23RD FEBRUARY 2003 ST.POLYCARP BISHOP MARTYR, APOSTOLIC FATHER OF THE CHURCH (c75/82--155?) LIFE: St.Polycarp was converted and instructed by St.John the Evangelist; he must have been some 37 year old when the aged Apostleconsecrated him Bishop of Smyrna ( in Turkey) shortly before his banishment to Patmos.St .Polycarp proved himself a saintly and very able administrator in the face of povert and constant persecution by the jews. In 155, he was a man of 96, he undertook a journey to Rome to consult with Pope St.Anicetus about the vexing question of the easter date.This meeting didnt solve the controversy but the Pope permittedthe venerable Bishop to continue in his eastern tradition , which regarded the 14th day of the month of Nisan as the day on which our Lord arose from the dead. When he returned to his See, afierce persecution of Christians broke out.Upon the entreaties of the faithful he concealed himself on the outskirts of the city, but a slave revealed , under torture. Brought before the judgement seat of the proconsul, he was urged to swear by the genius of Caesar to curse Christ, but he calmly made this famous reply: Ninety-six years have I served Him, and never did he fail me! How could I now blasheme my king and Saviour? St.Polycarp was condemned to be burned alive. His hands were tied behind his back while he continued to praise the Blessed Trinity and to thank God for permitting him to drink of Christ`s chalice, great piles of fagots were piled up around him, particularly by the jews.The executioner awaitedwith awe the termination of his prayers and did not apply the torch until after the `Amen`. But the flame shot up around the venerable Martyr it was seen that he remained unscathed in thier midst. So he was dispatched with a spear. The genuine acts describing his martyrdom have come to us in the circular letter which the church of Smyrna sent out to all the brotherhoods of the holy and universal church to acquaint with the persecution.It is the earliest detailed record of a christian martyrdom which we possess; PATRONAGE: ear ache and dysenetry. REFLECTION: I bless u for judging me worthy of this day, this hour, so that in the company of the martyrs I may share the cup of Christ, your anointed one, and so rise again to eternal life in soul and body, immortal through the power of the Holy Spirit.May I be recieved among the martyars in your presence as a rich and pleasing sacrifice.` St.Polycarp. Dear all, I was out of net for a few weeks coz of some technical problems. This was the real time I realized what Joynet is? Since there isnt any prayer group where I stay, Joynet is my only fellowship in weekdays which I enjoy all the times. In those weeks where I was away from Joynet, Ive been deserted spiritually and every where I felt dryness. My prayer life have been disturbed totally and Ive switched to Cricket and other things. I couldnt concentrate in my personal prayer also. I even skipped from our weekly JY gatherings. But now, when I came back to Joynet, I got the real boost and the enthusiasm as before. I saw Jesus last week. He was wearing blue jeans and an old shirt. He was up at the church building; He was alone and working hard. For JUST A MINUTE he looked a little like one of our members. But it was Jesus, I could tell by his smile. I saw Jesus last Sunday. He was teaching a Bible class. He didn't talk real loud or use long words, But you could tell he believed what he said. For JUST A MINUTE, he looked like my Sunday School teacher. But it was Jesus, I could tell by his loving voice. I saw Jesus yesterday. He was at the hospital visiting a friend who was sick. They prayed together quietly. For JUST A MINUTE he looked like Brother Jones. But it was Jesus, I could tell by the tears in his eyes. I saw Jesus this morning. He was in my kitchen making my breakfast and fixing me a special lunch. For JUST A MINUTE he looked like my mom. But it was Jesus, I could feel the love from his heart. I see Jesus everywhere, Taking food to the sick, Welcoming others to his home, Being friendly to a newcomer And for JUST A MINUTE I think he's someone I know. STORY OF DREAMS Do not miss any line from this. Sometimes we get what we need and not what we want... Once there were three trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing their hopes and dreams when the first tree said, Someday, I hope to be a treasure chest. I could be filled with gold, silver and precious gems and be decorated with intricate carvings. Everyone would see my beauty. The second tree said, Someday, I will be a mighty ship. I will take kings and queens across the waters and sail to the corners of other world. Everyone will feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull. Finally, the third tree said, I want to grow to be the tallest and straightest tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill and look up to my branches, and think of the heavens and God and how close to them I am reaching. I will be the greatest tree of all time, and people will always remember me. After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group of woodsmen came upon the trees. One came to the first tree and said, This looks like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a carpenter, and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest. At the second tree, one of the other woodsman said,This looks like a strong tree. I should be able to sell it to the shipyard. The second tree was happy, because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship. When the woodsmen came upon the third tree, the tree was frightened, because it knew that, if it was cut down, its dreams would not come true. One of the woodsmen said,I don't need anything special from my tree,so I'll take this one, and he cut it down. When the first tree arrived at the carpenter's, he was made into a feed box for animals, placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all what he had prayed for. The second tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of being a mighty ship and carrying kings had come to an end. The third tree was cut into large pieces and left alone in the dark. Then years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then one day,a man and woman came to the barn. She gave birth, and they placed the baby in the hay in the feed box that was made from the first tree. The man wished that he could have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The tree could feel the importance of this event and knew that it had held the greatest treasure of all time. Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the second tree. One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the water, a great storm arose, and the tree didn't think it was strong enough to keep the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood and said Peace, and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried the King of Kings in its boat. Finally, someone came and got the third tree. It was carried through the streets, and the crowd mocked the man who was carrying it. Finally, the man was nailed to the tree and raised in the air to die at the top of a hill. When Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand at the top of the hill and be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus had been crucified on it. The moral of this story is that, when things don't seem to be going your way, always know that God has a plan for you. If you place your trust in Him, He will give you great gifts. Each of the trees got what they wanted, just not in the way they had imagined. We don't always know what God's plans are for us. We just know that His ways are not our ways, but His ways are always best. Tired of spam? However he was recalled to constantinople, by Julian the apostate who honoured him as his first physician and exempted him from the edict he published against christians.Caesarius resisted all th e efforts of the prince to make him adjure his faith,.Julian made himhis treasurerin Birthynia.While there he had anarrow escape from an earthquake in 368, which left such a lasting impression on his mind that he renounced the world and decided to end his long catechumenate and recieve baptism.He died soon after baptism. Dear Friends in Christ, I am not trying to hurt any one of you, but sharing what I heard from many of the catholic preachers. I am also adding some of my experience. I am 36, married for 8 years and having 2 kids. Praise the Lord! Loving before marriage is a sin. If not, what is marriage for Christians? Is it only a license for sexual intercourse? Love with heart before marriage and adds fleshly love after marriage? Is that 50-50 deal? Aby is lucky that his affair lead to marraige. What would you have done if your family objected? Either you avoid your family, OR you choose to betray your love!! Both are wrong. Right? That is the risk!!! What is the assurance that the one you like is going to be your partner? If NOT, then the one you loved is going to be the partner of another I.e., you have loved the wife/Hus of another one. A Sin! Don't confuse with friendship and love. You can choose your partner but dont fall in love. Do not even think in a way that he/she is going to be your partner. That is sin. Mathew 5:28 says even a gaze of lust is considered as adultery. As I mentioned in my last email, if you like a girl/boy, consult elders (or Church) and get married. Dont love thinking that he/she is my chosen partner. After marriage he/she is your hus/wife. Now you are not two, but one. How can you not love yourself? Thats is the point! As one flesh, in marriage, you are loving yourself. Anything outside is loving each other. Hi Joynetters, Shalom... When Jesus Talks about the Narrow -way.. he doesnt talk abt the narrow minded way.. Being in Love with somebody is not a trap or something wrong Manytimes it is gods way of lifting you up when u r down.. But when u stretch this lovely thing called love to its extremes... then u fall.. To avoid that god has given us a head and something in it also..and we are called to use it.. Not every one of us is samson and not every person we love is Delilah.. If we are so narrow minded about it.. it is an insult to our humanness.. Also we have to realise that very special line at the end of this samson delilah episode.. when samson destroys that hall..he kills many more of his enemies than he had killed in his entire lifetime.. So what we have here is a point to note.. God can write straight on crooked lines . Even though samson commited a big mistake.. god ensured that his purpose was still served and in a way not expected even by samson or the israelites.. So guys.. just ensure that ur beloved is not delilah who will sell u off.. ;-) and gals just ensure that ur beloved is not samson.. very strong in body.. but very weak in the mind and spirit.. ;-) Ask god for the gift of a person with the right balance.. Only then will your relationship work.. What God Unites Let No Man( Woman) Divide.. A point that came into my mind just now is this.. Have you noticed how the bible is not ashamed of showing the weaker side of its heroes... Be it david, Solomon, Samson..name them.. all of them are shown as humans and not as supermen.. Unlike our Hindi films where the hero is never wrong.. Have you ever asked why it is so? It is very clear . the guys who wrote these books.. didnt want us to concentrate on these human heroes, but more so on the god who uses these heroes inspite of all their faults to fulfill his purpose of salvation.. and is therefore the superhero of them all.. So then let us not come to a halt at samsons and delilah's.. But move beyond and see the god who is still in control .. For us personally ..the lesson is very clear.. We may do mistakes..as big as samson.. people may ditch us and turn against us like delilah.. in our daily lives.. But beyond that is a loving god who is in control and who knows what is best.. Let us trust him then.. with our samsons and with our delilahs..Life will be more wonderful and worth living then..
