video in YouTube

2012-03-17 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi List,

Allow me to offer two suggestions.

On the main youtube site, one way to search for buttons is to press the
letter b repeatedly. This will cycle you through the various options. Once
you've found pause, just hit space bar.

However, there is also an accessible interface for youtube the can be
operated using keyboard shortcuts. It's fairly stripped down compared to the
main site, but I've found it works well and it may be right up someone's
alley.
The url is: tube.majestyc.net

Unlike the main Youtube site, your video won't begin playing automatically
once you've searched for and selected it. To start it, you can either hunt
for the very clearly labelled play button or simply hit alt-z. This same
command will pause the video once it's playing. Alt-x will back up 15
seconds, alt-c will move forward the same amount of time.

Hope this helps,
Michelle

heading I am adding to the page called Shortcuts. Rick has started compiling
a list of icons to drop you in to various places on your system quickly

Presently it is not a long list but with time and possibly some other folks

[JAWS-Users] Stymied by Filezilla

2012-01-14 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi all,

I am genuinely confused by something that's happening with FileZilla. I've
used it successfully in the past to transfer a number of files to and from
an ftp site, but today something odd is happening. IN my experience the only
way to upload a file is to arrow to the file name, route the Jaws cursor to
the PC one, then right click using jaws keystrokes and select the
appropriate option. This worked fine just a few weeks ago, but today I find
nothing happens when I go through this sequence of keystrokes. Jaws simply
says right click but doesn't seem to execute the command. I'd welcome any
suggestions for a workaround. For what it's worth, I'm running jaws 12 on
windows XP.

 Subject: [JAWS-Users] Stymied by Filezilla

 Hi all,

I am genuinely confused by something that's happening with
 FileZilla.
 I've
used it successfully in the past to transfer a number of files to
 and
 from
an ftp site, but today something odd is happening. IN my experience
 the only
way to upload a file is to arrow to the file name, route the Jaws
 cursor to
the PC one, then right click using jaws keystrokes and select the
appropriate option. This worked fine just a few weeks ago, but
 today
 I
 find
nothing happens when I go through this sequence of keystrokes. Jaws
 simply
says right click but doesn't seem to execute the command. I'd
 welcome any
suggestions for a workaround. For what it's worth, I'm running jaws
 12
 on
 windows XP.

 Many thanks,
 Michelle

Re: [JAWS-Users] Twitter's new webpage design, please help

2012-01-02 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi Melissa,
I ran into similar issues earlier and ultimately gave up on the web page
completely. My sollution was to finally begin using a twitter client, which
honestly has made me engage with the social medium in ways I never did
before. I am still using Qwitter, despite the fact that it is no longer in
development. It's working beautifully for me, and I intend to stick with it
until other accessible alternatives, such as Twitmonger, have come out of
the Alpha phase.
Best of luck,
Michelle

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Twitter's new webpage design, please help

Good morning friends. It has been awhile since I've bothered to play around
with Twitter, primarily resulting from a lack of free time. One thing I've
noticed since they've changed their webpage layout, is the lack of
accessibility to accomplish certain tasks that used to be simple. For
example, I would like to accept or decline a request to follow, but those
buttons are now completely useless.
I have tried getting around this issue via Twitter for IPhone, but to no
avail, as that app doesn't even have a way to view and accept or decline
requests.
Does anyone have any suggestions for navigating this issue? I'd be very
greatful.
Kind and warm thanks,
Melissa

 Hey all,

Caveat: I have not yet installed Qwitter. I know I need to do this. I
will do so when I get home from work. :)

My question has nothing to do with the twitter app, however, and
everything to do with the web interface. I work as a journalist and
have to rely on Twitter for information sourcing from time to time. I
would rather not install apps on my office computer, and therefore I
generally explore the site through my web browser. In the past I've
had minimal problems doing this. Retweets and replies were annoying
and required some jaws cursor time, but other controls such as the
follow button on a user profile were easily visible and instantly
responsive. Now, though, I think Twitter has fallen in step with
Facebook in implementing inherently inaccessible layout changes. No
matter what profile I visit, I can't find a follow button anywhere. I
see something that looks like it may work, but if I select it with
either Enter or the space bar, I get sent somewhere else altogether.
Ditto for routing the Jaws cursor to its PC counterpart and clicking
that way. I'd love input from anyone out there who has managed to get
 to the bottom of this.

Many thanks and all the best,
 Michelle

[JAWS-Users] Selecting files in Filezilla

2011-09-17 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi all,

I'm using Filezilla for the first time and have encountered an odd problem.
I've gotten connected no problem and managed to download a batch of files
from the site I'm working with. When it's time to upload files, however, I
run into an issue. I select files to upload, either individually or in
batches, I right-click using the Jaws cursor, and am told that upload
isn't available. No option seems to be available, in fact, other than to
create a folder in my local directory. It's almost as if the files aren't
selecting properly. I've tried hitting space bar on them, selecting them
using shift+ arrow-keys, and nothing seems to work. Has anyone encountered
this issue before? Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. This
includes alternative ways of uploading files using this program, if such
exist.

Thanks a lot,Michelle

Alan and Doris,

Thanks for this recommendation -- the voices are indeed fantastic, and the
price is sure right. :) I've downloaded one of the voices to try out, but am
not sure what to do from here. I don't see the option showing up in the
voice profiles menu, for instance. Any further guidance would be much
appreciated.

Hello Friends,
I have found the realspeak solo Direct voices that Freedom Scientific has
to offer absolutely free on their web site really fantastic.
You can download as many as you wish, and I have in my collection both the
American and English voices.

Once you adjust the speed and other options to your particular taste, I
think you will find them really great.

However for important work and such I still use Eloquence.

Before you decide to invest, check out the realspeak solo voices up on

only with jaws. you might find some that you like.

Hi Don,

Yes, I downloaded the Solo versions direct from the FS website, and
everything is working beautifully. I noticed the Caps issue, as well as the
fact that the Realspeak voices don't interpret punctuation marks as well as
Eloquence does. Still, it's nice to have some alternatives in place. Thanks
again!

Make sure you have the Solo versions. The other Real Speak voices with the
same names are also available as SAPI5 voices. The Solo versions talk
directly to JAWS and are much more responsive. There is a entry in the JAWS
menu (Insert + j) Help Web Resources Real Speak Solo direct download
page, where you get these voices.

There are several down sides to these great sounding voices (I like the
Karen voice with the Australian accent). These voices can not go nearly as
fast and they are not capable of raising the pitch to indicate capitals. I
(and probably many others) complained to Freedom Scientific about this. At
the time they had removed the capability to indicate upper case by saying
Cap. They listened. Now this can be done in the Speech and Sounds Scheme
Manager. Their audio tutorial (actually a FS DAISY file on the Speech and
Sound Schemes walks you through setting up upper case notification this way
as an example.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Tagging notes on Facebook

2011-08-08 Thread Michelle McQuigge
I discovered another alternative while playing around with it myself. This
technique only works on the main Facebook site, not on the mobile version.

When updating a status, enter the AT symbol, then start typing the person's
name. Type as much of it as you need to identify the person. For instance,
say you're tagging me, but you're also friends with someone named Michelle
McDonald. Type @Michelle McQ, then hit tab. Return to the what's on your
mind field, either by exiting forms mode or by hitting shift tab. The name
of the tagged person should be there, and you can simply continue typing
your update. I'm not 100% sure this system works when tagging notes, but I
suspect it would get the job done.

Kim, downloading a version from Blindsea.com improved the experience for me.
They provide thorough disclosure about which versions are partially
accessible, which is the best we can hope for with that program. I've been
able to use it enough to get my work done, though. Just be prepared to use
the Jaws cursor a lot. The menu bars are accessible, which helps, and you
can access many of the primary functions like backup, update software etc
just by doing a right single click on the program from the system tray.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and Nokia PC Suite

2011-08-06 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi all,

Some years ago I installed Nokia PC Suite on my computer, only to find it
most inaccessible. I don't recall which version of the program I was using,
but I was certainly using windows XP and some antiquated version of Jaws. My
updated Nokia phone is now crying for a backup, and I'm wondering if I'll
encounter similar problems when I reinstall PC Suite on my current laptop.
I'm still on Windows XP, but now using Jaws 12. Any tips or first-hand
anecdotes would be most welcome.

Many thanks,

Hi Patti. If you are referring to the latest youtube to mp3

 a
few days ago.
Jaws doesn't seem to read the options as well as it did in the last
version. When you tab through the options? After pasting in the URL
of the youtube video you want to convert. There is a list. In which
you can choose the format to which you want to convert the video
into. I notice now, you can choose between: OG, Wave, MP4 and MP3.
Perhaps, you have it set to MP4? and this is causing your trouble?

 Take care

It generally means a one-time only occurrence, in this case a payment. I'm
not familiar with this particular program or application, so don't know for
certain that the payment structure works that way, but that's certainly how
I interpret it.

Jaws works quite well with postbox.
I think the cost is a one off.

It will also import your mail account settings from other programs so it
should be easy to set up.

 Hi David,
Even if I remove the period at the end of your link, internet explorer
can not display the web page.
Have you been to the site recently?

Is this an annual kind of a deal or a one time expense? Also what is the
price? I have never heard of the service or program which ever the case
 might happen to be.

I would like to ask if anyone has used a program called postbox.com.
 I
do not like windows live mail any more than I liked outlook or
 thunderbird.

I went to the postbox web site but unless you have paid for the program
 customer service is unavailable.

You'll probably get a dozen answers to this question but the first thing
 off
the bat is, does your friend use Jaws? If he does, okay. If not, you
 have
inadvertently posted to the wrong list since this group deals with how
 Jaws
works with other programs or with problems arising out of using jaws.
There David. That's one long e-mail you won't have to write.
Ms. Miller, I can recommend several e-mail programs that will work with
 Jaws
 and Windows 7.
Please e-mail me off list however, if your friend doesn't use Jaws.
