Daniel Beck resolved JENKINS-23543 as Duplicate Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite Alright, it's still early, so I didn't see this was resolved as Duplicate. There is no reason to reopen issues resolved or closed as Duplicate other than having determined that it is not the same issue as the linked one. As you can see, the linked issue is still unresolved, so it's unsurprising you're still seeing this problem. Mark Callow commented on JENKINS-23543 Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite Could you make sure the change also works on older versions of OS X, and submit a pull request? If that is addressed to me, the answer is no, I'm afraid. I only have jenkins installed on 1 Mac and it is running Yosemite. I also do not have a clone of the jenkins source and don't really want to make one. I suggest that the postinstall-launchd chown jenkins:jenkins /var/log/jenkins instead of chown daemon:daemon /var/log/jenkins. This is mostly to avoid problems in case of a restrictive umask during installation that would gives the directory other than 755 permissions. This message is automatically generated by JIRA. Mark Callow commented on JENKINS-23543 Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite I can confirm that the change I suggested yesterday (I wish this system numbered the comments) works. The new log file created during file rotation is owned by jenkins and the jenkins server therefore continues to run. This message is automatically generated by JIRA. [JIRA] [core] (JENKINS-23543) Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite
Callow Mark commented on JENKINS-23543 Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite The workaround is only temporary. When the logs are rotated, which happens every night, a new empty /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log is created owned by root so the problem reappears. I have not yet found the place where log rotation is done so I can fix it. I am having to chown every day. @Daniel Beck, carriage return has nothing to do with it. 0xd is the errno for "Permision Denied", which exactly describes the problem. /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log is specified as the Standard{Error,Out}Path in org.jenkins-ci.plist, which is used by launchd. My theory is that prior to Yosemite launchd opened the file and set up STDOUT STDERR before changing the process owner to "jenkins" and running jenkins-runner.sh. In Yosemite, it seems launchd does not open the file until after it has changed the process ownership, hence "permission denied" when the file is owned by root. I was hoping the person responsible for the OS X installer and the launchd file org.jenkins-ci.plist set-up would know right away how to fix this, once aware of the problem. It seems not as this major bug has languished for 4 months. I am new to launchd so have quite a learning curve. This message is automatically generated by JIRA. Mark Callow commented on JENKINS-23543 Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite I think I have found what needs to be fixed for a permanent solution, beyond chown'ing /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log. You also need to edit /etc/newsyslog.d/jenkins.conf, to make sure new log files created by rotation are owned by jenkins. Change the line /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log 644 3* $D0 J to /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log jenkins:jenkins644 3* $D0 J I'll confirm after tonight's log rotation that this actually works. The newsyslog conf file distributed in the OS X installer needs to be updated to this and a new release made as a matter of urgency. This message is automatically generated by JIRA. Dave Anderson commented on JENKINS-23543 Launchctl does not load Jenkins on OS X 10.10 Yosemite On Yosemite beta 8 this issue still exists. After reading the launchctl and launchd.plist docs it appears as though the StandardOutPath and StandardErrorPath value of /var/log/jenkins/jenkins.log is to a location for which the LaunchAgent does not have access. I modified this path to be /Users/Shared/Jenkins/Home/jenkins.log and (as the Jenkins user) launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/org.jenkins-ci.plist now works. This may not be an optimal path, but appears to work as an interim workaround. This message is automatically generated by JIRA.
