If you want to play about with user agents, this plugin for FF does the trick

http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

It allows you to change the user agent as reported OS on the fly.

Stehphan - I'm not sure if it would work - but try out the Firebug
mini-debug server. It was designed for debugging the iPhone remotley,
you might be able to get the PSP to work.

Somewhat related, but even more off-topic: i got a Sony PSP yesterday.
The built-in web browser is fantastic when it comes to rendering CSS-
styled pages, and it claims to have JS support, but it the browser
hangs when i load any of my jQuery-powered pages. Not at all certain
why, and of course there's no browser debugging plugin for it (like
Firebug).

[jQuery] Re: jQuery for Dummies

2007-07-19 Thread Karl Swedberg

Hi Mitch,

While we don't get into the history of JavaScript/ECMAScript or
explain what a CSS class is, for example, I can assure you that the
book doesn't assume a whole lot of knowledge.

The first chapter deals with some really, really basic stuff, like:
- what jQuery does
- why jQuery works well
- how to download the jquery.js file
- how and where to include jquery.js and your custom script file in
the  of your HTML document

- how to add a class to an element on page load

You'll also see elementary tips like this:
"After the stylesheet is referenced, the JavaScript files are
included. It is important that the script tag for the jQuery library
be placed before the tag for our custom scripts; otherwise, the
jQuery framework will not be available when our code attempts to
reference it."

So, there may not be much "fluff," but we tried really hard to
explain even the simplest of concepts so that people making a shift
from design to development or from some other programming language to
JavaScript would feel comfortable.

Besides, from what I see on your web site, you are very far from
being a dummy.

If you have any questions along the way, I'd be happy to try to
answer them, as I'm sure would many others on this list.

Hi Mitchell,

Welcome to jQuery my man. Here's a great option for you. jQuery team

"Learning jQuery : Better Interaction Design and Web Development with
Simple JavaScript Techniques"

You can find it here: http://www.packtpub.com/jQuery/book/mid/

I would highly recommend you pick it up and in addition, jump over to

I hope this helps.

[jQuery] Re: passing arguments to javascript function with php

2007-07-19 Thread Karl Rudd

Instead of building a new system entirely use what you have already
use "progressive enhancement".

You have "delete" buttons, with specific names that correspond with
the news items. When they're clicked they submit to a specific URL.

What you can do is catch the click and do the submit via AJAX.

For instance:

 ...

 ...

 ...

$(function() {
$('input.delete').click( function() {
$.ajax({
type: this.form.method,
url: this.form.action,
data: this.name + "=" + this.value,
success: function( msg ) { /* called if succeeded */ }
});
return false;
})
});

This has the added advantage that should your site be viewed on a
browser without JavaScript enabled it will still work.

More info on $.ajax here:
 http://docs.jquery.com/Ajax#.24.ajax.28_properties_.29

You may also like to add an additional argument to the "data" string
(say "ajax=true") just so you know the request is coming via AJAX
rather than a "normal" button press. That way you know you don't need
to return the whole page, just confirmation about if the delete went
ok.

That's just a bare bones implementation, if you want something a bit
more advanced I suggest taking a look at Mike Alsup's Form Plugin:
http://www.malsup.com/jquery/form/

[jQuery] [OT] Massive List of User Agents

2007-07-19 Thread Rey Bango

I know that, on occasion, I've needed to filter my code for specific
user agents on both the client and server-side. One thing that I never
realized was the shear breadth of user-agents out in the wild.

In looking through Dzone.com, I came across a link to a site which has a
massive list of user-agents and I definitely bookmarked it because I
find that type of info invaluable:

http://www.user-agents.org/

I'm not associated with the site in anyway. I just thought that it would
be a good resource for your guys.

In case someone's not familiar with user-agents, they're typically used
to identify what client is hitting your website. Wikipedia gives a nice
explanation as:

"A user agent is the client application used with a particular network
protocol; the phrase is most commonly used in reference to those which
access the World Wide Web. Web user agents range from web browsers to
search engine crawlers ("spiders"), as well as mobile phones, screen
readers and braille browsers used by people with disabilities."

That's one idea. i was hoping to avoid swapping around the event
handlers, but it looks like i'm going to need to. Then again, i'm also
philosophically opposed to adding a fix for people who are too stupid
to learn to click properly. Aaarrrggg. Tough choice.

i've avoided that so far because i have to disable the element (which
only works on buttons and similar elements) and because it requires
modifying the text of the element, which i don't really want to do
(except with text that the client provides) because my code cannot
know how that will affect the layout of the element.

i agree that for the concrete use case of FF's add-on installation
(and similar cases), the countdown button is a great idea, but my
plugin is for the general case, and i'm not yet convinced that it's a
good solution for the general case.

Current Issue

I currently have a form that offers users a date picker to select

Does anyon know how I can take the array of "selectedDates" and update
the textfield with the multiple dates once they "close" the calendar
for that selected input ? If I had 3 dates selected ideally the input
values would seperate each entry with a " , " and an example could
look like "01/01/07, 01/02/07, 01/03/07".

[jQuery] Accordion Bump Bug

2007-07-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the example below and pretty much every accordion example I've seen
based on jQuery there is a slight issue with the bottom tab of the
accordion. This usually occurs, or is just more visible, when you
have more than 3 tabs in the accordion menu. Although you can see it
in everyone's accordion menu, I'm posting a link to my version because
it seems most obvious here.

http://www.robustness.org/dev/jquery/slider/slider-jquery.html
(it's a small bump on the 4th tab, when you click any of the tabs,
just moves down and up really quick)

I think the effect should be more like the apple page, sans mouseover.
If i have the first tab open and mouseover the second tab, the third
tab does not move at all. That's the effect i'm looking for. It looks
more solid.

http://www.apple.com/mac/

I have used JavaScript to set heights on the container and the tabs
themselves, and this stops the tabs from interfering with the rest of
the page, however the tabs themselves still make these jumps.

Anyone have any ideas? Should this be reported as a bug?

2007-07-19 Thread Anthony Leboeuf(Worcester Wide Web)
 Hello everyone, Im having a bit of trouble using blockui. I've added
the plugin here
http://pioneer.dlg360.com/order/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=2678

when you click "add to basket" it should ask you a question(instead it
asks the question for 2 seconds then submits). But for some reason its
forcing the submit instead of waiting for the answer as the blockui demo
shows. I just cant seem to fix it, anyone have any suggestions? here is
my code http://pastebin.mozilla.org/157254

Thanks any help is appreciated

How about the dimensions plugin to get the height of one and set the other?

If the the content is being fetched using AJAX and the return type is text
that you are using to plop in as the inner-html for the div, than you should
be able to parse through the text and push elements onto a stack when
opening tags are encountered. Pop when closing tags are encountered. Any
tags on the stack at the end of the input need closed.

[jQuery] Re: RjQuery Accordion menu

2007-07-19 Thread Mitchell Waite

You are correct, I prefer Adobe's approach. Actually I have seen more
accordions like Adobe's then Joern's accordian control but I would love to
find a way around using SPRY because as good as it is, it's not easy to
manipulate like jQuery is. The height of the div is set as a min-height
property but you can make it static.

And somehow they get it to always stick to the top and bottom when opening a
closing. Thanks again for helping out a really dummy.

I never touched CF, I am using jQuery with IIS and ASP.NET.

Actually, this is a common theme in many JavaScript-based accordians. I
think you're probably accustomed to seeing something like this:

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/products/index.html

or

http://demos.openrico.org/demos/accordion

In that scenario, it looks like they have a div with a fixed width and
height and the accordian included in it. I'm fairly positive that the
same effect can be done with Joern's accordian control. He's the
developer of the accordian plugin you mentioned and also a member of the
jQuery project team. I'll ask him about it and see if he can't help you out.

[jQuery] Re: jQuery for Dummies

2007-07-19 Thread Mitchell Waite

Thanks to everyone for recommending the book, I ordered it right away.

However, I get the impression from this comment in the five minute review
this is not a "for Dummies" book

" Glancing at the Table of Contents - I'm happy to note there are no basic
introductory 'HTML/Javascript' chapters (no fluff!) you dive right into a
simple jQuery script where you manipulate some CSS."

I was hoping there would be a basic intro to the things most people familiar
with JavaScript take for granted.

So

" Initially you start at the basics - jQuery syntax, selectors, events and
using effects."

I would like to see several pages of different ways to activate a jQuery, as
I have seen at least a dozen,. For example as dumb as this sounds it took me
a while to figure out you can call anything in jQuery, using a
onclick="foo()". But I have not been able to get several jQuery functions to
work this way either.

I am not familiar with all the events like "attaching" and "focus" and
things like "chaining" are new to me.

Again, I'm talking a real dummy here :) Though I am proud of what I have
been able to do:

http://www.whatbird.com/wwwroot/NEW_TAB_SEARCH.html

Check the effects on the Text and Small Icon views and click the
Sorting->First, Last to see it puff.

The big challenge in this simulation was getting the effects to wait a fixed
time before firing, so as to simulate a real trip to the server.

The flash code sets the attributes of the object/embed tag for the

style attributes.

so the key is that it IS settign the value properly but it just takes a
minute for the post to complete.

so the next question is, how do i prevent the rest of the function from
running until the post is finished?

[jQuery] Re: changing the value of a global variable inside an post callback function?

2007-07-19 Thread bdee1

ok so i have posted my code below. it is a basic function that takes the
form as an argument. then it does a post to check if the email already
exists in the database. then hits a callback function that sets the value
of the global var dupsfound to either true or false. then after the post it
returns true or false depending on the value of dupsfound.

problem is that when it gets to the alert(dupsfound) line, the alert spits
out the default value of dupsfound. so it does not seem to be setting the
value of dupsfound.

var dupsfound="none";
function checkEmailDups(myemail)
{
$.post("checkemail.cfm", { email: myemail }, function(data){
  if ($.trim(data) == "available")
  {
dupsfound=false;
  }
  else if ($.trim(data) == "taken")
  {
dupsfound=true;
  }
});
alert(dupsfound);
return false;
if (dupsfound == true)
{
return true;
}
else if (dupsfound == false)
{
return false;
}

}

[jQuery] Safari not resizing this object...

2007-07-19 Thread Andy Matthews
Hey guys...on this page:

 &pagetype=35&featureid=-1

when the Flash movie finally loads, it executes a command to the browser to
change the height of it's parent container. This works fine in every browser
except for Safari. As I don't have access to Safari here, can someone take a
look and tell me what might be causing this issue?

This should help get you started. At some point, Ill make a better demo for

What if you just do this instead?

jQuery.easing.bounceout = function(x, t, b, c, d) {
  if ((t/=d) < (1/2.75)) {
  return c*(7.5625*t*t) + b;
  } else if (t < (2/2.75)) {
  return c*(7.5625*(t-=(1.5/2.75))*t + .75) + b;
  } else if (t < (2.5/2.75)) {
  return c*(7.5625*(t-=(2.25/2.75))*t + .9375) + b;
  } else {
  return c*(7.5625*(t-=(2.625/2.75))*t +
.984375) + b;
  }
  };

With the technique you were using, you were also removing the default
easing functions - probably causing errors for you.

I was wrong. You just need to change your metadata to use params instead of
attrs.  So instead of this:

attrs:{quality:'high',align:'middle',bgcolor:'#00',menu:false}}

use this:

params:{quality:'high',align:'middle',bgcolor:'#00',menu:false}}

[jQuery] Re: Image change on link hover.

An alternative avoiding 1 tag being two different images is the
following:

.hidden {display:none}

$(".showPic").hover(function() {
   $("#imgLinkAct1, #imgLinkAct2").toggleClass("hidden");
});

It's slightly more semantically correct, and means you don't need to use the
non-standard attribute.

I have a crude demo working when I hover over a link an image above is
switched out.

How do I best store what image I want the link to swap to?

$(".showPic").hover(function() {
$("#imgLinkAct").attr("src", "images/valve_manifold.jpg");
});

The html:

Linear Actuators Guided Actuators Grippers &

Would I store the img path in the tags title attribute?

I would like to not hard code it in the jquery/script..

I have a crude demo working when I hover over a link an image above is

How do I best store what image I want the link to swap to?

$(".showPic").hover(function() {

The html:

Would I store the img path in the tags title attribute?

I would like to not hard code it in the jquery/script..

Hi Chris,

Using .show() and .hide() with a speed will animate the height,
width, and opacity of the element.

You'll probably have better/smoother results if you use .slideDown()
and .slideUp() . Let us know how that works for you.

Not sure which MOD you're using (there are several) but if your using the
one I wrote (located at Pengoworks.com) then there is no way to disable the
behavior in the current code base.

Some possible workarounds:

1) MOD the code to add this feature.

2) Move to the latest more official version at
http://dev.jquery.com/browser/trunk/plugins/autocomplete. This doesn't have
a disable feature yet, but you could use the setOptions() method and set the
minChars to a really high number (like 99.) This code is heavily
refactored so you would need to re-write your current code.

3) Use the jQuery .remove() method to complete remove the input and replace
it with a new field.

4) Use 2 input elements in your form--one that has the autocomplete behavior
attached and one that does not. You can then hide/show the appropriate
fields. They should each have unique IDs, but the could have the same name.
As long as the hidden field's value is blank, you'll get the value from the
visible element.

This is the code I'm using (from the easin plugin):

jQuery.extend({
easing: {
bounceout: function(x, t, b, c, d) {
if ((t/=d) < (1/2.75)) {
return c*(7.5625*t*t) + b;
} else if (t < (2/2.75)) {
return c*(7.5625*(t-=(1.5/2.75))*t + .75) + b;
} else if (t < (2.5/2.75)) {
return c*(7.5625*(t-=(2.25/2.75))*t + .9375) +
b;
} else {
return c*(7.5625*(t-=(2.625/2.75))*t + .984375)
+ b;
}
}

}
});

[jQuery] jQuery Tabs in IE and Firefox Issues

2007-07-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm having an issue with my site:
http://www.rose-hulman.edu/~bryantms/prizes.html
(temporary host)

As you can see, the Tabs aren't aligning properly in IE and there is a
gap in Firefox. In IE, the content appears to the right of the Tabs.
In Firefox, there is a large gap underneath that I would like to
eliminate.

I'm still pretty new to programming and am looking for some
information to make it appear how it should (http://stilbuero.de/
jquery/tabs/). I think it may be CSS related, but again, I don't
know. Has anyone else run into similar problems?

For reference, the only comments in the markup are JQUERY EXAMPLE and
JQUERY INFO as to eliminate searching.

Any help you could provide is appreciated.

Speaking of tools, I highly recommend the Firebug extension for
Firefox,
truly essential for web development.

You could easily log your object into the console, like

console.log(obj);

I indeed do use Firebug. I see how it can inspect properties; but how
do I use it to show methods?

Hi Robert,

simply type in the name of the object in the console and hit Enter (or
CTRL-Enter):

var mySuperObj = {
 'superInt' : 42,
 'superFunc' : function() {
   alert('superfunc!');
 },
 'superObj': {
   'otherFunc' : function() {
 alert('otherfunc');
   }
 }
};

Firebug Console:
mySuperObj [ENTER]

now you can navigate through the object, including the functions...

Hi,

I have a table where some of the rows have a single cell spanning the

These rows need to be hidden on page load which is easy enough with
"display:none", but doing a .show() on them after that breaks the
layout in Firefox 2.0: it seems to ignore the colspan attribute, as
the whole sub-table appears crammed into the first cell.

Works in IE as expected. Also works in Fx if I remove the CSS and do a
$.hide() on the rows after page load instead.
I'm assuming this is a Firefox rendering bug, so apologies for the
slightly OT - can anyone yield any further info on it?

Speaking of tools, I highly recommend the Firebug extension for Firefox,
truly essential for web development.

You could easily log your object into the console, like

console.log(obj);

I indeed do use Firebug. I see how it can inspect properties; but how do

I use it to show methods?

You could easily log your object into the console, like

console.log(obj);

and inspect it from there by clicking on it, but you can also use
Inspect > DOM to have an overview of all objects.

And many many more useful things... I couldn't live (work) without it.

[jQuery] Re: using tabIndex

Brian Cherne wrote:

Hi Phil,

#elem1 must already have tabindex set

$(e).attr('tabindex') returns a string, so you should multiply it by 1
to convert it to a number, otherwise #elem2 will end up with a tabindex

$("#elem2").attr("tabindex", $("#elem1").attr("tabindex")*1+1);

Cheers,
Brian.

Just had the idea to not having to rely on #elem1 having the tabindex
attribute and fallback instead:

$("#elem2").attr("tabindex", (parseInt($("#elem1").attr("tabindex")) ||
0) + 1);

[jQuery] Rows hidden by CSS then shown after page load ignore colspan attribute

2007-07-19 Thread Rob Desbois

Hi,

I have a table where some of the rows have a single cell spanning the whole
table, containing a sub-table with different data.
These rows need to be hidden on page load which is easy enough with
"display:none", but doing a .show() on them after that breaks the layout in
Firefox 2.0: it seems to ignore the colspan attribute, as the whole
sub-table appears crammed into the first cell.

Works in IE as expected. Also works in Fx if I remove the CSS and do a
$.hide() on the rows after page load instead.
I'm assuming this is a Firefox rendering bug, so apologies for the slightly
OT - can anyone yield any further info on it?

Thanks,

[jQuery] Re: AJAX download progress

2007-07-19 Thread Gordon

It would seem that what I want to do is simply not possible in IE,
because readyState 3 (interactive mode) is not fully interactive in
Explorer's implementation of XHR. The other browsers will expose
partial data but IE won't. In fact it throws an exception if you do
attempt to access responseText while in interactive mode.

It would seem that the only solution is to test for browser.msie and
only run the download progress code if the browser is anything other
than MSIE. If it is then simply provide a basic loading message
instead.

Hello jQ folks,

(pardon me, but I just got braindead right when I'm trying to wrap-up the
final leg of a very long day.)

I just wanted to highlight the contents of an input field (read-only) on a
.click() event. Similar to when your click the url or embed fields in
YouTube to highlight the field contents.

I appreciate a brain jump-start from anyone, anywhere.

Mucho thanks!

Michael

[jQuery] Re: Listing methods of an object

2007-07-19 Thread Rob Desbois

Sorry, and the source code for the function can be obtained with
alert(j[x]).
In this code (and that below) 'j' is the javascript object.

Take a look to this article :

Sorry it's in French but i think the code lines are talking by
themselves. :)
