There's also an eject option in the context menu when you're on the
device/thumbdrive you wish to disconnect.

In Windows 7, I open the list of items in the system tray with Jaws key and
f11. If you have a thumb drive connected, Safely Remove Hardware will be in
the tray. Choose it and press enter. Choose the drive with the thumb drive
and press enter. When you get the message that it is safe to remove the
device, do so.

Robert,
This is the easiest way I have found to make sure that a jump drive is ready
for removal.

1. While the jump drive is still connected, open the Computer option.
2. Now arrow down until you hear that particular drive mentioned.
Important! Do not open the drive.
3. Press the Applications key. In most cases, the letter J is a first
letter navigation to the Eject option.

Note: If you hear a warning bell, this is one of those units which have
their own disconnect feature. In that case, look for the drive in the
system tray, tab over to some of the options until you find something like
Shut Down or the equivalent. Just press Enter on that option and the system
will do what is necessary to prepare the unit for removal.
If all else fails, shut down your computer and then remove the drive. When
the computer shuts down, it loses connection with the drive.

I am running JAWS V. 13 under Windows 7. I would greatly appreciate if
someone could tell me whether there exists a JAWS keystroke to safely remove
my USB thumb drive. Under Windows XP, one could go into the system tray via
insert plus F-12 to get to the safely remove button. However, this does not
work in Windows 7. Thanks for any help.

Norman,
I have always wondered that myself until one day when I did just that with a
Kingston drive. It did something horrendous to the files and I had to
completely re-format the drive.
No fun, I can tell you!
Even when you have closed out the files on a drive, the system still thinks
that the unit is live.

2012-05-12 Thread Lennie

Hi Norman,

Normally when you write to an USB drive, you must safely remove the
drive otherwise you may lose data or corrupt the drive in some way.

However, if you just read a flash drive and don't write to it, it is
usually safe just to remove it.

I always in either case do a safely remove any of my USB drive just
as a precaution since I have a lot of data on them.

Take care.

Lennie
