Hi Steward.

Do you have set up your Jaws, so it is running from the system tray, and
not is available as a separate window?
This should give the ability to switch between the desktop and other
active window's, using alt+tab.

Hi Fanus,
I use Windows Mail on my Windows 7 machines, and have had no problems with
it.
It looks like Outlook Express for the most part,
and works with Jaws just fine.
Although it isn't set as the default e-mail client in Windows 7,
it can be activated for use by following the instructions that David has

Hi Stewart,

Personally I have no idea why Jaws is saying desktop twice. On my
computers

Jaws says desktop only 1 time but, as far as not going directly to the
desktop when starting, that happens to me all the time. It will go
directly

to the desktop then, it starts landing on the start button or the clock.
When it does this, I tab 1 time Alt + tab 1 time that puts me on the
desktop. 1 other thing to try is press the windows key + D, see if that
will put you on the desktop. I know this doesn't explain why your
computer

is doing what it is doing, but I'm just letting you know that you are not
the only one that has this unexplainable crap happen to them! I guess
Doctor Phil ain't such a bad idea afterall!LOL LOL

Take care.

Hi Stewart,

It sounds like Outlook took over as your default email client, according
to

the error message that you posted. Below are the steps that Flor Lynch
posted on how to correct the problem.

From: Flor Lynch

Seeing as you're using outlook Express in nrormal email, try this: Close
outlook Express. IMPORTANT: close Outlook or anything in outlook that
may be running. Go into Control panel; Internet Options; then shift+tab
and then right-arrow along to the Programs tab. press the tab key into
the dialogue. You come to the email programs combo box. Choose outlook
Express from the list by highlighting it, tab through the dialogue, and
press spacebar or enter on the OK button to make the change. You should
then - doing what you're doing - be enabled to send mail via outlook
Express from My Documents.
Flor

Hope this takes care of the problem. If it doesn't, let us know. Take
care.
Mike

what do ya not understand?
You copy something into a folder lkie say your public folder, once DB
indicates it's in the folder through your system tray where all files up
to date say, then you can send a link of that copied file in an email to
someone.
or you can go to db web site and create a folder that you and someone else
can share, that part retty easy to do on creating a folder, give it a
name, type in person/persons email addresses you want to share the folder
with and send it. They get an email to accept the shared folder and it
shows in their list of folders of the db program same as it will on your
list.
So they drop stuff into the shared folder, db uploads it from their pc to
yours or visa versa, when that's done and it tells ya in your all files up
to date, then you can copy or cut that item from the shared folder and put
it whreever ya wanna to on your pc.

yes, that's right, you have to put it in the public folder to send as a
link, but if your sharing a folder why whould you want to send it as a
link?
they just grab it out of your shared folder same as you do, the people who
do not share with you, they get the links through the public folder.

Hi

If you have your keyboard set to the Laptop configuration, the procedures
are the same except the JAWSkey is the capslock instead of the insert. On
another list, people are reporting that Facebook appears to be broke and
none of the links work whether or not you are using JAWS.

Hi Stewart;

Try this to see if sounds are turned on in Forms mode in the configuration
manager.
1. Press jaws key, + 6 on the number row to open the configuration
manager.

2. Control, shift, + D, to open the default configuration manager.
3. Alt + S, to open the Set Options menu.
4. Arrow down to Forms, press enter or, just press the letter F, after
opening Set Options.
5. Tab once or twice to, Forms mode indication Use Sounds if this box is
checked, press the spacebar to uncheck it.
6. Tab to okay, press enter, control + S, to save changes, if any were
made,

 Alt + F4 to close.

Hope this helps. Take care.

I am either a full or an old softy, either way it's back on. Oh get this
people the guy who dared me to ban him from this list didn't want to be
removed from the other list. Guess what boys and girls it doesn't work that
way around here. I had intended to turn it back on tomorrow probably some
time but after a few heart felt requests I decided to do it a little early.

I really hope that I won't have to do this again. Now everybody play nice
and try to get along with program. I thank you in advance for your

Hello!

One big problem is, if Avast finds something, the system locks and
without sighted help I cannot choose to ignore or quarantene the File in
wich avast has found something. I don't like MSSE, because I have the
feeling that it slows my computer down more than avast does, but at
least I can do all my tasks myself without sighted help.

And, Avast has deleted mails because Avast did find something in it. The
problem is, there was nothing to find. It was just a text file from a
german computer magazine that Avast has falsely identified as a virus.
So, how useful can a AV program be, if it does not let me have the final
decision? No, I don't like MSSE, but it does, what it should be doing
and is much more accessible than the latest Avast 5.

Just my opinion.

Regards!
Kamil

Avast's removal process has vastly improved from version 4.8, can you
positively state its not better than MSEE if you haven't tried their
latest version? if you have, then that's just your opinion, its
enough for me that i have to use microsoft's software for daily
tasks, i'll refrane from using their anti virus packages as well
purely because if they do inadvertantly break something which they're
almost certainly bound to do at some point just like they've done in
the past, then i'm not being lumbered with an unnecissary problem.
Avast has got me out of quite a few holes that many other anti-virus
checkers haven't been able to, i spend my time testing various
checkers this is what i base my opinions on, and user feedback as
well. As i said i don't wish to become involved in a debate, each to
his own if you're happy with what you use then good for you.

To say Avast has gone out of its way to make its anti-virus program

than it was previously, but it is still not as blind friendly as
MSE. If Avast really wanted to make its program blind friendly, they
would make it easy to remove without having to jump through hoops.
In some cases, you need to reboot into safe mode to completely
remove it, which is impossible without sighted help. How blind
friendly is this? That's why I never considered Avast for my
anti-virus program of choice. Until someone can produce test results
demonstrating that it is clearly superior to MSE at malware
detection, I'll stick with the latter.

In my opinion yes, alot more people are using it as opposed to
microsoft security essentials. I just don't like to put all my eggs
in 1 basket, and avast have gone out of their way to make their
products accessible for the blind, and in my opinion any company
that takes the time out for the blind especially for a free product
deserves respect.

Hi All.

Thanks to roger for tipping me off about this! Avast 5.0.594 now seems to
be fully accessible with screen readers. progress bars are now spoken, as
well as all of the interface. scans are now read out in realtime as they
should be, providing the user with information you'd probably have had to
use the jaws curser for. pressing tab and shift tab seems to be sufficient
to navigate, in other words using standard navigational keystrokes gets
you to the information you want to reach. the only flaw i've noticed is
the settings dialogue, for screen reader users its read out correctly, but
the tabs aren't immediately noticeable. you have to press space on the
settings button, then tab, then shift tab until jaws doesn't say anything
when shift tab is pressed e.g tab, gaming mode. shift tab, gaming mode
settings. shift tab. when jaws says shift tab only, scrole up twice with
the arrows and this should get you to where the tabs are, from there you
have access to over 10 different tabs to finely customize avast settings
including the look, sounds, scans, etc.

feeling brave? most of you will already have the opportunity to update via
the program interface its self, rightclick your avast icon, click on
update, then program update. but for those of you that have not got it
installed or don't want to use the system tray method, here's a download
link to the free anti virus program. it is not necissary to install the
chrome web browser, so click no when you are asked to install.

The other program which is real nice, runs in the background unnoticed, is

Hi. That's fair enough, I've tried many sollutions trend micro, AVG,
avast, Nod32, bit defender, etc etc. Avast is good for me because
customers want a free alternative and normally install their own
anti-virus anyway, but alot of blind people i know use Avast mostly
through choice as far as i'm aware. I'm not saying its definitively the
best, but it keeps most viruses at bay or has done on many pc's i've used
it on. I just thought i'd write to the people at avast so they were aware
of the issues being encountered, and post here for reference.

All the best,

A warning though about the latest version of Utorrent: it doesn't
allow you to select which files you want when using Jaws. Email me off
list if you want a more accessible version.

On 6/28/09, Derek Roberts bigd.vi@gmail.com wrote:

you downloaded. By that I mean keep the file, it's the actual program you

Estelita,

The Customize dialogue has three pages, and it sounds like you've come
in on the Toolbars page. Try pressing Ctrl + Tab to move to the Commands
page. This dialogue is unlike almost any other, in that Word remembers
the page you were last on even if you restart Word. So once you've moved
to the Commands page once, Word will remember for you.

Hi Vicki and Estelita,

Like you, I have a hard time trying to find a replacement word in Word

2003 Thesaurus. I find an alternative way to find replacement word
just

like the way we did it in Word XP (2002). The steps to do so is below:

1. Open Word 2003

2. Go to tools (Alt+T) and arrow down to customize and press enter

3. You will be in the Commands page. Arrow down to the category all
commands

4. Tab once. Quickly press the letters t o o to get to the beginning
of

the tools category

5. Page down until you find tools thesaurus Note: this is the one
you

want, not tools ThesaurusRR which is the one used for Word 2003

6. Tab to the keyboard button and press enter

7. You will be in the customize keyboard category. Arrow down to tools
and

tab once to all commands

8. Again quickly type the letters t o o to get to tools and page down
until you find tools thesaurus

9. Tab once and you should hear current keys no selected item .

10. Tab and enter new short-cut key. I have shift+F9 as my keys for
this

command

11. Tab to the close button and press enter. The change will be saved
in

normal.doc
You should be back at the tools thesaurus category where you
previously

press the keyboard button . Tab over to close and press enter.

Now you can press shift+F9 on a word in Word 2003 and you will have
the

familiar Thesaurus that we had in Office XP (2002)

Write me if you have any problems or questions. Since I have made this

change, I have not used Shift+F7 anymore even though that is still
available.

Hi Stewart,

yes, if you press Alt+F4, Firefox will give you an option to save all
the tabs you have had open when you pressed Alt+F4. Next time you start
Firefox again, those tabs would then be restored as if you hadn't closed
the browser.
Windows+M leaves Firefox running as it is, but minimizes it to the task
bar.
If you do this while the dialog is still open, Firefox waits for a
response and blocks all other instances that you might try to launch.

So answer the question in one way or another, and you should be fine.

Stuart, Webvisum is used on sites to either make it more accessible for us
to navigate or to allow us to solve captchas, which are not read by
Webvisum. You first go to the page with the captcha, press a keyboard
combination to send the image to Webvisum, then they'll come back with the
results, ready for you to paste into the appropriate field. Hope this
helps.

So answer the question in one way or another, and you should be fine.

Hi Stewart,

did you download Firefox directly from www.mozilla.com or
www.getfirefox.com? If not, I suggest you uninstall Firefox from
Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs, and reinstall the offered version
from one of these two sources.

Hope this
helps.

Hi Stewart,

yes, if you press Alt+F4, Firefox will give you an option to save all
the tabs you have had open when you pressed Alt+F4. Next time you
start Firefox again, those tabs would then be restored as if you
hadn't closed the browser.
Windows+M leaves Firefox running as it is, but minimizes it to the
task bar.
If you do this while the dialog is still open, Firefox waits for a
response and blocks all other instances that you might try to launch.

So answer the question in one way or another, and you should be fine.

Well folks I have not been able to have time to follow everything on the
list, and I know this a repeat request, but due to unforeseen
circumstances must ask again. Is Twitter compatible with Jaws and are
there any quirks to work through if so, and how to sign up? Thanks. If
you would care to give details off list please do write me so we spare
anyone not wanting to go over it again. Thanks.

Hello Alana,

I went to the site you mentioned and I was able to listen and download
from that site. Just under the edit box where you enter the captcha is
where there is a button that JAWS refers to as unlabeled 0. Pressing
enter on that button causes the speaking of the characters that need to be
typed in the edit box. You can press enter on the same button to hear the
captcha again. The speech is clear and it is easy to hear the characters
to enter in the edit box. When you know the characters then move to the
edit box (press shift with the letter E to return to the edit box from the
unlabeled button). Make sure forms mode is on and type in the characters.
You can then use down arrow until you find the button for enabling you to
listen. You will then be able to listen to additional songs or download
them without having to enter the characters.

Take care.

Hi,

Does anyone know how to get the code for mp3raid.com to listen to music?

It's one of those image things where you have to look at it to get the
code,
but it says on the website that if you cannot read the number in the
image

there is a play button in the image.

After the edit field, Jaws says Flash file, and then the download and
enable listen button displays, but when I press enter on flash file, it
does

nothing, Jaws does not even say that flash file is a button.

Any ideas on how to work with such a page?

Thanks for your help.

Hello Stewart,

You can listen to music free of charge on the site, and they have some
free music to download. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly check the
site out, as I only checked the site to find out why another user was
having trouble getting it to work. I did notice some low costs per track
and album on the site as well. It appears to be a site where a person can
listen to music free of charge, download some free MP3 tracks and pay a
small charge for the rest of the music that isn't free. There is a
download and a listen button under each track's name. I did download one
song but I had to do a right mouse click simulation on a graphical link
that was located just a couple lines above a add to playlist button. In
order to get the save target as choice in the context menu, I had to
route the virtual PC to JAWS cursor and perform the simulated click. I'll
try to check it out more for you some time tonight and give you more info.

Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Making Avast More Accessible

Hi all, please accept my apologies for the duplicate posts, however I feel
that the more people that get the below instructions, the better. So here
we

go.

Hi all, do the following two things to make Avast more accessible.
Configuring Avast to not use the skins for the simple user interface:
1. Start Avast.
2. Wait for the memory test to be completed, then close the web page that
appears. You should now land on a dummy check box.
3. Press the applications key to open a context menu, down arrow to
settings

and press enter. The Programme Settings dialogue box appears, with the
categories tree gaining focus.
4. Tab until you hear, enable skins for simple user interface check box
checked. Press space to uncheck it.
5. Tab to ok and press enter. You'll land back on the dummy check box.
6. Close and restart Avast. You should now be able to tab through the
controls in this programme.
Configuring JAWS to read lists in Avast:
1. Make sure that you're focused on the Avast Simple User Interface.
2. Press JAWS key 6 to open Configuration Manager.
3. Press enter to accept the New Configuration File dialogue box.
4. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a. The advanced
Options dialogue box appears.
5. Shift tab till you hear, Rely on MSAA for List Views check box not
checked. Press space to check it.
6. Press enter to activate the ok button.
7. Either press control s to save your configuration file immediately, or
press alt F4, pressing enter to activate the yes button on the confirm
dialogue box.
By doing these steps, you'll resolve an issue on some machines whereby
JAWS

stops speaking when focused on any of the lists in Avast.

Hi, for a complete scan, check all local disks, check archives, move the
slider to 100% (thorough scan), and click start. Hope that helps.

Hi all, please don't worry about messages like that. It just means that
Avast couldn't scan the files in that archive because it was password
protected. What you can do is tab to the action button, hit space on that,
arrow to delete, press enter, ensure that delete file(s) permanently is
checked, activate the delete button, enter on that, and the results should
refresh with the new data. Don't worry; I don't think it deletes the
archives found to have been locked, but I'm not sure about that one.
I'll

check this out. Hope that helps.

when I got around to it.
Unfortunately, I am having a lot of the same problems using Internet
Explorer. I can tell you that when editing your profile, you press enter
on
the edit my profile link and JAWS appears to do nothing. Internet
Explorer (and I would assume Firefox) loads the profile editing controls
onto that same page without refreshing everything else. So arrow down
passed your profile information and you should see controls to edit the
profile.
As far as my problems...I can't comment on status or send messages or
anything like that.

Hope this helps,

folder to a single file? Perhaps an AVI, MP4, or whatever. I am not
very concerned about which, except good compression is helpful. Due to
my other physical handicaps, it is difficult for me to locate disks. I
would like to have a handy copy of my favorites always available on my
computer.

Hello Stewart,

DVD Flick is a DVD authoring tool and not DVD copying software.
However, there is a good DVD copying program that is free called DVDFab
HD Decrypter. You can choose to copy the entire DVD or just the main
movie. You can also use it to copy disks from XBox 360, Play Station 3
and cell phones, although I have never done so. All you need to do to
copy a full DVD is insert the DVD, in DVDFab HD Decrypter click on the
full disk and activate the start button in the program. You will
need to use the JAWS cursor to find the full disk choice and use the
keyboard to simulate a left mouse button click on the choice. You can
use the tab key to find (and change if desired) the destination folder
and the start button. The entire DVD will be ripped into a folder on
the hard drive. The folder will contain an audio_TS and a Video_TS
folder. You can then use a program like Image Burn to burn the DVD
folder to a new DVD disk.

In Image Burn you need to choose the build choice from the mode menu.
When you do so, the output menu will show on the menu bar. The choice
that should be checked in the output menu is device. With mode set to
build and output to device you can use the browse for a folder
choice under the file menu. You should browse to the folder that
contains the audio_TS and video_ts folders and open it. With a blank
DVD in the drive you can then choose write from the file menu and
follow the prompts. Here are links on Sendspace for the two programs if
you are interested.

Write me off list if you would like to discuss the programs further.

Take care.

Hello Don,

DVD Flick is a good DVD authoring program and is free. You can use
the tab key to move between controls like add file, change
destination, etc. However, when using it a person needs to use the
JAWS refresh command to make the toolbar visible and then use the JAWS
cursor and simulate mouse clicks to activate the various buttons like
project settings and convert to DVD. The JAWS cursor has to also
be used in the settings dialog where the tabs are shown vertically and
with lines of other information between them. So, it does take a
while to learn how to use the program. Although it is a DVD authoring
program, if a person goes into the project settings and picks the
burning tab, there is a checkbox that can be checked to tell the
program to burn the project after encoding. A person can use the
program with JAWS, but it might take a while to figure out. Below are
a couple messages I sent to another member of the list a while ago
about DVD authoring and burning programs.

If you are using Vista Home Premium or Ultimate then your computer
has

Windows DVD Maker. I have found that it uses pretty standard types of
controls and is quite accessible. It handles quite a few of the video
file
formats such as .AVI, .MPG, .WMV and others. You can find it under
the all

programs menu.

If you don't have Vista Home Premium or Ultimate you can download and
install a couple free programs. DVD Flick

Hi listers. I have not tried any recording programs for my computer yet
and would like to know before trying something like goldwave does it do
multi-track recording? Or for any musicians out there, should I get
hardware instead? Sorry about nonjaws question. Just don't know where to
ask this one.

Just right click on the download link, and chose copy short cut. And that
will let you paste it a email or what ever you want.

 Hi all,

This subject may've been covered before, if so, appologies. I'm thinking
of setting up an account on facebook, as my dad and several other family
members are on there, I'm just wondering if anyone has had any luck with
the site as far as accessibility goes.

 Hi Stewart,
A program called DVD audio extractor will do what you want. You can save
 the
files as mp3, ogg, flack and wav and even have an option to save the audio
as one huge file or in separate chapters.
You can download a 30 day trial. After the trial has expired, you wil have
to pay for it if you want to keep using it.
 to get the free trial,
 go to:
 www.castudio.org/dvdaudioextractor/

 Good luck,
 from Andrew

into view to arrange icons and choose name.

 Really.

 It works for me. (lol)

 Hi all,
Owing to certain circumstances, I used jaws 8 for a while, but did not
install the real speak voices that came with it. I then recieved my jaws
 9
SMA upgrade. However, this was one CD, not two. Because my school has the
CDs, I downloaded the upgrade from the internet. Thus, I haven't had a
chance to explore the jaws 9 SMA upgrade CD yet. What I want to know is,
 if
that CD doesn't have real speak on it, Can I install the real speak
 voices
 that came with jaws 8?
thanks in advance for any help,
 from Andrew

Hello everyone. Well finally got the problem fixed. There was just a
 little
glitch to my account settings, but does anyone have any information or
 knows
about this software I've been advised to get called Jody? if so, is it
 jaws
friendly. I'm just wanting to know, so I can decide whether to download it
or not. It came from my internet provider who said that it is some kind of
trouble shooting software. Your help would be most appreciated. kk.

I'm Sorry Stewart, but this is not possible. You see, Googlemail, or any
provider that uses Googlemail, will not show you messages you've sent to
 the
lists by default. This is to prevent spammers from faking e-mail headers
 to
make you believe it comes from you. What you do by enabling recent mode is
download any messages from Googlemail's all mail folder, hence you not
 only
receiving your own copy of messages, but also receiving messages you've
 sent
to the lists. There's just no way around it I'm afraid, unless you set up
another e-mail account like Hotmail. I personally like recent mode, but to
 each their own I guess.

hi i am having big problems with my outlook express
 ok hear we go
wenever i send an email to anyone i am getting a coppy of that email sent
back to me even though the person in question has got the email that i
 sent
 them
my isp is sky, the only emails i want to be able to receive are ones
 from
people who send me ones, and ones that i send out to lists.
also does sky use googlemail? in the name field in outlook express my
 name
is displayed but b4 that it was suggested for me to type recent: followed
 by
 my name,
if i take this recent: thing off, and just have my name displayed in the
name field of the servers tab within outlook express, i don't get any
messages coming from any groups that i have sent out, and i can't even
 send
 myself a message.
so any suggestions or ideas would be most helpful thanks.

Hello stewart try to hit the f6 key then type in your address and see if
that reads it back to you. That's what I use the f6. When you press the
 f6
key it should say http then you can type your address in there.
