Wanted to update everyone here and let you all know that we've finished work on
this feature and it will be available in 3.6.0, though some connectors that
manage offsets externally may require additional changes.

I've marked the initial KIP,

Yes, this indeed should be implemented as Kafka Connect REST API extension,
rather than a separate CLI tool (or at least additionally to it).

Otherwise, it would look really weird that usually REST API is used for Kafka
Connect management, but only connectors offsets are manipulated with some CLI
utility.

It would be really nice to have more high-level version of such tool that could
accept "time-based" shift for offsets, like, back 3600 seconds, or something
like.

I would say no. It should throw a bad request saying the connector is not
defined. Personally I think we need to have some better hygiene when it comes
to cleaning up offsets in general. It's confusing that if I delete my connector
and recreate it with the same name it starts at the old offsets. In general I
think I should be connect should be better about cleaning up offsets for both
the source and sink. I would want to be able to stop a connector, restart from
a specific offset, start the connector all through the API. If I delete a
connector I would expect all offsets to be removed.

[~jcustenborder], adding it to the REST API is a very interesting idea. Source
offsets are specific to the source connector, so wouldn't you need to read the
latest offset to get the structure and then use a new REST API resource to stop
the connector, set the offsets, and restart the connector? If the connector was
not defined, then should the offset reset method still work?

There is also another issue I dont know if it's related.

When I delete a connector and recreates it with the same name, the previously
stored offset is retrieved. I also have to resort to increment the name of the
connector.

That's unintuitive and I think not intended.

[~Satyajit], that would be great. However, the first step is to settle the

Talking about that Connect reads offsets when connectors starts, I noticed that
although *Connect REST API* exposes connectors' restart, pause, resume
functions, there is no *stop/start *functionality ( in order to force the
connector to read the offset ).
Does this mean that we have to stop the disttributed workers and start them
again for the connectros read their offsets ?
We have been using the delete/create connectors again to achive this, but we
are not happy about that design.

Note that the current KIP-199 proposal only works when the affected connectors
are *stopped*. I've clarified the KIP proposal to make this more clear. The
reason is not a limitation of the proposed tool, but rather because of how
Connect works by reading offsets only when connectors are started.

Yes it satisfy my requirements.
Right now in order to satisfy the reset requirement:

 1. I Pause the connector
 2. I use a producer to produce the "reset" message on the connect-offset topic
using a table key that sends it to the right partition.
 3. Delete the connector
 4. Create the connector again.

This is not optimal as all tasks reading from other tables also stop.
But I cannot not do better at the moment.

Only on create connector reads the external produced message.
*So it is crucial that the new tool makes the offset reset on the fly.*

This is an extremely usefull tool, as Kafka connect implementations usually
store a unique ID on a specif topic, and selected partition (based on a
calculated data key) , to check for new records.
If this ID is reset from the source, then no way to reset the offset of the
corresponding partition of that offset topic for this connector. One could
delete the offset partition and restart the workers, but that has implications
on certain type of source connectors.
The tool should have the ability to read a certain offset per topic partition
and print the value and the key of the data in that offset. The tool should
have the ability to write a new message in a specific topic/partition and use a
user specific value ( 0 to reset) as a value.

I wonder if it's better to handle any of the offset stores rather than only
handle offsets are stored in Kafka topics. The tool can read the worker
configuration file instead:

{code}
bin/kafka-connect-source-offset-reset.sh --config=my-worker-config.properties
--export --to-file=my-offsets.json
{code}

and

{code}
bin/kafka-connect-source-offset-reset.sh --config=my-worker-config.properties
--update --from-file=my-offsets.json
{code}

[~sliebau], have you made any progress on a KIP? Are you still interested in
working on this?

Sounds good to me. I'll investigate the issue a little and draft a high level
KIP as basis for further discussion.

This is definitely a good tool to have. There's a new Consumer Reset Tool in
Apache Kafka 0.11, but Kafka Connect source connector offsets are a different
beast. We'll need a KIP that explains the proposal for the new tool and how
it's used.

[~hachikuji] any updates on whether this is still needed? I can't self assign,
but am still willing to work on this.
