Title: Message Title Mark Waite resolved as Won't Fix Won't change this because git does not provide any facility for proof that the person who made a commit is exactly who they claim to be. From a SOX compliance issue - allowing the username to not match the credentials used is a 'really bad thing'. Being able to trace who made a change to a system and when they did it - and proof that only they could do so (ie they had access to the credentials) is of primary importance where the SOX compliance is required. If SOX compliance is required and if SOX compliance requires that you must be able to confidently trace who made a change to the system with proof that only they could do so, then git is probably not the source control system for you.
