Dave:

You have more patience than I. If JAWS does not return within a minute or
so, I do a (you should excuse the expression) blind shutdown of JAWS, go to
the DESKTOP, where I have already placed the focus, and reopened JAWS. Mind
you, if a good pair of eyes is ready/willing/able, not to mention actually
present, I am not shy about asking for help in case something is going on -
un related to JAWS.

However, when no eyes are around, it feels like the world has been shut
off; so, I know what you mean by waiting for nothing. I usually try to find
something else to do.

Jim,

Pretty much hit-or-miss. It would depend on the Operating System + Video
Device Driver + JAWS Version + Program Version + Unknown Gremlins.

Very hard to duplicate symptoms with so many variables. I do know that JAWS
16 tendency to close and reopen without any warning is a bit of a thorn in
my side. There are times when it won't come back at all, and I'm sitting
there with my hands poised, waiting for nothing.

Dave:

Very enlightening! For some reason, I never got around to, nor frankly
considered, uninstalling previous versions of JAWS, and this may have proven
to be far-sighted after all. I think that I may adopt your 3 most-recent
version strategy myself. However, once someone moves to Windows 10,
previous JAWS versions will not work - from what I gather.

However, it may be a while before I upgrade to Windows 10. So, for now, are
there some applications that typically misbehave with the latest JAWS
offering? Or, as with many things, it is pretty much a hit or miss
situation?

Thanks.

Jim,

As to previous versions -- simply because the current install is running
fine, it does not mean that it will run so with all applications. I
occasionally run JAWS 15 when JAWS 16 is misbehaving in a particular
program. I delete versions older than 3 major revisions back, just to keep
things simpler. And I still have all the executables for last revisions of
all major versions going back to 3.5. Of course that's just my
anal-retentive nature at work, having sufficient hard disk space to justify
that level of insanity.

Thanks for that. I'm not sure I see the usefulness in that. If I wanted to have
separate somethings, I'd just create a second user account so I could have
separate documents folders, downloads, etc. Still not convinced I need this. I
may buy a cheap refurb so I can play with Windows 10 when I get bored, but as

 Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing
that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program; you
should
use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that now in
 Windows
7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know
if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating system
that
I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can see is that
Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where Windows 7
will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, If it
 ain't broke,
don't
fix it, apply here? I'd really honestly like to know if JAWS users in
particular are finding anything beneficial in the upgrade, or if it's
just something fun to do to your functioning computer to see if it
 will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in mall?

Hi,
There will be no service packs as in the past. Continuous refinements will be
the norm from now on, which are good thing and a bad thing.
Virtual desktops (called Task View) are a way to group running apps together
into workspaces. In other words, you can open multiple desktops with apps for
different purposes opened in each desktop. By default, when you install Windows
10 and with multiple desktops opened, pressing Alt+TAB will cycle among apps on
the current desktop (go to Settings/System/Multitasking to change this
behavior). This isn't the same as having two or more user accounts (I for one
use two user accounts and switch between them for various purposes).
Cheers,
Joseph

RE: Installation of Windows 10

If you have uninstalled all previous versions of JAWS, must you still do a
repair on JAWS?

Hi,

I used both jfw 16 and narrator and I had no problems. Once you are upgraded
you need to run a repair on jaws.

Hi,

I know there's been much discussion of various aspects related to this
topic. However, I'd like to know if anyone here has successfully installed
or upgraded to Windows 10 independently.
Did you use JAWS 16 or Narrator or both? I'm ready to install this but
don't know that I'll have a sighted person around to help, so want to make
sure I can do this with one or two screen readers.
Any tips will be helpful.

RE: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?

2015-08-10 Thread Michal Nowicki via Jfw
If you don't uninstall previous versions of JAWS, you won't even be able to
upgrade to Windows 10. That is because Windows Update will stop the upgrade
when it detects software that is incompatible with Windows 10.

Don't mean to be smart; but, why would you want to use previous versions
of JAWS if you have the latest version running successfully. I'm sure that
there is a really good reason for it! :) :)

John,

A very good point. I sometimes need to revert back to an older version of
JAWS if the current one seems to misbehave. With Windows 10 we need to start
with JAWS 16 and live with any limitations until the release of JAWS 17.

And, yes, to another lister who suggested that it would be a good move on FS
part to follow MS with a free upgrade to JAWS 17 with some proof that
Windows 10 was installed. Why not make it a coincident upgrade program?

 Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
 doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program;
you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that
now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can
see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where
 Windows
7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that should
cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying, If it
ain't broke, don't fix it, apply here? I'd really honestly like to
know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in
the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning
computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in
 mall?

 Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm

you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that

indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can
see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where

Hi Brad,

I purchased a new laptop last November, a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 running Windows
8.1. While I did get accustomed to Windows 8.1, I wasn't crazy about it. I
updated to Windows 10, and like the fact that the start menu is back. When I
press the Windows key, I am placed in a search field, similar to Windows 7.
If I down arrow, I am placed in a list of my 6 most used programs, which is
really convenient. I am finding Cortana to work quite well... when she isn't
able to answer my query, she opens up a search page in Bing... wish the
search results could be switched to Google, but at least for now, Bing is
the only choice.

I am looking forward to trying Edge once Jaws support is available for it.

I think whether or not to update to Windows 10 is a very personal choice,
and, I also feel that we shouldn't be advised not to update just because we
use Jaws. Having said that though, I don't think I would have updated if my
laptop wasn't fairly new.

I've been reading the various forums and many people are experiencing
troubles with the Windows 10 update, not only users of assistive technology,
so, as I say, the choice to update is a personal one.

For me, I'm glad I updated, but we'll see how things go once Microsoft
starts pushing out those updates! Ha ha.

Like you say, fun, fun, fun! :)

I did it all by myself.
I upgraded from windows 7 home premium, running Jaws 16. Thanks to the people
on the list as I had to do a repair on jaws.
I tried using narrator and that helped a little. But, I'm use to jaws, thus
found it frustrating.

In short you can do it by yourself.

Did you use JAWS 16 or Narrator or both? I'm ready to install this but
don't know that I'll have a sighted person around to help, so want to make

 Any tips will be helpful.
I've got my machine set and ready to go.

Update on My Focus Issue with Outlook 2013

2015-08-10 Thread Les Kriegler via Jfw
Yesterday, I reported that when launching Outlook 2013, rather than reaching
the Inbox, focus was lost and I had to Alt-Tab away from that window to
refocus the Inbox. Since Office 2010 was removed, I decided to run a Jaws
repair from the command line which I indicated I would try. A Sentinel
Driver was installed, and I was initially concerned as Windows XP was
referenced which I am not running. When the process was completed and I was
instructed to re-start Windows 8.1, I launched Outlook 2013 and the Inbox
did come up as I had hoped it would. I've launched Outlook twice and focus
goes to the Inbox. So hopefully, the Jaws repair has resolved this issue.
Thanks.

You may need to change the way the function keys work. By default they
are used as media keys and you have to press and hold fn key to get a
standard function key. However, you can change this setting in the bios
or what ever it is called on newer computers.

Hello Carolyn,
To turn the virtual ribbon on or off;
1. Press insert F 2,
2. Press S approximately 3 times until you hear Settings Center,
3. Press enter,
4. Type ribbon in the edit field that comes up, and down arrow to select
it,
5. You will probably be prompted to use the default, and instructed to press
control, shift, D; do so,
6. press space bar to choose use virtual ribbon, or not,
7. Tab once for instructions or twice to the okay button to implement your
selection.
Cheers Kevin.

There's one more good reason to avoid FS's virtual ribbon. Using the MS
ribbon, we're using the same one that everyone in the world does. It means
we can share info with sighted people and take advantage of regular online
solutions when we encounter problems. I google solutions to Office problems
regularly, but the answers might do me little good if I'd resorted to the
virtual ribbon.

I think the instructions Bill is referring to is that as you tab, the
keystrokes for accessing the various options from within the ribbon are
given. Personally, I can live without that. I've had a real struggle with
the ribbons ever since I started to use them, and I think it's because
virtual ribbons were checked. I wondered why NVDA seemed to handle the
ribbons more effectively than Jaws, and now I think I understand why that
was the case. In retrospect, use of the virtual ribbons caused me more
trouble than they were worth. Perhaps FS will improve on that feature, but
for now, I won't be using that feature.

Hi, Les. The argument for not unchecking the Virtual Ribbon is this:
JAWS put in the Virtual Ribbon for those who wanted to manually
navigate the ribbons using the arrows and the Tab key. It is supposed
to make the menus more accessible, but I haven't found this to be true
 in most instances.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon

check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the

First letter navigation does work in the virtual ribbon. I don't mean the
Office shortcuts; I mean true first letter navigation. If there is more than
one item starting with the same letter, you will have to press enter on the
one you want. The only thing I like about virtual ribbons is the fact that
it is very easy to see the groups because they show in submenus. I teach
students, and I always show them both ways to navigate the ribbons and lay
out the pros and cons of both very clearly so that they can make their own
informed decision. I'm all about choice when it comes to computers.

To check your settings for the Virtual Ribbon Menu in JAWS:

Press JAWS KEY plus F2. Arrow down to Settings Center and press Enter.
Press the letter M until it says Miscellaneous. Press Right Arrow to
 Open Miscellaneous.

Arrow down to Virtual Ribbon Menu. It will probably tell you that this
setting is unavailable except in the default configuration of JAWS.

To load the default configuration: Press Shift plus Control plus the
 letter D as in dog.

Once your default configuration is loaded, you can Press the Up and
Down Arrow to see if your Virtual Ribbon Menu is checked or not. You
want it to be unchecked if you want all of the keyboard shortcuts to work
 properly.
 If
it is checked, press the Space Bar to uncheck it. Then Tab to OK and
press Enter to save these settings.

 I hope this helps you.

You have more patience than I. If JAWS does not return within a minute or
so, I do a (you should excuse the expression) blind shutdown of JAWS, go to
the DESKTOP, where I have already placed the focus, and reopened JAWS. Mind
you, if a good pair of eyes is ready/willing/able, not to mention actually

un related to JAWS.

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and
I just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program;
you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in
mall?

RE: Advice on Lenovo Laptop with JAWS

2015-08-10 Thread Merv Keck via Jfw
Hi,
This is probably not the most popular choice, however, since it works for me
very well I will present it as a viable alternative, smile! I recently
purchased a 16 GB Lenovo Z70 from amazon and it is a very nice machine. The
only issue I had with it was the integrated sound used a smart audio driver
that was almost like the audio ducking on an iPhone. When Jaws was talking
during a system sound event my Jaws would reduce speech volume by at least half
and sometimes stay down there for a minute or more. It was Dolby 5.1 sound just
had it quirks. However, my correction for that is another subject.
To address your subject, this is a 17.3 inch display and the surface of the
laptop is rather large. In fact the touch screen in front of the full keyboard
is the largest and widest I have ever seen on a laptop. And I had one of those
big dell 20 inch all in one models that you needed two hands to pick up back in
the days of Vista.
So in order to keep from constantly bumping this massive touch screen I just
started using an external keyboard which I preferred anyway. Since this
keyboard does not have a function key it does not force me to use the F keys as
media keys so I did not need to mess around in the bios. As an added bonus if I
do want to use them as media keys like today when I wanted to mute Jaws in a
hurry during a phone call I reached over and muted it on the laptop and then
when I got off the phone I reached over and unmuted it on the laptop. So I
basically have the best of both worlds this way.

weird editing problem in word 2010

2015-08-10 Thread Drew Hunthausen via Jfw
Dear list,

I am using the latest build of jaws 16 and am having a problem that I cannot
figure out in Ms word 2010. When I open a document, doesn't matter if it's a
new one or one I'm opening from before, I cannot edit it. When I try to type
or do anything jaws will say things like this key is not available in ms
word or there are no graphics in this document. I found if I hit f-10 to go
into the menus and then exit out again it fixes the problem temporarily.
Once I alt tab out of the document and back in I have to do this again. No
clue what setting I changed. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

Sounds like you may have inadvertently enabled navigation keys. Navigation
keys in Word is a feature similar to the virtual cursor in HTML
environments. In fact, the keystroke to turn this feature on and off is the
same as the command to toggle the virtual cursor: JAWS key plus z. See if
that works.

needing to run earlier versions of Jaws

2015-08-10 Thread Jean Menzies via Jfw

Changed the subject line.

Here is an example of why I won't upgrade and why I need to run an earlier
version of Jaws. Jaws 16 will not read hidden text attributes in Word. I
must, must, must have that functionality for my work, as I use the Duxbury
Word template, which uses hidden text for text markup in Word. Jaws 15 reads
this, so I need to stay with Jaws 15 until FS gets around to fixing this.
Yes, I have reporrted it, with no resolution. I ultimately will need someone
to verify for me that it does work in a future Jaws release before
upgrading. With no option to simply load a previous version that works for
this feature, I don't want to destroy my work productivity. For those
interested, Hidden text can be turned on or off just like paragraph marks.
Its under the Tools, Options, Display, where you can check show hidden text.

When you hit Control Y, of course, you get the option to switch to other
portions of Outlook, but it also announces how message you have unread.
Admittedly, unlike good old Outlook Express it doesn't give a total, then
give the unread messages. I do like the calendar though.

I had one problem. I was told that to block a sender to send the e-mail to
Junk, which worked for a couple, but not on the last one I attempted to
send. I ended up permanently deleting it, but I wanted to block it.

Another thing I am wanting to do, which is not specific to Outlook, but does
apply to it is to know how to add words to my dictionary, since Control A is
not doing that; also I want to know what commands to give Spell Check to
make the change I want.

OK. I will have to try it that way. My message to Apple Accessibility

I might've not been looking for the right place to find where the topics

When I pressed Enter on the dash, JAWS kind of lost its place, but I found

This issue they're having is with properly linking to a podcast feed so

Right after it says choose a topic is a line of dashes which will

I have no idea if we're talking about the same thing or not. I just went
to
support.apple.com to see if I could find what your issue might be. Keep
in
mind I have no Apple products, so I couldn't go too far. I am using
Firefox
39.0.3 and JAWS 15. But I said I wanted to contact support, and I then
had
to choose Get Started. There were a list of buttons to choose from. I
chose
Mac, and that gave me subcategories. I chose Desktop. I selected each by
pressing the Spacebar on them. Then it gave me a whole new screen. I said
my question was about Mail, so I pressed spacebar on Mail. Then another
screen opened, and I really didn't know what I was trying to do since I
don't have a question, so I closed the window. Is that of any help? Try
spacebar to select an option if that's your problem. Sorry not to be more
helpful.

Brent,

I'm afraid I'm not going to be any help to you. After I sent my
previous
message, it occurred to me (derf dederf derf) that I could access what
I
needed at home as easily as at work. We do use a vendor that uses
Zendesk, but there are no dropdowns on their portal. There's an edit
field for Subject, and edit field for Description, and an edit field
for
the name of the organization for which we work. Then there's a browse
button in case we need to attach any files to the request, and then a
submit button. So apparently the vendor doesn't use any categories.
The
last time I used Zendesk with a different vendor, we did have
categories
to select, but it wasn't a problem in 2011-2012. But I no longer have
access to that instance of Zendesk. I suspect you're suffering from a
move to a mobile friendly platform for Zendesk, which often breaks
accessibility.

Sorry not to be of more help.

Brad

Re: Best email client with Jaws

2015-08-10 Thread Brad Martin via Jfw
I loved the old Qualcomm Eudora, but I ran into some problems running it
under 64-bit Windows 7. There was probably a work around, but a sighted
friend kept telling me how much she loved Thunderbird, so I finally gave
it a try around the time I got this computer. I love it. It's clean,
simple, almost never crashes on me, sorts my mail by Email account (I
have several), spellchecks as I type (although the dictionary is a
little limited as is), and works terrific with JAWS version 15 in
Windows 7 Pro. And, bonus, it has a conventional menu bar. A nice plus
for me (but probably not needed by most people) is that I could automate
the sending of form letters to my clients with a shortcut on the
desktop. I've been thoroughly impressed with it, and I kind of didn't
expect to be. In other words, I was a tough sell, but you'd have to give
me a really really good reason to switch.

One caution: When I open Thunderbird, I have to Shift Tab once to get
into the list of messages. But it's one keystroke, and now I'm so used
to it I don't even notice.

However, when no eyes are around, it feels like the world has been shut

Pretty much hit-or-miss. It would depend on the Operating System + Video

Very hard to duplicate symptoms with so many variables. I do know that JAWS

Melissa, if you press Control Y, it asks if you want to go to another

When you went to Live Mail, what did you do about your Contacts?

Is it easy to make distribution lists in Windows Live Mail. I have several
that I need to make. Today, I needed to send out word of a death to one of
my groups, but do not have the lists now and not the time to go through some
130 contacts for 30.

What do you like about Windows Live Mail? Does it have a calendar?

Can you tab around in it, or do you have to give Keyboard commands?

There's one more good reason to avoid FS's virtual ribbon. Using the MS

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon
without telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual
Ribbon. This may be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to
check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the
function of some of the shortcuts.

Hi, Carolyn. You can either use the shortcuts, or you can use the arrow keys
plus the tab key to navigate the ribbon. You just lose some of the JAWS
instructions while navigating.

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon
without telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual
Ribbon. This may be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to
check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the
function of some of the shortcuts.

Okay, what are the consequences of unchecking the use of ribbons? I

Thanks Steve.

The former, I couldn't get the date information, but the latter I was able

For anyone who cares to know, the date was march 15th, 2015.

Kimsan,

The time and date a note was written is on the status line when the note is
open.

Or you can change the view of the Notes folder from the default Icon view to
Notes list view, and then the date and time appears alongside the note name
in the folder. There are a number of ways you can make this change; here are
two:
If you aren't using the virtual ribbon, press Alt, V, C, V, RightArrow,
Enter.
If you are using the virtual ribbon, it's Alt, V, RightArrow, Enter,
RightArrow, Enter

A toast notification is like a help balloon except it doesn't really

You can ignore them, and if you do, they'll live in Action Center

Still not convinced I need this. I may buy a cheap refurb so I can

RE: Installation of Windows 10

2015-08-10 Thread Les Kriegler via Jfw
Hi Ted,

After contacting FS Support, I learned that the reason the syntax for
repairing of Jaws didn't work was because I ran the executeable file. In
fact, one has to run the installation file. So the syntax would be the Jaws
installer file followed by a space followed by /type followed by a space and
then the word repair. The instructions provided previously were correct,
but I used the Jaws16 executeable file rather than the installation file for
16. Hope this helps.

Hello! I hate to correct anyone on the list, but I have to say that just
because you are running Windows 8.1 does not mean you won't have to do a
JAWS repair. I installed Windows 10 last night, and upon turning on my
computer this morning, I got a message saying that the mirror display driver
was not working properly. I did indeed have to run a JAWS repair. I was
running the latest build of JAWS 16 as the FS instructions stated you had to
install first. Not sure why this happened. Those of you who are upgrading
from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 may encounter the same thing I did. Not to
worry, once you run the repair, all seems to work OK.

Re: submitting tickets to Zendesk sites

2015-08-10 Thread Brad Martin via Jfw
Brent,

Using your link, I went to the page, and selected the link that just said
-
under the heading
Submit A Request
Choose a Topic

When I pressed Enter on the dash, JAWS kind of lost its place, but I found
that same heading, and all the topics were displayed. They did not say
link before announcing the topic, but I just ignored that and pressed
the spacebar on Change Feed URL. Up came the page asking for my Email
address, etc.

Again, this was with Firefox 39.0.3 and JAWS 15.

Hope that helps,
Brad

This issue they're having is with properly linking to a podcast feed so
iTunes opens. I just wanted to submit a ticket here
 here
 https://itunespodcasts.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
to see if it is possible to make a link on a website that opens iTunes to
the reviews page of their podcast. I've emailed Apple's accessibility, but
this link isn't a site they control directly.
Right after it says choose a topic is a line of dashes which will probably
speak silent, depending on how punctuation is set. The virtual cursor off
way might let me submit it in the wrong category, but it probably goes in
 other.
I've seen this setup on Uber's site also, but at least they let you email
supp...@uber.com, but Apple doesn't have a podcast support email address.

 Brad

 They
don't identify as any link or combo box for me to use them, and
 turning

Apple and Uber are just two examples of sites that use this. How can
 I

Brad was saying that people may say to uncheck the Virtual Ribbon
without telling the person the down side of unchecking the Virtual
Ribbon. This may be true. However, some of the techs at FS tell you to
check the Virtual Ribbon, without telling you that this blocks the
function of some of the shortcuts.

Yes, but some people may want to stay with the virtual ribbon, which
is the FS attempt to make ribbon navigation easier for visually

Personally, I stayed with the regular ribbon, which is fine once you

Hello! I hate to correct anyone on the list, but I have to say that just
because you are running Windows 8.1 does not mean you won't have to do a JAWS
repair. I installed Windows 10 last night, and upon turning on my computer

Not sure why this happened. Those of you who are upgrading from Windows 8.1
