Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer Not Playing Well with JAWS18
Hi All, Thank you Dennis for pointing me in the correct direction. The Dell Rep change the sound card driver to Intel (or something like that). It was some type of advanced driver called Real something. I apologize for not remember the exact names of these. The Dell Rep made a note in my account so that if for some reason in the future it gets changed back we will know where to start. As much as I dreaded laying out the money for the Dell Pro Support Plus, I am glad I did. I've now received at least 5 hours of support. Thanks to all for your ideas. The pop3 (or is it smtp, I always forget) servers will are designed so you can connect, grab your messages and then disconnect. Usually on modern internet connections this all happens really quickly, but it could take longer if you have a lot of messages or if they contain large attachments. I don't know the specific messages that appear on the screen for each connection type, but it just sounds like JAWS is reading these. If you get an error message on any of your accounts that is consistently happening over a period of a couple of days, contact your e-mail provider.
Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer Not Playing Well with JAWS18
Good afternoon, Annette, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. Another thing that may cause this is sound drivers. I've got an dell optoplex desktop at work where jaws sounds get cut off. It's intermittent but it's mighty annoying when it does happen. If you need assistance in getting the correct sound drivers, I'll be happy to assist you. The nice thing with dell machines is that once you have your serial number you can go to support.dell.com and get the right drivers that you need for your machine. Let me know if I can assist you further. Have a blessed day! Turning off special effects in sound settings will definitely help but it's more a matter of sound card drivers. That's definitely one aspect of windows ten that is a pain, grin! She did tell me that I need to find sound enhancements for the sound card and figure out which ones to turn off. If anyone can direct me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. POP3 is Post Office Protocol, wherein you actually download your messages from the server to your computer. IMAP is newer, in it you download only the headers, your message remains at the server. SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is what sends your messages out to your mail server, which in turn forwards to the next server in the chain and so on to however many are necessary until it reaches the recipient's server, where it awaits access by te recipient, either Online, with POP3 or with IMAP. There are several types of e-mail servers out there, Microsoft Exchange Server being one. Some just require you to set up a username and password; others need you to manually set up port numbers, encryption type and so on. All this stuff clearly has already been done on your system, so it doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about so long as you are getting messages on all your accounts. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Laura Richardson Sent: October 20, 2017 5:20 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Connectivity to server Outlook 2016 Hello, I'm using Outlook 2016, Jaws 18 & Windows 10 .. Re: [JAWS-Users] NEW COMPUTER, WINDOWS 8.1 MUCH BETTER THAN WINDOWS 7
In redesigning 8.1, Microsoft did something for which it hasn't been exactly famous--it listened to consumers and gave them what they asked for, rather than what Ms thought they should have. I'm hopeful the same philosophy is being applied in 10. Within the next couple weeks I will be getting a new computer. It will be an HP Pro, Windows 7, 64 bit machine. Could someone please give me the basics on what and how I need to set it up for maximum use with JAWS 12? Oh yeah, it will be coming with Office 2010. For the past 11 years I have been using a Compact Home, Windows XP with Office 2000, and currently running JAWS 11. I think I will be in for quite a few big changes. I'm hoping that you can teach an old dog some new tricks!!! Thanks, Donnie ~~~ When talent & skill work together u get a masterpiece ; when faith & patience work together u get the Master's peace. She does need one on one help I think. But rather she can get it or afford to pay is the question. Otherwise, she needs to just focus on one thing at a time. I have read post on this list of things these guys do and lordy it just seems like something I wouldn't ever do. So I think the key for Karen is to only follow steps for whatever problem she is needing help for and disregard all the other things or she will get into more areas that will be confusing to her. Exactly! That's how you learn. Hi Karen, I can remember how totally intimidated i was by jaws and the computer when i first got mine. I was 52 and had no idea what i was doing. If you go into the jaws window and hit alt+h, arrow down and you'll find "training" and "keystrokes with jaws". that's a good starting place. I think the thing that made me feel most comfortable, since i was afraid i'd break the monster, was knowing that i can go into help, or the control panel, or any program, play around all i want and, as long as i hit escape rather than "accept", "yes", or enter, i wouldn't change anything permanently. Re: [JAWS-Users] new computer
Hi Alan, You didn't mention how much ram the computer will have, nor what video card will be running in it. It would also be a good thing to mention what type of sound card, if any, will you be running, and any extra software that might be included in the mix. In my humble opinion, these are the major factors when considering whether Jaws will work well on a new computer. I would also note that since you are getting XP Pro, you'll have to upgrade to Jaws pro, so you might want to take that into consideration when purchasing. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer
Just a comment Patti If you want to use Office 2003 I think it is a good idea to completely uninstall Office 2007. I found having elements of both packages made my computer unstable and eventually completely removed 2007 to regain stability. If the 2 packages are going to work at all together you probably need to 1. Uninstall 2007 2. Install 2003 3. Install 2007 again but somehow prevent it upgrading 2003. I believe that this can be done but this probably needs research. Personally I just dumped 2007 as a nasty piece of software. Hi Rick, Can you please instruct me on how to configure the machine for optimum use with Jaws? I'll try this in my new system. It is using Vista home premium and JAWS 8.0. When in Internet, can we turn off the reading of other stuff, except of the links reading? I mean turning off the reading of headings, tables etc. I just like to consentrate on the links if it is possible. Thank you. Estelita ___ Now you can scan emails quickly with a reading pane. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer
I have a similar experience. Sometimes when I am composing email using outlook express the edit fields do not speak i.e. to: cc: subject:, the fields just say edit. This can be annoying requiring me to unload and quit jaws and load it again. And, even this does not always work. - Original Message - From: "Patti" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 10:24 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer > When I was forwarding a message. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer
With E-Machines I usually don't find anything that needs to be removed. Sometimes the big fix program which updates the system can cause problems with jaws, but just have it checked not to run at start up and let him run it for you once a month to get your updates from gateway for the computer. I've ran several and that is usually the only thing I take out of the start up unless there's programs there I know I won't use and the computer don't need. Re: [JAWS-Users] New computer and getting demo sequence
What jaws license do you have and what version of the operating system in each case? My guess is that you have jaws standard and had xp home before and now have a version of vista that does not work with the standard version of jaws. HHowever, we need to know which jaws license and versions of windows you have and had to be more specific. IN the meantime, you ight want to try and put the free oepn source nvda on your system for non-expiring speech until you get your jaws license sorted out.
