You do not need to uninstall the previous JAWS version first. Multiple versions of JAWS can coexist on the same system. In fact, you won't want to because JAWS 18 has reintroduced the merge utility, even though that didn't work for me. It is never required to remove the previous version of JAWS before installing a newer version. I find it helpful to maintain the two most recent JAWS versions on my system, the older one as a back up. As such, I would keep J17 and install J18 "over" it. If you maintain J17 at least until you install J18 your J17 settings will be preserved if you so elect.
