[JOYnet] Surrender

2003-03-16 Thread sajeev alex
Dear Friends

James a young man blessed with a beautiful family, leading a nice life.
As the days pass he used to fall in ditches of sins of worldly pleasures,
as he falls every time his conscious used to say, Hello Dear, Why are you
hurting me? when the time of committing a sin it use to beat hardly but
sometimes still.. Fails. Later on repent for the same.

But this ups and down goes for a long time. One day, when he met his old
friend Biju, when they were passing their greeting, they saw a baby, He
said, how cute the baby is, James also said Yes, and we are also cute,
dont you think so, see, how the baby is trying to stand by his own, he
falls several times on the process, have you ever think, what the baby is
saying, when he falls, He says, Oh lord help me, Lord who see everything
sends some one or He will give him the power. In the eyes of our Lord we
are all babies. We all falls. What the difference between the baby and us
is the way we surrender to him, when we surrender wholeheartedly, He will
surely sent his angels to guard us from falling.

Yes, it is the right time to give our loving Lord thanks and praise, who
died for our sins and raise from the dead for us to reign our beautiful
world. It is the time to think what we have done to Him, what are our
drawbacks which makes us to fall, we can give Him wholeheartedly and ask
his mercy for the same.

With lots of love and prayers

Re: [JOYnet] Fruits...surplus ! .. How ?

2003-03-16 Thread Sijo Mooken
Dear Family,

I was listening to the father of a boy from a very rich family...the boy had
so much of toys and he wanted more and more. Parents admit that just for his
toys and other needs, they had to spent IRS 2,00,000+ during the last couple
of years and his latest demand is that he wants to have his hair dressed
like one of the pop singer and the parents do know what to do.

Hearing the story of this boy and about many others in this new generation
I was just appreciating how we all benefit as a joynet family or JY family.
Reading/hearing the experiences of many, there develops a thirst in us also
in the spiritual way and the desire for the Spiritual fruits, which is
contrary to the worldly desires like the boy in the above example.

Yesterday I was reading Prajomi's mail regarding praying the rosary even in
that noisy atmosphere... I was asking the question how about me? I travel
all alone and still do I concentrate on praying the rosary? Or do my
thoughts just wander?

Reading the sharing from Dr. Sindhu - needless to say how inspiring they
are - I was just checking with myself some points. Here I could see a child
of God with lots of spiritual wishes in her life. Among them were - the
greatest desire to see the Pope - Do I have this love and desire to see the
Pope? The answer somehow did not seem to be really inspiring..

Dear Dr. Sindhu, please share more from your walk in the Catholic life, from
which stage in this holy path, have you developed this great love and desire
to see the Pope. I do not know if you can put these into words or the
answer is any Catholic should have had this.. However as we believe our
faith increases by hearing..

Subject: [JOYnet] Fruits...surplus ! .. How ?

 Hello family,

We know fruits are produce of a tree/Plant.We get good fruits whent he
plant
is properly nourished.Like wise when we get filled by Holy Spirit ,all our
actions will bear holy spirit ...
Lo we 've the fruits of Holy Spirit.
But how to get filled? Its easy in this context..simply ask...remember
our
Big Brother saying ask and it shall be given to you.if you ask for
holy spirit ,how much more will my Father in heaven give you...?!!( cf
 ..Luke:11: 9 13)
I'll never forget what my spiritual father told me regarding how to ask
for
HS..he saidwhen you ask for Holy spirit do so
 REPEATEDLY,SHAMELESSLY,FEARLESSLY ,HOPEFULLY.

When i was in medical school i had little time to exercise (physical),but
i
had to do some since i was having disc problems..so what i did was a
Spirit
filling execrcise...Early in the morning i start doing some exercise..
when
ever i take a deep breath inside i will pray like thisHoly Spirit ,divine
spouse of my heart ,come and fill me with your Loveand i could feel Him
filling me .Then when i exhale i will pray Lord now i'm denouncing all
that's against your love in me...and i could feel it going away..!!!Then
i'll repeat the procedure asking next fruit Joy,then
patience,kindness..till faithfull ness. So ,you see, like wise i could
by heart all fruits of the HS ! .Another unexpected fruit of the task he
he
he .And also like wise i had no difficulty in counting too,i just need to
pray two rounds for HS fruits and its done !and at the end of this
spiritual
excercise i'll be perfectly fit to go on with my personel prayer and then
to
go out to trade this FRUITSAlleluia.

Isn't it exciting to do excercise with HOLY SPIRIT ?More over i enjoyed
jogging /strolling with Padre Pio and do combine study with St. Anthony
,praying rosary with Mother theresa and ...even cooking with Our
Lady.
Mind you Our Lady is an excellent cook.I can testify that..when i started
cooking i always had fear putting salt and chilli etc...and i was all
alone
in my quarters..no body to ask ..so i pasted a photo of Our Lady in my
kitchen and i used to consult her before putting all these..and yes,she
never went wrong. Oh...even after night duties we had nice time cooking
together and i still remeber how i could pray the 10 hailmary's correctly
while doing kitchen chores..i put straight 10 tins of salt , chilli etc
in
line so that even while cutting vegetables or doing other things i can
pray
correctly by looking at those and still keep the count..tin rosary...eh
Plus those things inside the tins could inspire many symbolic
prayers...like salt of the Earth etc...

I will share one more thing...i always had two dreams after becoming a
JY..one to meet the Pope and second to pray a rosary with Mother Theresa.
The first thing became reality first in WYD 1997 in Paris and many times
afterwards..but i could go to Calcutta only after Mother Theresa's
death. So when i was there praying in the chapel at her tomb.i asked her
.Mother why was that i could not come here before you died?.. i

St. Louise de Marillac
(d. 1660)

Louise, born near Meux, France, lost her mother when she was still a child, her
beloved father when she was but 15. Her desire to become a nun was discouraged by her
confessor, and a marriage was arranged. One son was born of this union. But she soon
found herself nursing her beloved husband through a long illness that finally led to
his death.
Louise was fortunate to have a wise and sympathetic counselor, St. Francis de Sales,
and then his friend, the Bishop of Belley, France. Both of these men were available to
her only periodically. But from an interior illumination she understood that she was
to undertake a great work under the guidance of another person she had not yet met.
This was the holy priest M. Vincent, later to be known as St. Vincent de Paul.
At first he was reluctant to be her confessor, busy as he was with his
Confraternities of Charity. Members were aristocratic ladies of charity who were
helping him nurse the poor and look after neglected children, a real need of the day.
But the ladies were busy with many of their own concerns and duties. His work needed
many more helpers, especially ones who were peasants themselves and therefore close to
the poor and could win their hearts. He also needed someone who could teach them and
organize them.
Only over a long period of time, as Vincent de Paul became more acquainted with
Louise, did he come to realize that she was the answer to his prayers. She was
intelligent, self-effacing and had physical strength and endurance that belied her
continuing feeble health. The missions he sent her on eventually led to four simple
young women joining her. Her rented home in Paris became the training center for those
accepted for the service of the sick and poor. Growth was rapid and soon there was
need of a so-called rule of life, which Louise herself, under the guidance of Vincent,
drew up for the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul (though he preferred
Daughters of Charity).
He had always been slow and prudent in his dealings with Louise and the new group. He
said that he had never had any idea of starting a new community, that it was God who
did everything. Your convent, he said, will be the house of the sick; your cell, a
hired room; your chapel, the parish church; your cloister, the streets of the city or
the wards of the hospital. Their dress was to be that of the peasant women. It was
not until years later that Vincent de Paul would finally permit four of the women to
take annual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. It was still more years before
the company would be formally approved by Rome and placed under the direction of
Vincent's own congregation of priests.
Many of the young women were illiterate and it was with reluctance that the new
community undertook the care of neglected children. Louise was busy helping wherever
needed despite her poor health. She traveled throughout France, establishing her
community members in hospitals, orphanages and other institutions. At her death on
March 15, 1660, the congregation had more than 40 houses in France. Six months later
St. Vincent de Paul followed her in death.
Louise de Marillac was canonized in 1934 and declared patroness of social workers in
1960.

Comment:
In Louises day, serving the needs of the poor was usually a luxury only fine ladies
could afford. Her mentor, St. Vincent de Paul, wisely realized that women of peasant
stock could reach poor people more effectively, and the Sisters of Charity were born
under her leadership. Today that Order continues to nurse the sick and aging and
provide refuge for orphans. Many of its members are social workers toiling under
Louises patronage. The rest of us must share her concern for the disadvantaged

REFLECTION:

Be diligent in serving the poor ...love the poor , honour
them,my children, as you would honour Christ himself(St.Louise)

[JOYnet] I Am Not Alone

2003-03-16 Thread sajeev alex
I Am Not Alone

An Old man sitting lonely, thinking and talking like a small child.
Suddenly his grandson came and asked him, to whom you are murmuring to.
He proudly said, I am not alone see I am talking to Our Father Our
Mother. Friends, it is the time for us to build a strong fellowship with
them by offering ourselves to Them. So try to murmur to Them and
intercede with our loving Mother.

[JOYnet] Value of relationships

2003-03-16 Thread Anand Sunny
Hi all,

I felt it is quite important to understand the relationships from various
angles.

As we keep on trying to become active followers of Jesus in all walks of life,
relationships plays important role.

If you have seriously thought about it... relationships are to be considered
at a much higher level.

It starts at:
- seeing a person for the first time
- meeting him/her
- introduce each other
- trying to learn each other
- evaluate each other
- NOW - the important question... Who is he/she to me?

This is an important deviation... that is taking place at that point of
interaction (knowingly or unknowingly)

Further,

- we either try to maintain that relationship (Unless considered or measured
in terms of benefit!)
- OR
- discard (Don't we?)

I am just going a bit deeper into this...

Have we ever sort the help of our Lord into this practice?
Nope! would be the first answer... except to a certain case such as chosing a
life partner!

I would suggest... by doing this for every person we meet (Obviously its not
going to me more than... say... 10 people a day in a normal scenario!)
we would be able to see and feel our Lord's love at a higher pace!

As a psycological approach, most of the sins are circled around ones'
relationship with others:
- the way we behave to others (hurt physically and mentally)
- define ones' relationship to the other
- etc etc

Some of us would find this subject quite helpful in achieving our goals as a
Christian. I may not have furnished all the necessary points at this moment,
however, my dear brothers and sisters could add in more aspects what our Lord
wants us to discuss and understand.

Praise God

My prayers for all

Sunny

[JOYnet] Thanks - Baby has arrived!

2003-03-16 Thread Thomas George
Dear Joynetters in Christ,

 HAIL JESUS KING!

The Lord has blessed us with a boy baby (2nd
child). My wife Leena gave birth on 13th March
(Thursday) at 1.00 p.m. The delivery was normal and
the weight of the baby 2.95 kg. Both Leena and the
baby are doing fine and in good health.

A special thank you to each and every one for
your prayers. May the Lord bless you abundantly!

Reg. Jessy, she was discharged from the hospital
alongwith the baby on 13th March. Both Jessy and the
baby are keeping fine and in good health. This is the
first time that the Lord has blessed Jessy to take the
baby home. Jessy's 1st 2nd babies who lived for 53
days 20 days respectively expired in the hospital
itself. Surely, this time the Lord worked wonders
mainly because so many people had prayed for Jessy
including from our Joynet group. Thanks to each one
of you.

 In HIS grip and grace,

[JOYnet] LENTEN MOUNTAIN]]]]]]]]]]

2003-03-16 Thread FR. THOMAS THARAYIL
Dear Friends,
How is Lent going with everybody?? Enjoying it ? Working hard on it ?
Hey, what is this 'Lenten Mountain'?? Have heard of Mount Sinai, Mount Calvary etc.,
but never heard of a 'mount Lent', right?? So what is it?
Today after the morning Mass I was ministering to the sick in the hospital and
as I came down to the chapel there was a person praying. On seeing me she asked if she
could go for confession and I gladly took her to the reconciliation room and as I was
hearing her confession this thought came to my mind, MOUNT OF LENT or LENTEN
MOUNTAIN. I shall try to make it clear as far as possible, since this is a new
insight that I too got.
Today being the second Sunday of Lent, I hope you all heard the gospel that was
read during the Mass; Mark 9:2-10 (about the transfiguration of Our Lord). I was
trying to relate this passage to our own life and particularly with the Lent. Then
comes this thought as a clarification.
What is Lent all about, if not a call and a possibility for 'transfiguration /
transformation'.?? In the gospel passage, we see the Lord going up to the 'mountain'
and being closer to the Father in prayer. There he gets a special glow of the glory of
God and He seems transfigured, and He radiated that glory]]
Through Lent we are also called to ascend 'a mountain' and come closer to
God. Thus the practices of Lent like our extra prayers, fasting, works of mercy etc.
form theLenten Mountain that we climb on the top of which Our Heavenly Father will
shine His glory on each and every one of us. Just as Jesus was closer to the Father,
let us also come closer to Him in this Lent and as we come out of it after the fourty
days, let others see the glory of God on us; in our words, deeds, relations, etc.
So keep climbing the Lenten Mountain and get transfigured]]]

[JOYnet] The Diwali Rocket

2003-03-16 Thread Mary Paul
My dear friends,
I would like to share a weird experience wherein God protected my friends
and me. I was in between my 7th semester Engineering exams. It was the day
of Diwali. The next day we had one University exam.My daily routine is to
get up by 6:00 in the morn and then go to the hostel Prayer room. Pray
for some time, go for breakfast and then back to room and start studying
at sharp 8:00 .I always study at my table next to the window. In the
mornings,I normally dont go to sit in the garden to study. Our hostel has
large area and next to the hostel compound walls there were big trees
with thick branches and foliage. My room was in third floor facing the
road. From the hostel building to the compound wall there is quite a lot
of area .The road was also average wide and on the roadside were a few
shops and one or two small houses. That day I got up as usual. But when I
was leaving for prayercell I had a feeling to carry all my study books
along with the Bible to the prayercell. As usual I went to prayercell
,then for breakfast to mess ,then I had a feeling to go to prayercell
again. I went and prayed there for sometime and instead of going to
room for studies I went outside to the garden to study.I never do go out
to study. But that day I did.I had also the books with me which I had
taken to the Prayer room along with the bible.By morning sharp 8:00am
,while i was studying in the garden,I heard a loud sound and something
shattering to pieces.I thought again one of these girls would have
dropped the plates or cups .Still I was wondering how it could be so
loud.Anyway i concentrated in my studies. After an hour or so i went
slowly climbing back the stairs. One of my friends shouted ,Didnt u
hear??' I asked what. She just kept quiet. When I came up there was a
small gathering near my room and everyone was staring inside.I couldnt
believe what Isaw.My table was fully covered with glass pieces , the
window had a huge hole in it and was blackish in colour. Some of the
glass in the window was melted and in a deformed shape. There was smoke in
the room.My books, shelves were all covered with glass pieces. Also I saw
remnants of a Rocket (the firecracker variety which goes to the sky to a
large height and bursts) lying in my room.It was stuck to the bottom of
the door. The sides of the door was burnt. What happened was that being
Diwali ,small kids who were living in the houses next to the road were
bursting crackers and rockets and one rocket instead of going up ,shot
across the road and the thick trees near the compound walls came within
the hostel compounds aimed to the third floor Room no:217 window where I
sit and study -:).It came ,hit on the window ,exploded and swished the
floor and got stuck under the closed door of our room. And it was sharp
8:00 that happened, the shattering sound which i heard, while i was
studying in the garden.Normally at this time I will be seated with my
books next to the window.Do u know what happened to my room mates. There
are four per room. Two of my roommates had gone outside. The third friend
had fallen asleep, while studying in her bed. When she heard this
shattering sound ,she was in such a deep sleep and got up thinking it was
a part of a bad dream.By Gods grace no glass pieces had fallen on
her.God saved all of us.If the rocket had landed in one of our beds and
mosquito nets it would have gone in flames.Had I been there ,rather than
dying of burns, I would have died of a cardiac arrest. Also if my room
mate had been awake she also would have got the same. I just thank God
for making me take my books and go to the garden to study instead of
sitting next to the window and also for protecting my roommates.I never
had the habit of going out and he made do that the same day. There was
lots of cleaning work to be done in our room and it grabbed our study
time. But still we were able to do the University exams the next day. It
was a weird incident and God protected us.

[JOYnet] Mission Mexico

2003-03-16 Thread Leena Philip
Hey everyone! How are you? I just wanted to share about my missions trip
to Mexico. Last week was my Spring Break and I went to Tijuana, Mexico with
a priest, a nun, a lay person, and 22 other catholic college students. It
was an AWESOME experience!
We left last Saturday (March 8) from BWI (Baltimore, Washington
International) to San Diego, where we then rented vans and drove done to
Mexico. It was a total shock when we entered Mexico. As we got closer to
the orphanage that we were staying at, I just felt so horrible and I was
thinking, what did I get myself into? The roads, (actually they weren't
even roads) were horrible. The ride was very bumpy! (It was like the roads
in India, but I think they were even worse). We got to the orphanage late
and just went to bed. The next morning we woke up and headed to the work
site. Our project was to help build a dental clinic. (The dentist who is
going to use the building is an Indian Hindu woman. She gives up her time
and money to come down from California to help the children of Mexico.) We
did a lot of painting and we also got to help with the roof. We put the
walls up and used putty to fix the holes and flatten the walls. We got to
go to a Spanish Mass on Sunday. The church was just being built. It had
the basic 4 walls and an altar and some chairs. It still needed a roof and
windows. What was amazing was how the church was so full. They didnt have
enough chairs and people were standing around. There were so many children.
In America we have space in church, put not enough people, but in Mexico,
we have the people, but no space in church. We also had morning and evening
prayer.
When our work was done for the day, we got to go back to the orphanage and
shower. Sometimes the water stopped on people mid way through their
showers. Sometimes people had to take very cold showers. But for some
reason, God blessed me with great showers =) (No problems what so ever.) We
all had dinner with the children. Mexicans eat similar foods like us
Indians, but they eat a lot of beans!
The children made me happy. I didnt think about school or any of my
worries. I looked at them and I realized that I am truly blessed. Some of
them have parents (their parents can not afford to raise them), who come to
visit them during the weekend and take them home during the weekend and then
bring them back. Some have siblings that also live at the orphanage. But
the majority of the kids are orphans. These kids have a special bond with
each other. They share and help each other.
We also got to visit another orphanage. It was run by the Augustian
Mission. This orphanage had little babies. There was one baby that was a
crack baby that was only a couple of weeks old. There was one boy who was
10 years old who has been with them since he was born who was basically
brain dead. He couldnt see or hear that well.
We got to visit Rosarito, Mexico for a day. They had this cool market place
and it was quit amusing. At the end of our trip we got to visit San Diego,
CA also. It is a beautiful city.
So now I am back safe and sound. Praise God! The one thing that I learned
from this trip was to have a greater appreciation for what I have. You
should really see some of the places where these people live. They are
lucky just to have 4 walls around them. I think the next time I complain
about my house, I will think twice. I am blessed with parents who are given
the ability to raise me. I am also blessed to have an education. Children
in Mexico can study for free until they are 12. The poverty in this country
is very sad. You might be thinking how can God do this to them. Yet he
made you and me to help people like this. You are given many talents. Use
them for the LORD! NEVER think twice about donating your MONEY and TIME for
GOD! God will ask you- When I was Hungry did you Feed Me? When I was
Thirsty did you give Me something to Drink? I truly saw Jesus in these
children. They didnt complain; they were content with what they had. Are
we all content with what the Lord gave us? Sorry I didnt mean to make this
sound like I was preaching.
If any of you are given the opportunity to help serve the poor, please do
it. We dont have to go to a different country. There are homeless
shelters, orphanages, Habitat for Humanity, etc. in the cities we all live
in. I think we all need to put our faith into practice. Start practicing
what you preach! We all have attended so many retreats; it is time that we
go through a different retreat of serving people. You will not regret it!

Sorry this was so long. Thanks for taking your time to read this. Please
pray for the children and for the people that serve them full time in the
orphanage I stayed in. Pray for all missionaries around the world.

May God bless all of you! You are all in my prayers!

Love and Prayers in Jesus, Mary and Joseph

[JOYnet] Re: Living Generosity

2003-03-16 Thread Bincy Abraham
Hi friends,

when i first read Sindhu's email about what the old granny had taught
her, i couldn't help but remember my grandmother (my mom's mom). she
passed away 7 years ago but not a day goes by that my family nor i don't
remember or speak about her... she was a wonderful, loving woman who had
a tremendously GENEROUS heart!!! she gave unconditionally all that she
had and she never looked at who she was giving to or what she was giving
but as long as there was a person who needed her help, she just gave
freely there was no limit or boundaries to her sharing-- she gave
whatever was asked of her--her time, talents, her love, her compassion,
her very self

my grandmother was very blessed not only to be able to raise her children
but she was involved in the lives of ALL of her grandchildren at some
point or another and we her grandchildren were blessed to be close to her
and to see her carry out her faith in her words and actions!!! i lived
with my grandma and grandpa and my mom's younger brother and sister for 3
years in Kerala. this was a very early period of my life and i was
between the ages of 3-6. even though i was young, many memories stick out
in mind of that time...

my mom's house in Ettumanoor is on top of a huge hill... we had just
enough to meet our daily needs but all of our neighbors were very poor
and struggling just for food, water and the bare necessities.. my
grandparents actually allowed our well to be the neighborhood well where
everyone could draw the water for all their needs and our pond was the
neighborhood hot spot for all bathing and washing and town news... my
grandparents also gave part of their land free to this one family who
basically had nothing and even gave them the means to build a small house
on our property and supported this family and their children till they
got married...but all these generous acts were initiated by my grandma. i
remember that the kitchen was her territory and as soon as the sun rose,
it was filled with all the ladies of the area (chadithee mara)..it was
where they shared their lives, their struggles, their hopes for their
families.. there was always someone there with my grandma till the sun
set.. she would teach them about Jesus and the Bible (she was not very
educated but she shared the little things she knew or heard at the homily
or from someone--kitchen evangelization), she would give them rosaries
and prayer books... all the ladies would help my grandma with the cooking
and she would give them the best part of the dishes to take to their
families and we ended up with the leftovers (now since i was her first
granddaughter and since i was left there by my parents, i always got my
share and so did my grandpa but my uncle and aunt were not so lucky and
were not so happy with her at times..sometimes b/c of how much my grandma
gave, she would go to bed on an empty stomach).. if someone needed money,
she just gave without thinking if she had any left for her family (it was
not like we were rich or anything but she knew that God would
provide)...one thing as a child that i remember is an incident in which i
was not happy with her...my mom had given my grandma a beautiful gold
necklace and i think this was the only jewelry she had and wore and i was
so happy to see it on her b/c my mom had given it to her...she ended up
giving it to someone so they could sell it and receive the money from the
sale and i was so upset with her.. i remember i cried why did you have
to give it away and she wiped my tears and said it is only a necklace..
it is a material thing only which will come and go.. but the gifts from
God are eternal and will last forever... God provides and gives freely
and we should do likewise... at that very young age, i did not
appreciate her words but now i value and cherish them in my heart

when my grandmother died--the whole town mourned--the number of people
who came to see the body and were at the funeral were beyond counting
capacity..the poor of the area were in majority.. she was the life of our
family and of the town... when we were grieving we were comforted by all
the neighbors who shared the many things that she had done for them.

one thing i would like to mention, looking back on her life--the secret
behind her unconditional generosity was her devotion to Mother Mary who
strengthened her spiritual, prayer life and made it fruitful...her
personal priorities included going to mass, saying rosary and daily night
family prayer which she initiated and she was very punctual and
consistent...my grandmother's daughters took some of her personal
belongings after she died(to somehow hold a little piece of her to
remember) and my mom got her most valued item--her rosary and that was
all my mom wanted!!! i feel like all of her children, grandchildren and
now great grandchildren are being blessed daily for her prayers and
loving works...i know she is a powerful person interceding for us from
HEAVEN

i can go on and on about my

17TH MARCH 2003

ST. PATRICK

BISHOP CONFESSOR..(C 385--461?)

LIFE:

Legends about Patrick abound; but truth is best served by our seeing two solid
qualities in him: He was humble and he was courageous. The determination to accept
suffering and success with equal indifference guided the life of Gods instrument for
winning most of Ireland for Christ.
Details of his life are uncertain. Current research places his dates of birth and
death a little later than earlier accounts. Patrick may have been born in Dunbarton,
Scotland, Cumberland, England, or in northern Wales. He called himself both a Roman
and a Briton. At 16, he and a large number of his fathers slaves and vassals were
captured by Irish raiders and sold as slaves in Ireland. Forced to work as a shepherd,
he suffered greatly from hunger and cold.
After six years, Patrick escaped, probably to France, and later returned to Britain at
the age of 22. His captivity had meant spiritual conversion. He may have studied at
Lerins, off the French coast; he spent years at Auxerre, France, and was consecrated
bishop at the age of 43. His great desire was to proclaim the Good News to the Irish.
In a dream vision it seemed all the children of Ireland from their mothers wombs
were stretching out their hands to him. He understood the vision to be a call to do
mission work in pagan Ireland. Despite opposition from those who felt his education
had been defective, he was sent to carry out the task. He went to the west and north,
where the faith had never been preached, obtained the protection of local kings and
made numerous converts.
Because of the islands pagan background, Patrick was emphatic in encouraging widows
to remain chaste and young women to consecrate their virginity to Christ. He ordained
many priests, divided the country into dioceses, held Church councils, founded several
monasteries and continually urged his people to greater holiness in Christ.
He suffered much opposition from pagan druids, and was criticized in both England and
Ireland for the way he conducted his mission.
In a relatively short time the island had experienced deeply the Christian spirit, and
was prepared to send out missionaries whose efforts were greatly responsible for
Christianizing Europe.
Patrick was a man of action, with little inclination toward learning. He had a
rocklike belief in his vocation, in the cause he had espoused.
One of the few certainly authentic writings is his Confessio, above all an act of
homage to God for having called Patrick, unworthy sinner, to the apostolate.
There is hope rather than irony in the fact that his burial place is said to be in
strife-torn Ulster, in County Down.

PATRONAGE:

engineers, excluded people, fear of snakes, diocese of Fort Worth, Texas, diocese of
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Ireland, archdiocese of New York, Nigeria, diocese of
Norwich, Connecticut, diocese of Portland, Maine, diocese of Sacramento, California,
snake bites

Comment:

What distinguishes Patrick is the durability of his efforts. When one considers the
state of Ireland when he began his mission work, the vast extent of his labors (all of
Ireland) and how the seeds he planted continued to grow and flourish, one can only
admire the kind of man Patrick must have been. The holiness of a person is known only
by the fruits of his or her work.

REFLECTION:

Christ shield me this day: Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ
in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every person who
thinks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me (from

[JOYnet] RE: weekend experience

2003-03-16 Thread Bincy Abraham
Hi friends, this weekend was truly an amazing spiritual experience for us
here in Chicago!!! i feel like it is wrong if i don't share it with you
all... Fri night we had stations of the cross followed by mass and from
9:30 PM till 2:30 AM we had our regular Night Vigil with exposed blessed
sacrament (we have it every second friday of the month)!!! it was
powerful beyond words... Jesus was really and truly PRESENT Sat
afternoons we have our (adult, youth/teenager, christeen) prayer meetings
(the bread and butter of JYC) from 4:30-6:30 PM going on
simultaneously. this last Sat it was a very special combined session b/c
we had Mr. Jim Murphy, US and World renown man of God (member of National
Charismatic team), speak to us about the Shroud of Turin and the Passion
of Jesus. Anyways, Mr. Murphy was sharing about the Passion of Jesus in
detail...I have always known that Jesus suffered much for us but till
this last Sat, i never realized the full physical extent of His
suffering. Mr. Murphy shared in detail how Jesus was inflicted with pain,
what instruments were used, the depth of the penetrating wound, the
duration of the torture, etc I really can't go in detail to his
sharing b/c i don't think i will do justice to the presentation (there
was so much covered in mere 2 hours)... One thing that I would like to
share is that Jim Murphy mentioned that Jesus died LITERALLY of a BROKEN
HEART... Jesus who had PURE, PERFECT LOVE died of a broken heart because
He loved us unconditionally... You must wonder what I am talking about,
if I make sense...I was pondering the very same thoughts when Mr. Murphy
was speaking.. This is how he explained it: After Jesus died on the
cross, in John's gospel it is mentioned in ch.19:34 one soldier thrust
his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out. An
eyewitness (John) has testified and his testimony is true. Have you ever
wondered why blood and water gushed forth? Jim Murphy explained some of
the investigated, researched findings in medical terms and from my
medical background, I was in total agreement and understanding. When
blood is taken and sits in a test tube for a while, the red blood cells
blood settle to the bottom and the serum component water stays on
top... it is believed that Jesus's heart was bleeding from the pressure
and torture of His physical afflication. If blood escapes from the heart
and small vessels into the pericardium (the membrane that covers the
heart) and since He was bleeding internally for a long time, the blood
had been sitting in the pericardium for a long time and had settled into
its parts, thus producing blood and water gushing forth...Physically
Jesus's heart was bleeding for us!!! Another point which struck my
attention from the presentation was the emphasis on the last few words of
Jesus. Many of us remember the words but don't realize just how painful
it was for Jesus to just even say one word.. On the Cross, it took every
inch of Jesus's being to utter even a sound... Father, forgive them,
they know not what they do...Amen, I say to you, today you will be with
me in Paradise... Woman, behold, your son.. Behold your mother.., I
thirst... My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? It is
finished... Father, into your hands I commend my spirit Now when I
hear these words, I hear them differently with new perspective and
meaning. Jesus did not have to say a single word on the cross but till
His last breath, He was trying to save us The height and depth of
Jesus's suffering is tremendous and it parallels to His unconditional and
perfect love for us... Jesus did not have to die on the cross or endure
any physical or emotional suffering.. He was the beloved Son of God with
whom His Father was well pleased. But Jesus knew that if He did not
undergo this suffering, we would not have this opportunity to be with His
Father alongside Him Jesus was fully God and fully human and He
experienced pain at the human level to the full extent--the extent which
through His sacrifice we were saved... The presentation was truly
powerful experience of Jesus and it has changed my life in someway or the
other.. I don't think I will ever truly understand the extent of how much
Jesus suffered physically for us... I hope to understand 1-10 % at
least... I just hope and pray that this Lenten period, you may all be
blessed with an understanding and reflection of the PASSION at a greater,
meaningful level and this experience will change your life in someway or
the other as it has for me.. Luv n Prayers, Bincy :=) CHICAGO

Hi friends,
That was a very beautiful sharing ..
It brought a point to my mind which i felt i should share with you..
The piercing of Jesus's side saw a flow of blood and water..
Water flows from the body only when there is no more blood left.
This signifies that Jesus shed all his blood for us..upto the last drop..
he gave himself for us totally..
Let us thank god today for the gift of the most precious blood of Jesus which washes
away all sins.

  PRESS STATEMENT

Dear Madam / Sir,

Re: Condemnation of the murderous assault on Rev. Fathers Dominic
Rozario / Paul D'silva of Rahata Parish, Ahmednagar at Shirdi Bus
Stand.

We condemn the murderous attack on both the Priests by fascist /
fundamentalists forces at Shirdi Bus Stand on March 12 at 8.30
p.m.

Both the Priests were on their pastoral visits to Shirdi and
Nimgaon respectively. At around 8.00 p.m. Rev. Fr. Paul was
waiting at the Shirdi Bus stand for the return of Fr. Dominic from
Nimgaon. A youth approached him and requested him to come aside
saying , Father I wanted to speak with you.
While the youth was speaking four more youngsters joined him and
tried their best to push the Rev. Fr. Paul in a waiting rickshaw.
Fr. Dominic tried to intervene at which point of time both were
assaulted mercilessly. When there was a public commotion the youth
disappeared.
Then the Priests got in touch with their Parish Priest Rev.
Gilbert who immediately contacted the Police Inspector at the
Rahata Police Station who in turn spoke to his counterpart at
Shirdi Police Station. about this.

The Priests were then taken to the Rahata Rural Hospital for the
medical tests. Around 5 / 6 youth have been arrested thus far.
However pressure is being exerted on the police authorities to
release them.

We have taken up this matter with Dr Abraham Mathai, Member State
Minorities Commission, Government of Maharashtra who is also
pursuing this case with the concerned Government and Police
authorities.

We strongly urge that the guilty are not released and punishment
meted to them. Also the police and the government authorities
investigate who were responsible for this shameful episode.

You are kindly requested to give due publicity to this news item

Re: [JOYnet] Re: Living Generosity

2003-03-16 Thread Tina Jose
Hi!

Bincy, I know just what your grandma was like, coz' my grandma was the same.
I have never seen her, but I got to know her through my mom. Mom always
tells me about her. So though I have never seen her, I know everything about
her. To me she is an intellectual.
She never owned more than a single sari. If someone gave her a new one, she
would immediately give the old one away to a poor woman. She taught my mom
and her siblings how to pray. Mom says she scolded them if they didn't pray
aloud and clear.
Mom told me that she lost her eyesight by reading. In those days, she could
only read by the light of the oil lamp. She passed on what she read to her
children. And guess what she read? The lives of saints.
Mom reminisces and tells me that under her mother's pillow (grandma), she
would always find a little money, a rosary and a prayer book.
I know my grandma had to endure a lot, much more than anyone her age,
especially since my grandpa was famous for his hot-temper. But grandma was
as patient as ever. She was known for her wisdom, understanding,
spirituality and kindness.
My mom has received some of these traits though she doesn't concede to the
fact and she's trying to pass them on to me. But I must tell you, I haven't
been very good at learning from her.
To all those wonderful grandmas and moms in the world - a big thank you for
making us what we are today.

point or another and we her grandchildren were blessed to be close to her
and to see her carry out her faith in her words and actions!!! i lived
with my grandma and grandpa and my mom's younger brother and sister for 3
years in Kerala. this was a very early period of my life and i was
between the ages of 3-6. even though i was young, many memories stick out
in mind of that time...

my mom's house in Ettumanoor is on top of a huge hill... we had just
enough to meet our daily needs but all of our neighbors were very poor
and struggling just for food, water and the bare necessities.. my
grandparents actually allowed our well to be the neighborhood well where
everyone could draw the water for all their needs and our pond was the
neighborhood hot spot for all bathing and washing and town news... my
grandparents also gave part of their land free to this one family who
basically had nothing and even gave them the means to build a small house
on our property and supported this family and their children till they
got married...but all these generous acts were initiated by my grandma. i
remember that the kitchen was her territory and as soon as the sun rose,
it was filled with all the ladies of the area (chadithee mara)..it was
where they shared their lives, their struggles, their hopes for their
families.. there was always someone there with my grandma till the sun
set.. she would teach them about Jesus and the Bible (she was not very
educated but she shared the little things she knew or heard at the homily
or from someone--kitchen evangelization), she would give them rosaries
and prayer books... all the ladies would help my grandma with the cooking
and she would give them the best part of the dishes to take to their
families and we ended up with the leftovers (now since i was her first
granddaughter and since i was left there by my parents, i always got my
share and so did my grandpa but my uncle and aunt were not so lucky and
were not so happy with her at times..sometimes b/c of how much my grandma
gave, she would go to bed on an empty stomach).. if someone needed money,
she just gave without thinking if she had any left for her family (it was
not like we were rich or anything but she knew that God would
provide)...one thing as a child that i remember is an incident in which i
was not happy with her...my mom had given my grandma a beautiful gold
necklace and i think this was the only jewelry she had and wore and i was
so happy to see it on her b/c my mom had given it to her...she ended up
giving it to someone so they could sell it and receive the money from the
sale and i was so
