I recently received a mail notification from Freedom Scientific advising me that I can renew my Jaws SMA for the next two Jaws upgrades for $120, as long as I do so by December 31. In a followup conversation with the FS Customer Service Department, I was told that if I wait to renew my SMA after December 31, that cost will go up to $180. Re: [JAWS-Users] SMA Renewal Question
From my point of view, the initial cost for JAWS is a bit of a pill to swallow, but after that, at only $120 for a SMA that gives you two major version upgrades, or two years of maintenance, it only costs $5 per month, very affordable. Even if Freedom Scientific decides to raise the price for SMAs to $180, that's still a very affordable $7.50 per month. Sure there are free alternatives like NVDA, or Windows Eyes if you have Microsoft Office, but I've found with NVDA, most of the features already built into JAWS, you have to go find an add in for it, and some features simply aren't available. I'm very happy with JAWS, and have no plans to switch to something else unless Freedom Scientific gives me a good reason to. When I first lost my vision I was told to get OmniPage and use it with Microsoft Word to read my mail. I was so disappointed with the results I was getting that I tried Open Book, less than a week later, I bought it and happily kicked OmniPage out of my system. So it looks like I'll be a Freedom Scientific customer for the foreseeable future. Cheers! Re: [JAWS-Users] SMA Renewal Question
As I recall, after I got 17, I needed to renew my SMA for 18 and 19. I did it before the year ended, but after my old SMA was over, and still paid only $120. All I can figure is that despite the final upgrade on the SMA being delivered around the beginning of November, the SMA doesn't actually expire until the end of the year. I was unaware that the price went up after the end of the year, I renewed my SMA in November just to have it done and out of my hair. Cheers! [JAWS-Users] SMA Renewal Question
Hello, everyone. My intent with this e-mail is not to stir up controversy, but to try to get the truth regarding upgrading a Jjaws SMA. Here's my situation: My current Jaws SMA ends with Jaws 18. I was always under the impression that the $120 SMA renewal cost figure would be the same as long as you renewed your SMA prior to the next major Jaws update. Perhaps I am mistaken here, and wonder what others know about this issue. I may not be able to renew my SMA prior to December 31, and just want to know what to expect, or how to advocate for a fair price. Thanks!
