I don't think you will automatically get Windows 10, unless you specifically
ask for it.

Also, with regard to IE 11, please be sure you can enter text into edit
form fields.

I developed a problem with this with IE 11 a month or so ago, and after much
work with the Freedom Scientific Tech Support staff, and the Microsoft
Accessibility Hotline, I rolled back to IE 10.

Now, all works as it should.

Hello Gang:

I called the Microsoft Disability HelpDesk this morning. They downloaded
all updates, including IE 11: I am having no problems in the things I use.
So, it seems wonderful.

I have elected to have updates automatically downloaded. In the past, I
had elected to not automatically have them downloaded. Is automatic
downloads a good idea? My concern is that I do not want Windows 10
automatically installed.

It does not even appear in the system tray, at this point.

I did not know this, because I got my laptop through the V A, but I have

Somebody smarter than I am must have figured out Ultimate is better or
something. I, also, have the pro version of JAWS, which I did not request.

Very interesting, Neil.

I'm not sure why IE 11 causes problems for me when entering text into form
fields, so I'll stick with IE 10, at least for the time being.

This issue of mine stumped the Freedom Scientific Technical Support people I
worked with as well.

I'm glad you have IE 11 working for you.

Hi Donnie,

Type the words windows update (without the quotes) in the start menu
search box. Pressing the Windows key will give you the search box. The
first result will likely be for Windows Update but if not use down arrow or
up arrow key to find it. Press enter on the choice. In the resulting
window use tab key to find the link for changing settings and press enter
key. You should be given the dialog box for adjusting your settings.

Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Automatic updates

2009-10-16 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Dear Alan,

Under the windows update settings via the control panel, there are, I
think, four options.

You apparently know how to get to that, as you've disabled automatic
updates, but change that option to the one that says something like:
notify me about updates but don't download automatically.

Then, I suppose when you've restarted your pc, you'll probably have a
pop up window, telling you there are new updates.

Press jaws key with function key 11 to get in the system tray, don't
route jaws to pc, it's not necessary and probably won't work right then,
but just arrow to new updates, where you enter.

Use your up and down arrows to find out what the updates are and ensure
that everything apart from internet explorer 8 is checked.

Uncheck the latter with the space bar.

Then tab to ok or download.

You'll get a prompt on whether you want to hide the updates you haven't
checked, to cancel or to be asked later.

You probably want to hide them and/or not to be asked again.

download and after the download, if you're not specifically prompted,
go to the system tray again and under new updates, enter on install.

Now you'll be prompted, probably about once a month, that there are new
updates, which you then install in the same way via the system tray and
just make sure that internet explorer 8, if it ever comes up again,
[which does happen on my pc about every three months] is unchecked, as
indicated and install the rest.

Don't worry further about wrong installations then, it works as
specified.

Regards

Riana

I am not worried so much about Security,as I am about downloading

system, my thinking, is of course:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it

And as I said things are just working so perfectly, two (2) T-Drives,
fantastic sound system, no problems with JAWS or anything!

Can anyone tell me why I should allow the updates, and if so, what
should I
be weary of?

I do not want to update to JAWS 10 nor 11 at this time, and JAWS 9 is
working fine, but will any of the current updates mess up JAWS 9.0156?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide me in the way of information!

Hi Alan,
There are tutorials on Windows automatic updates on both:
www.blind-computing.com
and
www.jaws-users.com
If you set up automatic updates correctly, you can choose which updates to
install.
Security updates should always be installed, and can always be un-installed
if there seems to be some conflict.
On quite a few different machines over a 9 year period,
I have never really experienced a problem resulting from a Windows update.
